It just doesn’t feel authentic. There’s just a certain “soul” that would be required to exist in a project like this for me to enjoy it, and this doesn’t have it. It’s very clearly built by people who are enamored with the “idea” of just being a “regular person”, but they’re so disconnected from actual regular people that it comes off as somewhat off-putting. The Ellison connection makes it funnier lol, “look everyone I too enjoy when society was good,” while it all comes off with the same grace as a turbo-autist forced into a social situation outside their comfort zone.
Also, the main girl’s voice pisses me off. She’s trying too hard.
It really does have the bones of something that could be great, but it straight-up refuses to actually engage with anything on a seriously deep or psychological level. Nothing about why she wants to run away to New York, nothing in depth about why the one girl hates her dad so much outside “he’s a cop and authority is bad,” nothing about the stoner dudebro at all really. It’s a shame, honestly. With a better writer, they could’ve very easily ripped every nostalgia-pilled millennial a new asshole about choosing to escapism and living in the past instead of the present, but them’s the breaks, I guess. Wouldn’t expect much from an Ellison to begin with.

I can accept art games getting good reviews. I sure as hell didn't raise a stink when Journey was getting 10/10s.
The thing about Mixtape is that its not a good art game either.
The whole thing is just an impersonal generalization of what the 90s was like- made into an interactive 3 hour game.
It has as much artistic value as scrolling a buzzfeed article about nostalgic 90s toys or watching AI slop of 90s kids going to 90s mcdonalds with 90s haircuts.
The character's don't exist to be characters, they exist to embody well known archetypes from 90s movies so that you reminisce about the 90s some more.
The characters aren't there to actually be looked AT, they're there to be looked THROUGH, like a window.
Reviewers talking about how they "were moved by the characters" are fucking full of it. They're mannequins at the front window of the 90s Nostalgia Store. They're not characters.
The antics and escapades they get up to don't serve any purpose other than "haha! that's what they would do in 90s movies!".
- TPing the hecking teacher's house. Like in the movies!
- Making a getaway from the police by riding a shopping cart. Yup! Just like the movies!
- Discovering an abandoned cabin in the woods and claiming it as your hideout? I remember that from a movie!
- Making a cuhraaaaayzee custom slushie at the convenience store and giving it a wacky name? Dude I LOVE 90s movies!
There is no perspective.
