Hi all, I'm extremely new to this stuff and looking to get into it for fun. I am very much not a people person, I do not intend on going to cons or showing off any of this, I just want to make accurate costumes to have fun with at home or at smaller friendly gatherings. I think it would be fun to look in the mirror and see someone other than myself from time to time.

I'm almost completely unfamiliar with the skills needed to do this-- I have no experience with prosthetics, tailoring, plush-making, etc. All of the resources online seem to be very focused on the social side of things, either emphasizing buying certain pre-made cosplays to get attention or not elaborating on the specifics of making costumes in favor of pointing out which cons are the biggest and best to go to. I do not care about this shit and would much prefer detailed tutorials on specific fabrics, replicating certain fictional armors, etc.

I've checked the pinned post before making this thread, but it doesn't seem to be very helpful for cosplay specifically. The main site it links for help, cosplaytutorial.com, has not been updated in 6 years. A lot of its links are dead. The other site in the pinned post, cosplay.com, just seems to be an extremely simple feed of various peoples' cosplays without any place for discussion or tutorial. I am desperately trying to avoid using Reddit or Twitter as guides. There also seems to be an extremely weird amount of drama that I cannot avoid when trying to find simple things like the right type of fabric for tights.

Hence: this thread. Help pls. I do not know how to start and cannot find the resources to do so without all the focus being on cons. The rest of the internet seems to think I'm more interested in getting pictures of myself taken as opposed to dressing up as a character I really like, it is not helping me at all.

(Pic is semi-unrelated. I just chose Kitty because I don't want to post a picture of myself here, but she's who I plan on dressing up as first (just because it'd be incredibly easy to do). I look very similar to her, and her Shadowcat costume doesn't seem too hard to replicate, so why not.)
