Is anyone else going to Miku Expo Detroit?

bad news lads im afraid NT is way easier to work with than V6

My first encounter with vocaloid was a japanese video of tuning Miku and for some reason I completely ignored the voice sounding robotic just saw she has midi + lyrics on a piano roll and concluded she's probably a mascot for some sort of karaoke software (like those games that read your pitch and give you points if you get it right) cause I was just too confused by the concept of vocal synthesis that doesn't sound like dogshit to consider it an option

It is so crazy to sort of realize that it's been ten years since the 2016 expo. The energy was crazy back then. Does anyone else remember the after show orgy stories? I didn't even realize Miku Expo was going on again. Last time I checked after attending 2016 and 2018 was around 2020 and after that show was cancelled due to the pandemic and the digital show that happened in the years after I sort of thought it was dead. Also tickets seem to be extremely expensive compared to back then. Maybe I'm just old now, it was all so much fun...

it can be very expressive but sounds different to other vbs, i think NT2 at the very least is a good voicebank
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A5XNs0OWhE
i think most people hating don't even make covers, they just didn't like the sound + associate it with proseka which has bad tuning

Hmm... Yeah, I can definitely see that sadly enough. Honestly I think a lot of us aged out of it somewhat by now, or more or less just observe silently from the outside. Plus, I think some of it too was that 2014, 2016 and 2018 weren't as saturated with people who weren't as into the Vocaloid scene. I have a feeling that attending back then, you had to have an elevated interest level in it. I could be wrong but I could imagine it now being the strongest holdouts from the early days becoming jaded at the new wave of fans and the people who are attending out of a novel curiosity, or surface level interest. This isn't to say either that only certain people can go, no casuals, etc but I just think it is a natural effect of things like this over time. Those early days and those expo threads back then were insane though, very fun times.

I couldn't make it to the 2014 shows, but I started going to these in 2016. I was simply awestruck seeing her live that first time. It was a different vibe back then but I liked it. I remember people here bitching about the Anamanaguchi song back then, whereas people seem to love it now. I'm going to the DC show next month, but admittedly it doesn't feel as magical since they replaced the screen projection with a monitor. Between that and the rising prices, and that I'm getting older, this might be the last Expo I attend.
>>50874846
That was probably the best poster of the NA 2016 tour. I went to the NY show and that one was just hideous looking. I ended up buying one of the Mexican tour posters instead.

Yeah it really was pretty magical. In my opinion the events back then were really three distinct events all a part of the same Expo. The line was its own thing I'd argue. The event itself and then wherever else everyone would be congregating afterwards and have crazy stories like this to take home. I'm glad you're getting to go. I was surprised to see the cost of tickets for this year as well. Everyone don't forget, the confetti at the end is the rarest merch, be sure to grab some.

I kinda wish I could bring my Volks miku along to the show (which is less than two weeks away!!) but I won't have anywhere nearby to store her during the show, and I am sure her carrying case is well past the acceptable bag size for the venue. Not that I'd want to be carrying her in the crowd. Vinyl dolls aren't too delicate, but there is no reason to risk anything.
>>50874846
>I think a lot of us aged out of it
That's the sad truth of a lot of this, I think. Personally, I still love vocaloid as much now as I did 5 and 10 years ago, but there is a bit of "I'm one of the older guys now." I'm just shy of 30, so I am hardly one of oldest guys there, but there is a bit of a weird feeling being surrounded by people a decade younger than you. I am glad to see the scene as popular as it is now, but I still wish that it was filled with people more similar to me, you know? I will say, at least, that the other people who are in the VIP line are going to be a lot closer to the fans that I get along with, so that is a good filter. An expensive one for sure, but it does do a good job.
>>50875317
2018 was my first, and I have fond memories of massively underestimating the line to get in, as well as my friend and I trying to find a place that sold glowsticks since we didn't have penlights. During the show, we each had our pockets filled with lit glowsticks, and we'd have to dig through them to find the right colour when someone new came on. Thinking back, it was very cute.
I'm mixed about the screen, though. The projection was pretty unique, so it is a shame to see it go, but the screen kinda works fine. When you're close enough, you don't really notice the edges, and it wasn't something I thought about too much during last expo. I've been thinking that this will be my last one too for similar reasons as you, but I also thought that last year, and here I am again.
>>
>>
>>50876921
>I'm one of the older guys now
I wouldn't let that deter you dude, I only got into vocaloid just before I turned 30 a year and some months ago, and I've never felt self-conscious about it. Granted, I work as a tutor at a junior college, so I'm used to being around a bunch of late teens and early twenties-somethings, but still. Miku bridges all divides, age included.

>>50878478
See my other post digging up stuff from way back then >>50875621. Maybe its just me but I feel like the early Expo days were just literally off the wall wild. Sometimes I think trying to explain it does a disservice to the actual memory. Like, getting to whatever city you and your friends would be going to, buying a bunch of alcohol either before hand or once you got there, going to the show and then just whatever spontaneous event you could find immediately after and seeing everyone dispersed throughout the city hopping around to different bars. I personally never attended the fabled "after show orgy", I do remember seeing accounts of them happening here years ago though, I wish I saved some of those screenshots. Maybe I have some somewhere.. I could believe it honestly considering what would happen after the shows whenever I went to Dallas for 2016 and 2018. From what I can tell now the afterparties are a bit more curated and "official", seems to serve as a central congregation point.
>>50876921
>"I'm one of the older guys now."
Yeah I understand that... I'm halfway to 40 now so I was already sorta pushing it back then. haha.

I still remember hearing "Into Starlight" and "See the Lights" for the first time, I loved those videos. I'm sure I still have an old IA shirt buried somewhere around here. I wore that shirt for 2016, ended up wearing a Touhou one for 2018
>>
File: see_the_lights.webm (1.4 MB)

i think see the lights is one of the oldest vocaloid videos, or one of the only i can think of, where they kinda clearly used some experimental mocapping
like you can almost tell it's the bodysuit covered in tennis balls thing going on here so it's a bit uncanny but it's still charming

>Miku bridges all divides, age included
That's the thing, it isn't so much that I'm self conscious about it than I am aware of the difference. One time I remember was when I was waiting in line for the Kikuo shows in the US a year or two ago, and I was the shooting the shit with the people next to me in line. I had mentioned that I had stopped at some bars on my way here, and they said something that made me realize "ah, they can't drink because they're in high school." I could tell they were younger than me, but it wasn't something I really thought about until that came up. It is more little bits like that than anything else.
>>50878492
>buying a bunch of alcohol either before hand or once you got there
That's going to be my plan this time. Slap a case of something into a backpack and daydrink with whoever wants to join while waiting in line. It might not be necessary, since my show is on a weekday, but I'm planning on getting in line early, so I'll have a lot of time to kill.
>>

At least 4 hours before doors will get you in the middle of the venue if its standing, If you have assigned seating then technically it shouldn't matter. The line is part of the event though, and the time will fly by believe it or not. I would just suggest to get there early, otherwise you will be at the very end of a very very long line and potentially in the very back of the venue.
>>50878667
Yeah, that was one of my first exposures to "Vocaloid". I know IA isn't a Vocaloid, but still. I guess for me it was the general introduction to that subject more or less around that time. I remember listening to a lot of stuff on DMM as well before it got permanently rangebanned.
>>50880055
>Slap a case of something into a backpack and daydrink with whoever wants to join while waiting in line
Be sure you know your venues bag policy, or bring something that you wouldn't mind just disposing of, or better yet, something you can fold up and put into your pocket.

>If you have assigned seating then technically it shouldn't matter
I know our section and row are assigned at least, not sure about our seats. Thr tickets were a grad present from my girlfriend, but I keep forgetting to bug her to check. Probably gonna get there early regardless.

Yeah, the plan was to carry everything in a dump bag that I could get rid of as I head in. I've got a handful of those shitty drawstring bags as promos over the years, so it would be an excuse to use and get rid of one of those.

>>50880312
Yeah you should be fine then. Make sure oyu dont wait to the last minute to go to the bathroom if needed tthough. I remember some chick screaming at the top of her lungs at the end of 2018 Dallas saying she needed to be. I wonder if she ever made it. Hopefully so.

wwwwwwwww poor girl. This venue is alright, because there are plenty of restrooms you can dip out to while waiting so long as you have someone holding your spot in line. It is one of the better places to spend an afternoon waiting in line, I think. And, even if I didn't wait, miku magic would keep me safe until I can make it to a restroom, mhm

I'm going to Miku Expo LA today and it says doors open at 7:00 PM. What's the recommended time I should.be there? 6:00 PM? This is my first concert ever :D
>>
>>50890486
I went to the one in Chicago a few weeks ago and it was my first one too. I had VIP and our seats were assigned, so I didn't have to worry about getting there too late, but your experience my vary. Some people always get there hours before they open the doors for merch sales, some were already there at like 8 AM when I swung by. If you want to buy anything, I'd say get there as soon as you can.
>>
>>50890486
That should be fine
I got to yesterday’s show at about 6:40 and got in at 7:55 and had enough time to use the bathroom and get to my seat before the show started. If you care about merch at all then you’d want to show up a lot sooner than that. There’s gonna be multiple lines to get in so don’t be shy if you see a shorter line, just hop to it.
>>
>>50890739
I made the mistake of preordering merch and it's not getting here anytime soon. They're still processing my order; they haven't even shipped it yet. I can't spend another $60 on a penlight. I'll just have to go without.
>>
>>50890784
I'm not going to tell you not to buy two official penlights if that is what you want to do, but you can just buy a generic one to use at the show instead if you don't want to spend money on another. I feel you on waiting for stuff to get shipped, though. I bought some of the Apari stuff (I've liked them for a long time) and I'm yet to have those ship either. Bit of a shame, but what can you do

The thing is I can call myself whatever the fuck from Miku, Luka or Rin or whoever but if all I make doesn't even relate to them then it doesn't matter at the end of the day. It's just a name. I can name my cat Miku that doesn't mean she can sing tomorrow.

Sorry for the blog in advance. Please feel free to hide this post.
Just got home from Miku Expo 2026 LA Day 2. It was such a blast. It was my first concert ever. I was supposed to go to the 2020 concert but it was cancelled due to coof so I never went. I was wearing the 2020 shirt if you were there, there was only one other guy wearing that shirt that I saw.
I'm >>50890486 >>50890784 and thankfully my cheap Amazon penlight I ordered Friday night got here right before I left, so I was able to enjoy the experience with a penlight. It would have been so fucking sad if I didn't have one.
It took me a bit to get into it at first. I wasn't feeling the songs or the venue, but then they started picking up the slack and playing good songs, they even played Magical Cure Love Shot which was insanely fun. Kaito's fuckass song was a low point, but everything else was decent to great. By the end I was yelling and jumping and just overall having fun. I'm so glad I got to go.
Sadly, as soon as the show was over, I went home like a good boy. I didn't get to participate in any Miku orgies this year. If I could change one thing, I would love to have a friend I could go with so we could geek out about Vocaloid. I don't have any friends...
I love Miku and Rin so much!

I was jumping up as high as I could during the cheers in sweet magic, rofl. i never really learned any of the wotagei properly cuz i didnt want to spoil the show but the people around me were pretty easy to follow
i think the crowd and who you're near can really make or break the show if you aren't super into the setlist, but honestly i think tonight's was the best out of the 3.

That's awesome, I have been wondering how peoples impressions of this years expo are. I remember buying a Kingblade to bring years ago and then found out that I couldn't bring it, rather it wasn't recommended to be brought in due to interfering with the projection. I also remember someone who brought in some giant sign and was holding it up before the show started and was reprimanded by the crowd behind him.

I’ve avoided being spoiled by what the set list for MikuExpo is this year in hopes of going to the show in Georgia unspoiled with a friend cause we don’t have tickets yet but have been eyeing them, but as the date draws near I don’t know about paying over half a grand even if it’s for a really good seat, wish I bought sooner but since they’re still available I don’t know if I should bite the bullet and go anyways with the late buyers fee

I held the line for the LA show when they were charging like 500 dollars on average(some went up to like 1000 or something) for ground level tickets until the week of where I paid like 120 for it. It's a risky game obviously, but once I saw a good seat at a price I was comfortable paying I immediately pulled the trigger on it. You could also look on other resale sites outside of just the main ticketmaster one in case someone is selling a seat for cheaper.

their discord server seems to be just a circlejerk, although requests keep coming, nothing is added or acknowledged. at the very least their recommendations server is very active and worth keeping an eye on. you are probably more likely to find new vocaloid stuff on doujinstyle. if you are willing to crowdfund things along with other people 雨傘 (aka umfactor) is worth getting into. I don't know how you are supposed to tho since they went full nuclear with barriers of ingress since the last mass DMCAs

Dallas Miku Expo was enjoyable, but it definitely reinforced my dislike of the western vocaloid fanbase. Lots of obese women in cosplay, trannies and genderqueers, and I got a spot in the pit next to a drunken spic who kept trying to elbow me in the face.
The musicians looked like they were having a lot of fun which is always good and they played well.
Overall I had a nicer time at home streaming the Deco/PinoP/PokeMiku concerts.

I'm like Matthew McConaughey "i get older they stay the same age" type shit. I want to be excited and have fun and interact with other people but I'm a solid 10 years older than most everyone around me. Half these attendees weren't even walking yet when Supercell came out meanwhile I had it on CD.
Also like I'm not saying younger people can't exist or that I'm better because I'm old I just feel displaced.

reminds me of a zoomzoom seriously asking in a vocaloid discord if the supercell cd+dvd deluxe edition was "lost media" just because they couldn't find it

I felt that in my early/mid twenties at the last miku expo, but this time I didn't even really think about it. Just enjoy the Mikus, kids aren't going to care that there's an old man there unless you're trying to creep on them.

I was born in 2000 so I might fit in with your second category but honestly I felt the same. I'm still mentally in mid 2010s fandom and I still listen to 2007–mid 2010s songs almost exclusively, I don't associate with the western fandom and I do feel myself getting older. But I don't feel any shame or embarrassment from being older amongst a younger crowd. I had shame going to anime events and wearing anime merch and stuff in my teens, and I left it in my teens. I realized that no one really cares. So when I went to Miku Expo LA last Sunday, I just went to have a good time.
The point is, don't worry about anything else and just have fun. I don't know if you like interacting with people, I sure don't and I didn't talk to anyone at the concert, I just had a blast.

How big an impact is having lightsticks? This is my first Vocaloid concert so I didn't put too much thought into them, but as the day approaches I'm starting to wonder if I'm going to miss out on a lot of the energy by not having any.

I've had this feeling too. I'm in my 20s, I got into Vocaloid in 2013, and it feels like the average fan skews even younger than they did back then. I also notice that I have no favorite artists in common more often than not. I dislike most Flavor Foley songs, GHOST arguably peaked in 2019 with Honey I'm Home before everyone who isn't in the know or who hasn't interacted with them personally found out they suck, I can't stand modern Deco, and if I were to show the average newgen fan Utsu-P they'd probably hate it. We both seem to like Sasuke Haraguchi and occasionally whoducers in the WVF though, despite how much I despise the behavior of the community towards myself and countless others.

The japanese and chinese understand societal and social cohesian meanwhile america and north america put emphasis on "independence and freedom" which drives us apart. People in america separate from the gross others' while people in japan take the fucking train like a society that wasnt' lobbied by big oil into making the least efficient way of getting around and ruining the planet at the same time.

On the Japanese side I really like Utsu-P, Machigerita, Joruzin, Xitoo, Azari, Tsumikusa, Masarada, Otone, Nulut, EZFG, Nashimoto Ui, and Akuno-P.
Obviously Azari and Masarada are huge with newgens though. I don't blame them for being drawn to it.

I didnt have one in 2024 miku expo and its pretty different without it. Buy a cheap binwo unless you want to stand in line for a $60 at the event. HIGHLY recommend having one. Its very fun IF you actually know the songs and can match waving it around.
It was kinda funny seeing people not match up when they didnt know the song. like when Kaitos song came on

It's because they're mostly teenage girls. Young girls in fandoms are often very vindicative but aren't used to see things that make them uncomfortable on the internet and don't have anything to care about that's more important than a sexual Miku song. Nowadays they love the culture war bullshit, but before that they were insulting each other for liking the wrong ship, they've always been retarded. Teenage boys are dumb too but in a different way.
>>50910632

I feel the same about expo. I don't know how to say it but there is something very off putting about the way western zoomers behave on these concerts. They are loud, annoying, inconsiderate and really seem like only care about all of this on surface level. I don't really feel like that on magical mirai. There I felt like I was surrounded by die hard fans and that everyone was there to celebrate something they all share love for, not to just be on le Miku concert.

Her era is long gone. She peaked around 2015 when everyone and tried to make Kagepro knockoffs and OCs starting taking over. It's been 10 years since then, so as much as I hate to say it really is not that strange for her to be forgotten. The vocaloid scene is ever changing after all. I only got into this two years ago or so, but for what it's worth, I was 29 at the time and I'm 31 now, and I've never felt what you're feeling, not really. I was self-conscious at first, sure, but pretty quickly I realized that there are people of all ages and descriptions who are into vocaloid, and nobody ever once made me feel unwelcome or too old or alienated in any way. Like sure, the younger fans are way too fixated on Mesmerizer and have other tastes and habits that I can't relate to, but that's just how it is when you've got a popular hobby. You've been into this longer than I have, so I can't say with certainty that your feelings have more of an internal basis, but I surely suspect that they do.
>>
>>50909787
I went without one last month, but I'm super reserved and honestly kinda awkward at concerts, so I knew before I ever got there that wotagei was beyond me. I certainly would've liked to have been part of the crowd though. If you do as well, and don't have my same hang ups, then definitely get one. But if you can't/don't, it's not like you're gonna seem out of place. My show had quite a few people without lightsticks who were still managing to have a good time.

I know the feeling. It's getting harder to hide that I'm getting middle aged. I normally don't even care but I try to hide it on occasions like this and anime conventions.
I don't even hate young people or western fans. I just want to blend in and have fun.
On the plus side, beyond physical appearance, I don't think it matters that much. Until like 4 years ago I just assumed everyone I interacted with online was around my age. It never occurred to me that I was interacting with teenagers.
Ultimately, I think everyone just wants to fit in: teenagers want to be seen as mature so they act older. I'm still mentally 24 or whatever.
>>
>>50911365
I'm in the same boat. Also a zoomer who used to be a casual listener and lost interest around the GHOST era, but around 2019 23.exe pulled me back in and made me remember what I liked about Vocaloid.

I'm right there with you. In my experience, "Age is just a number" is one of those ideas you dismiss out of hand when you're young, and only later realize is mostly true. I figured things would be much different for me when I hit my 30s, but apart from a bit of teasing from my younger friends, nobody treats me differently because I never started acting differently

I don't know how I feel about Deco anymore. I used to like them a lot, probably my top artist there for a bit but at the same time, it really seems like they are just writing the same exact song over and over. The whole depressive/abusive/dysfunctional love theme. That really should've been an album at best. I guess I feel like his music is just exhausting to listen to now. I guess it's what people want but its like geez man get out of that rut.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>50915918
This is probably a good summary. Better yet, in addendum to my earlier post, the songs themselves aren't even bad, the theme is beyond played out. The best thing that could be done with that continued theme is really what he's doing with Milgram Project. For standalone stuff though, it gets hard.

Monitoring is a kind of unrequitted love story, and the fact the lyrics aren't changed in the Best Friend Remix (maybe a word or two) just shows how "caring" Miku is for her friend or crush. Sure, there's a sexual element but it's not about the "presentation hurting" that is in Rabbit hole nor the "tired of sex" in Sad girl sex.

For what it's worth, the screen they're using this year is a massive improvement. I wouldn't let the screen keep you from going

well you can start with the "just kill me already" line in terms of the awkward party-going girl whose perspective is sung in this song. I am guessing the "Maybe I am the weird one" or the "actually I hate you" is sensitivity in her extrovertedness but rejection from the party she's in because she immediately hates the people around her. This isn't formated well cuz i just woke up and I am doing this as fast as I can.
I relate this to Lost Umbrella with the "the candy I never tried but hated." line during the really fast part. Inabakumori

Miku definitely, Rin and Len get some sporadic love, some females care about Kaito, no one cares about Luka, Meiko is a literal who among them. For not Crypton characters, Teto is way way more popular, surpassing the Kagamines and only second to Miku. Some youngsters knows Gumi but don't care at all, Zundamon has a small niche (I think she might be more recognizable than Gumi among new fans) and another small group knows about Defoko and Adachi Rei. Everyone else is a literal who.

whenever google docs drop about western producers/utau people, i sometimes wonder if there's this level of drama on the jp end that we don't see or if there's really something wrong with the english community. it is odd that it usually seems to happen on one side more than the other, but that could just be it doesn't get reported that commonly on the JP end.
>>
>>50936650
It's almost certainly the former. Too much is made of the cultural differences between ourselves and the Japanese. People are people at the end of the day, and there's almost certainly an equivalent level of drama on the other side that we aren't privy to.
>>
>>
>>

Japan definitely has drama but it rarely breaches the Western side, one of the few times I remember it breaching the West was when Masa doxed a child, but that didn't result in a doc. I notice a lot less Japanese and English comments compared to Russian ones now.
That said, part of why the West has so much drama is that almost every producer or cover artist is in a clique past a certain point and most of the Western drama are producer circles warring with one another. Almost all callout songs involve producer vs producer drama.

> if there's this level of drama on the jp end that we don't see
MARETU cheated in his fiance with a fan, PUSU stabbed his teenage girlfriend and there’s even more smaller cases of miku fans being predators (albeit this doesn’t happen terribly often).
The Japanese tend to vague post about drama instead of directly quoting it unless it’s worth doing so (more likely with the latter scenarios than the former), so maybe that’s why you’ve never seen drama from their side.

>Pusu
I'm still saddened by this. I knew him from back when he was still known as Zips and he made cool songs with my wife. Back then all he had was an IA samfree inspired song, and TUYU wasn't even a thing. Like I can't believe he lost his mind, what even happened to him to cause him to make such a stupid decision?
