Jesus fucking Christ.
It was already bad enough that when you quickly want to pull reference of something from a vidya game, the first results from Google were/are from fandom wikis.
It was already ultra shitty these wikis scraped old websites at their content (images), and took years old jpgs and pngs and converted everything to webp.
Which means any time I want to ref something and post on 4chan I need to copy paste and throw it into Paint and resave as png, because 4chan doesn't accept webp (good, its a cancer format). I also can't open webp images in my old Windows photo viewer either.
Now every FUCKING wiki for a game and everything else on fandom has Cloudflare checkpoint shit turned on (this happened a few weeks ago). Why does this shit need to be everywhere? It's on 4chan. It's on nearly every 4chan archive too. I always need to wait for this crap to load and click I am not a robot. When I die if you added up all the times I needed to wait to prove I was never a robot, you will find I wasted so much time online clicking these checkpoints. And I fucking love when they fail for no reason and you need to do it again.
Oh, you thought one checkpoint was good for the day? Nope, these things reset every few hours. So if you browse alot, you need to prove alot.
I hate the modern internet so much. What happened to old school vidya forums without this Cloudflare garbage? Don't even get me started on Discord, age verification, etc...

takes up less space, but space is only an concern if you run a site with large amount of data like imageboards, galleries or something like wikipedia.
How much can all the images of bulbapedia take up at the most? 8-15gb? It shouldn't be an issues for these small wikis to just use jpeg and png.

AI turned data scraping into an endemic internet problem, forcing website after website to implement these measures to avoid being DDoS'd to death. When 2020 came around, almost none of these websites had these checks, but once AI came along, I saw websites start to implement this one by one. If not Cloudflare, it'll just be Anubis. AI has a had profoundly negative effect on the internet and everyone who isn't a delusional tech-utopian richfag thoroughly regrets that Pandora's Box being opened.

It's because of LLM training bots. They rape sites, and wikis get particularly fucked in the ass because they have a bunch of different ways for users to pull data from their databases through hyperlinks (just look at all the dynamic links in pic rel, those are all going to be uncached requests from the database) and bots spam every single one nearly non-stop. You basically have to have some form of anti-bot measure in place to run a site nowadays thanks to AI.

>AI turned data scraping into an endemic internet problem
Did you know Deviantart, which has been free to browse without an account for 25 years, recently garden walled their site? Like every fucking place these days, you now need to log in.
They would claim data scraping to be sure, but its just to collect your data and sell you ads.
How much longer will it be before every aspect of internet culture is hid behind a login wall? What if 4chan ever did that? People would flip out...and then sign up.

Deviantart has always required an account to view anything not squeaky clean. The real example you're looking for is Twitter, which after getting bought by Muskrat aggressively locked down its API to the point it almost completely killed Nitter. The site now only keeps public the absolute bare minimum to be indexable by search engines. YouTube has also been going down this path and it's lead to an ever-increasing struggle for projects like Invidious and Freetube.

>Deviantart has always required an account to view anything not squeaky clean.
I am aware of that anon.
But now when you visit a gallery or someones favorites, they have blocked the pagination with a login block. You can't browse the site. This happened about 10 or so days ago iirc.
And a while back they also made it so you could no longer search the site without an account too.
And yeah I hated Twitter for what that clown did and I loved Nitter it made browsing so much better.

>I hate Cloudflare so fucking much bros.
And you know whats funny?
People use it for anti ddos measures, among other things
But if someone attacked Cloudflare itself.
Half the fucking internet would go down because so many sites require you to clear checkpoints.
Back in April you couldn't post to 4chan for two days because the captcha wouldn't load, and the captcha is Cloudflare dependent (iirc).
>>
>>
>>
>>738691746

because AI scrapers are effectively ddosing websites. happened to me as well, I ended up banning the ip range, but I don't run a site big enough to warrant the attention of major crawlers.

it's developed by google. It had an security vulnerability that would allow someone to remote code execution.
https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2023-4863
It was apple who discover it not google themselves. Maybe an oversight by google or it was by design, because they wanted to exploit this themselves.
In sort lack of trust.
>>
>>738693524
>Why don't we have webp support here?
because implementing isn't just adding it to a list of extensions. autists like that cp spammer guy running the proxy site is coming up with new ways to embed cp into posted files, so there would need to be a way to make sure webp files can be cleaned for it to be allowed.
look at the leaked source code, there's an asinine amount of effort put into making sure files can't contain embeds. jpg file headers are analyzed in hexadecimal notation for the image chunk size and if the file is 5% larger it will get blocked. same for png IDAT chunks. jpegs, webms and mp4s also get remuxed.
desuwa would need to find ways to do all of that with webp too, although I suppose you could remux it with ffmpeg maybe since webp is, from what I recall, a vp8 keyframe...

The third world happened.
Pretty much 99% of my job as a web admin now is dealing with thirdies and thirdie related bullshit. DDOS attempts, chink bot farms, sea bot farms (which are mostly chinks still), jeet shill groups, spam bots and worst of all is the constant data scraping, so much of web traffic is just bots data scraping which is why you're having to deal with cloudfare shit everywhere, and now AI data scraping is even fucking worse, again mostly out of china and india.
Either nuke the third world or physically cut off western internet from their nations.

>save as webp and convert
You're missing the point man.
Those images should have never been converted to begin with.
At some point you're going to have image degradation.
I have plenty of OLD screencaps, old renders, promo art, for vidya and cartoons I grabbed off of fan sites ages ago in the 2000s. Much of that stuff is on fandom wikis now but now those oldschool files have been converted to webp.
One of those wiki sites allowed you to edit the image url and chop off the webp part to get the "original" file, but even that is a pain in the ass if you want to save alot. Always needing to view source the URL.
And the other wiki site just gives a 404 when you try and get around the webp.
>>
>>
>>738694347
Just to be clear I mean those original jpgs and pngs from 20 years ago should not have been converted to webp for wiki use.
20 year old PNG, to webp, then you what, use an addon to make it back to PNG? Retarded, and now the file is modified.
Fucking stupid how decades ago when server space and bandwidth was a premium we posted jpgs and shit fine, but in the 2020s we need to start COMPRESSING everything with webp despite how much bigger storage is now.

Because bots and AI agents made by jeets keep scraping shit from other people's websites or being used for bot spam from the third world.
Same reason why catbox now blocks all datacenter and proxy IPs.
>>
>>738698530
Well, they weren't. In the 00s some websites still had those visitor number banners that were more popular in the 90s. Then the "robots" came that are still referred as such in HTML rules that didn't really scrape everything constantly but just index the site once and only for the biggest search engines that had the money for an operation like that. Now everyone and their mother is spamming the internet with AI bots that not only scrape stuff for their own databanks but also spam searches all over the internet for every query.
>>
>>738698530
>t. someone who's never run a site and knows nothing on the topic
Scrapers only scrap updated content pages, and (generally) respect robots.txt, while using a useragent to announce themselves. AI bots scrap literally fucking everything, over and over and over again and don't give a fuck, and will do it over thousands of IP addresses and multiple ASNs to make it extremely difficult to block.

>>
>>738698693
>you got a point. what would the purpose of doing that be?
Besides being able to retain the original metadata, it also helps distinguish between primary/full FAQs and partial ones that cover something specific like an item list only or a single character only guide. But I already said that:
>with the faqs being final_fantasy_vii_(letter).txt, and the rest being auxillary or partial guides.
so
>final_fantasy_vii_a.txt
>final_fantasy_vii_b.txt
>final_fantasy_vii_c.txt
...
>final_fantasy_vii_l.txt
are the primary "full" walkthroughs/guides on the site, and
>final_fantasy_vii_bone.gif
>final_fantasy_vii_glacier.png
>final_fantasy_vii_lists.txt
>final_fantasy_vii_missable.txt
are specific in-depth guides.
like, if I don't want a 800k guide to dig into but just a item list, this is helpful.
With the filenames dead you have to check 100 files named
>5th\ps\197341-final-fantasy-vii\faqs\197341-final-fantasy-vii-faqs-(g uide id#).txt
to find out whichever one of those has a, say, missable item list in them.

One of the wikis I was looking at was being mainly edited by someone who said he never played the mod himself and only watched youtubers play it. I write extensively detailed documents about mods I want to make that are way out of my scope right now, but someone who actually put the skill, hours and effort in coding, modeling, animating, debugging etc either gives no information or not enough information, so you have to rely on the aforementioned worthless wikis or 1-5 reply reddit threads from years ago where half the answers are "idk". These are mods with millions of downloads, and people can't answer basic questions about the mechanics. Is wiki autism mutually exclusive from the autism that drives you to actually create things to make a wiki about? Is this a gatekeeping or anti-spoonfeeding thing where you're supposed to dig through and analyze the code yourself if you want to know why x happens or how to do y?
Sorry for blogfagging. I guess this was what minecraft mod showcases were for, but they died off for the most part.

>Why does this shit need to be everywhere?
Scrapers assraping the internet for AI training data and automated LLM websearches.
Bots and random DDOSes already made cloudflare popular but LLMs really bulldozed the internet. You want to host that wiki now and you simply get choked to death by claude querying your site 900 times checking and re-checking what banjo kazooie's feet smell like to better roleplay with an autistic user.

Programming takes a long time and you forget what exactly you did a long time ago. And if you want to check, you just search the source code, because you obviously know how to read it. Documentation seems important, but for a personal project the intended audience is the person making it, and to that person documentation doesn't matter very much at all.
>>
>>
>>738702401
Being fair, there's a genuinely real chance that the mod developer is like, 13 and is literally just doing whatever.
Wasn't notch's code practically unreadable dogshit until 4j helped clean it up and write documentation for it?
>>
>>738702401
Because you want to spend the time writing the code or modeling, or whatever. Writing up documentation is fucking BORING and tedious. Also, autismos put way more stock into things being completely intentional than the person who made it. It's like how nerds would over analyze the subtext of star wars scenes but george lucas probably just thought it was cool, or the endless lore discussions about any modern game. The dev said damage = (some mechanic), tested it for a few minutes, thought it seemed fine and moved on with their lives. So when you ask how does the mechanic work, they just don't remember or care

>NO ONE WAS SCRAPING DATASETS BEFORE DAH AI
I used to write scrapers for a living, automated account balance checking for a fintech company because banks didnt have API's
there was so much work involved it was a full time job for 1 person to maintain ~10 scrapers, they'd break all the time and we'd be incentivized to have as little traffic as possible to avoid detection.
now anyone can make a scraper any time to do anything in seconds. The barrier to entry is through the floor, which means there's infinity more scrapers than before.
for fun go put a box up on AWS with public net access and watch the logs roll in, literally 100's of attempts a second guessing your admin password and routes over and over.

most countries will be making laws that ban AI scraping for news sites since AI summary makes news financially non viable. Is not fair business.
you can complain all you want about news sites being shit or biased but at the end of the day law will protect the one doing the labor. AI companies are not news outlets nor they do the job.
it would be different if AI companies will send people to investigate but they don't, and just like that many other businesses will complain. AI will be regulated. taxed to oblivion and so unable to operate for Free. No free people wont care and the whole market will collape.
Ai won't die but it wont be as accessible as it is now.

as I said it doesn't matter. This is not something about adapting to new technology. AI won't be able to give news summaries if the ones that bring news die. there will be no source. and that's what the law will promote. A good and better product doesn't need to steal from the rival to exist.
if you sell Gasoline2.0 that is cheaper and makes a car run faster. won't be seen fair or legal if in order to produce it you need to steal regular gas. you have to make your own or buy it.
again the original product can be the worst shit ever. you can't steal it.
the problem with news is that can't be trained. it has to be stolen daily because it cannot be predicted.

opinons from whom? another source that will complain you can't take it.
even garbage like twitter will block others because Xnews or some bs.
AI will financially collapse as soon any law that prevent content stealing in any form.
most countries are just waiting for any law to be used as precedent.
after that any company that tries to sell IA will be sued to hell If they don't show the receipts. random retard on internet don't have the resources to make AI scrapers and farm financially available either.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>

MP4 is not a format. is a container. the video that's inside can be different things unlike webp (1 type of image)
iirc MP4 support older codecs and x264,265,266,av1 an that's a lot more than webm. so MP4 can be a lot better than WEBM.
and no. you didn't try MP4 compression. you tried some video codec compression. who knows, maybe you used MPEG1 video codec. aka VCD quality and you didn't notice.
>>
>>738708214
Well then you're going to have to enlighten me for free on optimizing my mp4s, I often have to double up on the same video for both 4chan and discord (game dev posting), h265 and av1 seems like my best options(?) but they always look way worse than my webms while taking up more space no matter how much I fiddle with cropping and resizing and bitrate
>>
>>738708118
I know. what I mean Is just that. AI is just one law away from collapse. we all know law updates are not the fastest ones. I'm pretty sure somewhere some powerful retard is really tired of his shit being stolen.
>>
>>738708406
maybe you're a retard expecting hardware encode to do a better job than software. AMF, NVENC or QUICkSYNC are just garbage only to be used for streaming. VP8 and VP9 most of the times are software encoded and their defaults are good.
IU'm no expert but when it comes to good encodes you need to set the profiles to the max and do more than 1 pass. even Xvid had 3pass compression. lower the framerate, resolution, amount of noise or colors. etc.
>>
>>738708408
Literally the law as written it's illegal, already.
No new laws need to be written on the book, and this actually would be completely within the purview of legitimate copyright issues, unlike extra measures outside the scope of the copyright law that are written so fucking poorly that technically engaging with any media at all could be a felony offense.
>>
>>738708568
new law where? where are the lawsuits. some shit will be taken as precedent eventually. no country wants their shit stolen. it could be japan, america, france, even TV channels from fucking chile are suing google.
>>
>>
>>738708663
>new law where?
Again, you illiterate fuck, it's already illegal, technically I'm pretty sure laws on the book "close enough" to be both new and specific to this kind of issue go as early as the first vocaloids.
>Where are the lawsuits
Nobody wants to rip the bandaid off on the fucked state of copyright law that can actually fight it in court and set precedent that's bad for both parties.

vocaloid actors were paid just like every system that had text to speech. the issue is that AI is the blatant copyright infringement machine so the bandaid "will be" ripped even if they don't want it. it will happen. is just a matter of when. that's all I'm saying

And there's a trick anyway if the internet sucks, Cloudflare Warp.
I route my v6 IP through their VPN, and that gives me a Cloudflare v4 IP as well, which is unblocked anywhere, lol, because of v6, which fewer people use, I always get the best route that's never overwhelmed.

Yeah it's (as expected) a very small change in the HTML tags used for webm filenames. Always check what you're updating for if you don't 100% trust the source, in this case it's just that webm fix and removing the update URL (so your script shouldn't update on its own, you'd have to go check yourself for updates whenever something breaks, which is probably for the best security wise here)

No, I wouldn't play that garbage or any other MMO if you paid me to
But offline Wow has been a thing for ages at this point with azerothcore, not sure how advanced the bots there are - ie whether it actually simulates them doing quests and farming or just spawns shit appropriate to the local content level within render distance. Hook up a chatbot to NPCs (which was already done in "where winds meet" so the technology exists) and you're there already. This isn't future tech, this is today tech, assuming you have the money to run those chatbots locally (a big ask). Give it a decade or two assuming civilization doesn't collapse by then (even bigger ask) and you'll probably be able to run it locally using today's models that will likely be pathetically outdated by then but that'd be the price of running several hundred of them at once to simulate an entire MMO server

It takes like two seconds to make any video file a webm, and it can be done while you're compressing and muting it.

This is a pretty good take as well.
I'm thinking of enabling webp on my own altchan, but have it dynamically converted to jpeg with 50% quality or something so it looks absolute dogshit.
But that guy suggesting converting it to JXL sounds way, way, way funnier.

I wish someone would make an alternate internet that doesn't allow bots or third worlders to access it so we can go back to an internet by humans, for humans, like it was in the '90s and '00s.

>NO ONE WAS SCRAPING DATASETS BEFORE DAH AI
Have you seen what AI scrapers do? You get an entire subnet of IPs making 100+ queries per second. A normal scraper is built specifically so it does not put too high load on the server, to get around automatic blocks. AI scrapers aren't scraping your site, they are DDOSing it.
>>
>>738691746
The best part is that it centralizes the internet, so if Cloudflare goes down for any reason it knocks 99%+ of websites offline.
If someone wanted to break the internet, they now have 1 fat target.
>>
>>738703638
You should be more pissed that they allowed webm with no sound for years because so much muted webm content exists now as a result of 4chan being a large place to post them.
Every other fucking image board I have visited (alt chans) has sound on webms *and* mp4s, for years! Getting to post mp4s here without sound was a waste of fucking time.
But they will claim "4chan is an imageboard, not a videoboard."
Like fuck off, adapt or die.
And clearly after moot left, they did not adapt (left the site an outdated mess), and they almost did in fact die.

>Recently they placed a limit of 10 weekly uses of the Download button per account, and even subscription ones only get 150
That is absolute and utter bullshit they did that.
And that even for someone who pays, there is a limit (I assume 150 per week).
I used to archive several artist galleries, and download many images per day. Saved manually. Now? That same gallery that has over 500 or 1000 images would take for fucking ever to save with an limit on 10 per week. Not even 10 per day, week!
And this also sucks because many people load references to Deviantart, screenshots and such, and now its like they don't want you to download any of it.
>Now I have a txt file with a dozen throwaways to login with a different browser when I actually want to save submissions as something better than shitty shrunk jpegs
Isn't the downloading based on IP address? Even so loging in and out is a massive pain in the ass.
>>738709440
I don't know how to do any of that.

>so if Cloudflare goes down for any reason it knocks 99%+ of websites offline.
Which is what happened recently, either with Cloudflare or with Amazon AWS. When Iran got invaded recently, they replied with bombing a datacenter in the UAE and knocking out a large part of western internet with it.

Yes and no, some sites want your personal data to sell and an account to compare against "accidental" database breaches.

What's the issue with Webp exactly aside from not all applications supporting it?
It uses less storage while still maintaining quality. If certain websites and apps not using the format is an issue, then maybe they just need to catch up?

>your ublock is probably blocking https://spur.us/
Ublock had its lists updated to allow spur.us and mcl.io like two days after 4chan added them. And if he uses firefox on desktop, 4chan is broken on that and automatically defaults to a way higher threat score, which gives you the "your IP is temporarily banned" for weeks at a time, and 3-4x captchas for like a month, before it dials things back down to only showing 1 captcha. If you kill cookies when closing firefox, it gets worse since you always get max captcha difficulties since you count as a new poster every time.

apparently it only fails with chromium + privacy extensions. Use firefox and it's fine.
My guess is: chromium is so pozzed that it expects a number of things from it that users can't turn off like webRTP and canvas, and when those are off, it just assumes you're a bot. Since you can turn those off on firefox, it doesn't care.

Internet was the last hope at lifting the veil of lies but it seems we are already too late.
