Later in the story they meet an old lady, who gives them the first un-canned food they've had in years. She tells them that she's spent the whole apocalypse waiting for her daughter to return; they reveal that they came from the direction of her daughter's town and of course there's no living people to be found anywhere. She takes this surprisingly well, I guess it's not shocking news and she doesn't blame the girls for bringing it.

She sits by the window and dies as soon as they leave. Of course Sadako probably did it. I mean, she can look at people and make them die, right? Sadako wears the shoes for the entire rest of the manga. I want to cry at the idea of giving Sadako shoes. I am such a pussy. But I feel like this answers something from Koji Suzuki's mind, Sadako can love and she deserves to be loved. So what if she crawls out of a TV and murders somebody every once in a while? When a publisher hits a jackpot they force the writer to make more eventually forcing them to write bigger plot twists and higher stakes to the point that it becomes ridiculous. In anime it always ends up with DBZ battles and space aliens. In Jap literature and fiction it always ends up in pseudointellectual babble where plebs won't ever "get it". Because if you notice most Jap writers don't care about coherence or writing a satisfying story but what they really want is to feel superior to their audience.
