I was in japan recently and had to hire an interpreter for a certain tour
The interpreter turned out to be a pretty regular looking American dude of completely average height who moved to Japan, went to a japanese uni, met his future wife while in uni and now they have a kid
Dude is living the dream tbqh

But if you become fluent enough in english pronounciation you can safely guess how a word is pronounced by reading it. In Japanese if you see a word with a kanji you never seen before you can't know how to pronounce it unless you pull up a dictionary.

kanji that you are less likely to see often tend to have the same or similar reading to other kanji that it shares parts with
or they will be written with furigana telling you the reading because japanese people can't always read them either

Stick to English guys, i swear the more Japanese you learn the crazier and harder it gets, it’s like the more you learn the less you know.

The editor can paste the original bits that need rework into a LLM and see the thoughts of why it was translated like that, its actually far better than trying to talk to a new translator who can't explain shit.
>>
>>738728108
The "translator" overseeing an AI translation would comparatively need a much lower level of skill to do the same job, though the AI can theoretically also explain nuance and idiom to a non-speaker.

The dragonbaby were so incompetent they didn't just add woke shit and zoomer slang there. They literally fucked up ids/keys and swapped some lines around. If you are playing with official translation you not only get subpar experience, but some dialogues will just not make any sense. This is only an issue with english translations, all other languages seem fine.

I started learning Japanese at my 30th birthday, and now ~9 months in I am N5.
This is actually my second attempt. First was when I was ~18yo and I was filtered by kana so hard I gave up after 3 weeks. I thought I am total ngmi and now after 10 years of smoking weed daily my brain will definitely not hold on any new knowledge. And despite all that, just because I was bored and decided to give it another try, I just did it and it worked. I just had to find different method than writing down kana which was what everyone recommended to me, and I managed to learn it in like 2 weeks. And then it all just clicked from there. A grammar book, anki for words, trying to read some stuff online or watch videos in Japanese. Now I'm looking into some simple manga or VN to start with immersion.
You can do it.
>i learnt english naturally
>compared to trying to learn japanese now as an adult it's night and day
That's because your original language is mostly likely much more similar to English than to Japanese. With Japanese you need to learn a fundamentally different way of composing words and sentences, on top of all the kana and kanji autism which is completely alien to western people.

It takes first grade JP children a year to learn 80 kanji and 2nd graders a year for the next 160. After that is 200 300 per year. I know like 100 already and I've just been drawing kanji in my free time and doing Anki. I've been learning Japanese for like 3 months.

Lemme break it down
>8 hours of sleep

>2 hours of spending time with the missus
Workdays are already gone

It offers etymological clues, unlike most of the rare words you encounter in Japanese. For instance, if I see "jeremiad," my first thought goes to the name Jeremiah. If the context is talking about a literary work being "jeremiad," then I'll know it's related to the prophet who wrote the longest book in the bible about the destruction of Israel.

grana, as in "gra była grana", a game was played, nobody talks like that
grani, graniach, graniami, graniom, grań means literall "a ridge", nobody uses it in context of games

niegraniom
niegraniami
all these are not used by any normal person, they are(?) technically gramatically correct but it's bullshit, language noone uses
also this whole chart is misleading, it's like "look how much conjugation there is!" but in reality you can easily do shit like switching between male/female form or whatever if you know some basic rules, like

śpiewałem > śpiewałam

children take like 10 years to learn how to speak like an adult can, arguably up to 18 years in some cases. you can learn a language in like 2 years. yeah you won't be as fluent as a native speaker but they've got so many years on you that expecting otherwise would be silly. i don't get where this "only children can learn a language" meme comes from, it's totally backwards.

>>738727180
No you cannot
You think you do because you are either a native english speaker or you are an ESL that has been exposed to english for so long that you start to intuit how the stupid spelling of this language works.
Hell even American and British kids have difficulty with non common words, some can't even read "oversimplified" correctly and it is not even a hard work, the whole GH bullshit that english has also confuses ELS and younger/dumber native kids too
>>
>>
>>
>>738741389
Yes it is, japan uses the same Adjective - Subject interactions as english. a native english speaker would not do that mistake, must be some one from some other language where the interaction is reversed like Portuguese or Spanish

N3 is
>600 kanji
>3.5-4k words
>just enough grammar to begin to understand native content, although you're still missing a bunch of common expressions
It's just about enough to begin immersing provided you accept that you'll have your nose in the dictionary for pretty much anything you decide to watch/read. I didn't feel comfortable even reading an "easy" Visual Novel until I had at least studied triple that amount of kanji

>>738743572
Nigger
JAPANESE is an adjective in English, and if you meant the language, that is still a subject
You should have gone for "Japanese Student" becoming Nihongo no Seito
Gaku is used when you are still in school or on that age (at least is what my sensei told me years ago)
>>
>>738743836
The sentence has four blank spaces. Each word given goes into one space
They're specifically asking you to give them the word that appears in the space that has a star in it
It's more involved because you have to be able to figure out the full sentence before you can give the answer

"I ____ _____ _____ __星_”
a) Hate
b) Fucking
c) Games
d) Video
Which one of the above represents the 星 anon?

You think that doujin would be a great way to motivate you into learning since you want to know what is happening to keep your dick hard, but now you have to concentrate harder to try to figure out what is happening and your brain tries to cheat on you by looking at the pictures intead of the text and now you are only reading the few katakana moans and nothing else
>>
>learn japanese thread
>no one tells you how apart from learn the kanas and anki
Anki is so fucking slow tho. I got a premade deck and learned maybe 100-150 words sure but it took me over month to do so. There is no way thats the most efficient way to learn Japanese.
>make your own anki bro
This is also slow as fuck
Why would I do this over input and talking with native speakers?
It is the best way to learn how to listen and speak Japanese. Which is what actually matters if you are interested in watching anime, visiting Japan, finding a Japanese wife, etc..
>>
>>
>>
No one cares if you can read Japanese..I guess it is an important skill, but speaking and understanding is 100x more impressive and much more important in the real world.
If you are in a Japanese city, you may need to know how to read the words for Bar, Hotel, Toilet, room number etc.
But you know what you will be doing much more? Talking to actual Japanese workers. Knowing how to do this without a horrific accent(something most of you absolutely have) is more important than knowing how to read something like
>The short haired girl wanders into the forest to find the potion she was looking for
Or some retarded shit like that.
If you REALLY like Manga, cool. But it just seems like a huge waste of time to focus on that rather than actually speaking Japanese.

>learn Japanese purely for my own enjoyment
>people keep asking how I'm going to use it to earn money
Why are people so soulless that they can't even entertain the idea of doing something for pure personal interest?
>>
>>
>>738744748
There's three components to Japanese: kanji, grammar and vocab
Get a system to learn kanji (most will teach 2k), go over Tae Kim's grammar guide to get a feel for the language and, once you have a decent amount of kanji, get a beginner vocab deck in Anki and grind it (10-15 new words a day at the start)
By the time you have a few thousand words and a few hundred kanji learned, you can start reading easier stuff. You keep building up vocab daily and slowly move onto harder and harder stuff until you eventually hit native content
>>
>>
>>738744748
Because no one here SPEAKS japanese
we all know just enough to read a bit here and there but no one here is fully fluent and even if there was some one here that is, they probably can't explain how they got to that level
>>
>>
>>738744949
>people keep asking how I'm going to use it to earn money
What's their age?
From my experience, zoomers are incapable of having hobbies and all they ever do is motivated by either making money or getting engagment on social media(so they can monetize it).
>>
>>738744949
Because making money matters in every single instance of your life because you need money to survive and it can make your life better and learning a language especially Jap is a HUGE opportunity cost if you dont use it to make money.
You can use it to translate, you can use it be a teacher, and if you are good enough to get any job in Japan. If you are just learning it to read manga and hentai books or whatever yes that seems like a retarded waste of time.
You should learn how to speak and understand Japanese if you want to make money from it.
>>
>>
>>738745092
Everyone, but especially people 40+.
>>738745142
Languages are a terrible way to make money, even worse is that practically everyone who asked me why I don't use Japanese to make money already knows I make more money than I can even spend with a cushy as fuck job.
>>
And learning Nip to make money is obviously the play because the west or at least my country (USA) is deteriorating and collapsing in real time and I dont desire to live here and Japan, while being a $1100 plane ticket away, is my best bet. The only downside is Im not fluent enough to get a visa but being there for a few months and making money online somehow is my best hope because I dont want to live in this shit hole anymore.

obviously you gotta find someone you enjoy but if you keep putting it off you'll just slow down your learning
>>
>>738745556
>when you can use it to teach or translate
For me personally, I don't want to move to Japan. So that just leaves translations, but that takes years to qualify for and also the pay isn't exactly stellar
If you want to make real money from TL, you don't go into media/anime/games, you translate legal documents, safety manuals, etc. Stuff where if you fuck up, you'll end up actually being responsible for it and which requires native level Japanese to translate, but the money is good. I suppose working as an interpreter also generates good money but that also requires quick thinking and people skills, so it's not for everyone

Most Japanese women are not interested in dating foreigners. The ones who are (and aren't whores) expect you to be native level because they're not going to lower themselves to your level.

Don't worry too much about trying to construct your own sentences at this point

私は日本語の生徒です is technically correct but is extremely unnatural
日本語を勉強しています is more natural at least, although maybe overly polite. You don't need to say 私, people know you're talking about yourself through context

i would take rough AI translations over malicious localizers at this point, they have been fucking with translations for decades, they have erased a whole game's worth of dialogue and replaced it with their failed writer oc drivel multiple times and have been given every fucking chance to correct the course, but they still keep messing with things they shouldnt, now they can all starve for all i care

The good news is AI translation matches the quality of a very proficient English translator, so we aren't even sacrificing quality of writing anymore.
Also, localizers genuinely miss 99% of the jokes/puns/references, so it's not like they're even cultural experts.

It's a hybrid rhythm adventure game that received a pretty botched translation, but only in English. The creator had to apologize and correct many of the changes, though the game is still largely inaccurate. OP is suggesting people learn Japanese to avoid this.

It's a game that got vandalized by woke localizers who inserted stereotypical US-centric political messages, censored some stuff and removed references to other VNs, anime, games, etc. They also fucked up and swapped some lines around making the dialogue nonsensical.
This issue is only with English translation, other languages and Japanese are fine.

Who said anything about a literal translation? Also, a translator is not beholden to maintain the wording of another translator. Often translated works from Japan will have multiple versions of the same line, depending on how the anime, manga, and fans approached it.

>Who said anything about a literal translation?
An AI more often than not will not catch non-trivial referenced and so will translate things literally.
>Also, a translator is not beholden to maintain the wording of another translator. Often translated works from Japan will have multiple versions of the same line, depending on how the anime, manga, and fans approached it.
That does not conflict with anything I've said.

An AI will absolutely catch a non-trivial reference. I ran every reference line into Gemini from Yunyun and it caught every one, which even I was surprised about. The official localizers caught...uh...oh that's right, zero.

Nah. I have Russian non-MTL direct JP > RU translation without trannylators.

I can't since I don't have the script available, nor do I feel like hunting them all down, but I can tell you that from memory it caught the Fate, Food Wars, FFVII, Rance, Jojo, and sister creepypasta ones without issue.

Well well, after all you've managed to go trough nearly 7000 lines of text and find and verify all the references in the game. And there is a lot more than the 6 you've mentioned. I am sure you must had put a lot of work into accomplishing something like that and at least have written down some notes during that process. One does not simply spent so much effort into something without at least having a document or two with your findings.

If you're also not learning Uchinaguchi + Ainu + Learning Japanese in the Tsugaru dialect = ngmi

Oh, I didn't realize you were a localizer. Here, let me refine my statement: "I ran every reference line that I personally could find and/or saw posted by someone else. In every case, I found that the AI also was able to inform me of the reference during my initial translation, without special instruction."

Good enough to read Yotsuba, Azumanga Daioh, and start sentence mining (and your own Anki deck). I wish I did it sooner even at 500 Kanji

They aren't, that's a lie people perpetuate to sound wordly. They are very slow to change and people who don't understand the culture nor speak a word of Japanese misinterpret that as xenophobic. Half of Tokyo is foreigners at this point, which is something you don't get if you're a "xenophobic" people.

It can't be that difficult to at least get a Nikkei gf and work yourself from there if you live in the Americas (USA, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, and Peru have big Japanese communities)
