I want it to be its own thing like Automata was to Replicant. The Nier timeline and setting is great and I hate that Automata having been so successful means that "Nier" is just Nier Automata.

The ending is actually where I hated it the most, but after a long time of thinking about the game and especially replaying it with the full game context it grew on me. I think it's less a game about the actual story beats and more a game about setting and atmosphere and the messages it's trying to convey.

The story pacing is just bizarre, I feels like it reveals tons of things in the reverse order or at least far too late. Based on the first game, Nier is all about multiple "playthroughs" within the one playthrough after getting context which then gives you the full story but in Automata you don't really get that experience until you do a FULL second playthrough of everything.

In one small sense I think it kind of works though just because it really reinforces the feeling that 2B is actually dead dead, if you went back for another route after learning her secret I don't think the tragedy of it all would hit so hard.

But then again, when you go to E everything just gets happy ending saved anyways so maybe it still sucks

It's directly set after the events of Automata involving Yorha 10 trying to protect the server that humanity's data is contained in on the moon, defending it from the angels/machines. It also goes further into stuff like Red Eyes and fleshes out more of the Drakengard connections.

It's about as sequely you can get directly to Nier Automata while focusing on a new cast as Nier likes to do.

I think it'd be best exactly as it is but with levels removed. Chip fusing is cool, weapon and pod upgrading is cool, but the levels add absolutely nothing because almost everything scales anyways and in the places where it doesn't it means everything either melts like butter or has so much fucking HP that you have to slash at it for 15 minutes straight.

Either that or do it with fixed levels but then actually balance the XP curves and level difference impacts in such a way where it actually works and makes leveling up feel satisfying rather than pointless or actively bad because being overleveled trivializes the game.

There's a mod called WAX that adds an item a really short sidequest to get it (basically go to a place, go look at your email and go to the Resistance base and talk to the lady with the machine head on) that makes level scaling a lot better. Now enemies stay around your level at minimum so they aren't too easy.

I'd recommend it if you want the game to be better balanced. Keep in mind though the mod itself is a work in progress and it might affect enemy AI a little bit and some of their interactions with level geometry, but it doesn't do anything catastrophic or too unsightly. Sometimes the machines can get caught in the level geometry before they catch wind of you.

Everytime a Nier Automata thread is up I recommend this mod because it genuinely fixes the biggest issue with the game: the leveling system is genuinely fucked and ought to have been balanced better.

The particular one I remember it on is the quest to unlock the machine down in the valley in the forest zone who will do level 8 chip fuses for you. He wants you to clear out some enemies behind him and the main guy took forever.

It also happens with the golden machines but I think that might be by design? Because I was overleveled as fuck on my last run and the one in the flooded city coast was even worse.

But yeah, the WAX mod sets your level as a minimum level for the enemies to scale too. So it wouldn't work in the opposite direction so I don't think it would help in that case.

The silver lining is you can always drop the item if the enemies are too tough and re do the quest should you desire it.
