The Confederate flag looks nothing like the stars and bars. The stars and bars are a very specific battle flag and they don't particularly represent anything beyond the fighting spirit of the south. Pic related is the actual flag that represents the politics of the Confederate States of America.
I find the banning of the Confederate battle flag very weird. It'd be like banning samurai stuff in Japan because samurai, at times, committed some pretty fucked up acts. But it's still a cultural touchstone that represents bushido and the fighting spirit of Japan. Or like saying, well, we need to take down all celebratory pictures of WW2 and V-Day when the allies won because we still had racial segregation in the US at the time WW2 ended, or some shit like that.
