It was inbetween the Eggman Base fight and the Dynamo Cage rematch, so she just lost a battle and at her worst during that hallucination.
Her mental health got better after the Phantom Rider arc since they are "heroes" now.

It would have been much more anime if Lunar was female but Soleil was a guy and instead of any kind of agenda or representation, it was left at that. Like they just don't address or try to label it, Soleil considers herself a man but Lunar is a woman, it's so simple but people try to make everything into a problem that requires a resolution and maybe it does, but sometimes you can make a more fun story out of not solving or not being able to easily solve the problem.

God IDW is shit.
The metal virus arc was not well written, but it was interesting, everything that came after bar some of the Starline stuff was a waste of time.
This entire comic feels like fucking filler and there's nothing but fanfic level writing 90% of the time.
Starline's arc and death were one of the few interesting things in IDW, and now that's getting undone too.
Ian Flynn's writing is also just complete shit and relies on cheap references for everything.

Which is incredibly frustrating because Archie Eggman worked. In Archie's setting. But the game Eggman has always been a more versatile character, able to play sinister or buffoonish as the scene requires.

Doing away with Starline was a huge mistake. He was a villain who could zig where Eggman zagged, and had an excellent motivation in his complex to surpass Eggman. Him being clever enough to catch other's mistakes while being too arrogant to see his own also gave him a solid edge with a logical Achilles' heel. Having Eggman just crush him and leave him insignificant, dead or not, completely cut off all the narrative potential for absolutely no payoff.

Imo it's not a mistake because he was a good character, which he is, but because in hindsight there just wasn't anything compelling to replace him. Clutch should have been the boss of street level annoyances since he just doesn't have the makings of a varsity villain, Surge was engoodened, Mimic was like a manga that was being canceled and had to rush its ending, and Eggman hasn't been doing much lately.

I might not have the correct grasp on things, but here's how i see it: the games are the primary media and can affect the comics, but the comics are secondary media and can't do anything that might affect the games. Like, if the games brought back Tikal and made her a main cast member, the comics are beholden to intigrate her in some way, but the games wouldn't be beholden to do the same if the comics brought her back for an arc. That's still kind of a cop out. I think the problem is the writers set up these arcs that should have lasting effects but they can't so any real payoff you would expect or hope to see is just not there. You can write fun stories, even relatively big stories with cool climaxes, within a universe that has to stay the same. Episodic shows like most old mecha or other shonen stuff did it all the time, it's just the people at IDW don't know how to make that work because they're still mentally stuck in the Archie days and refuse to adapt. They should have just done classic since so far that's all they're good at.

Anyone familiar with the consumer component of comic distribution knows that audience letters were a pretty big part of comic culture. Back in the day, it was pretty common for comic artists to satirically feature complaint letters in the commentary tracks of their books. Yeah the problem is writing and not the setting but Sonic doesn’t exactly hire or entice good writers. Imagine Alan Moore’s Sonic the Hedgehog or Amazon’s Sonic the Hedgehog where Sonic gets his speed from injecting a super soldier heroin serum that also makes him rape Amy for fun. I don't see myself as a Sonic character nor have I any kind of fursona or whatever they call it now, but I still care about the characters in any story I'm watching/reading/playing. It's supposed to be human nature to care and connect with others, no matter if they're some fictional talking animal or a regular real life puppy desperately trying to get out of a river or something.
