there's no way it's worse than Command lol, and it's arguably better than Adventures and even Zero. it's really not that bad a game, it's very flawed but it had potential and pushed the series in the right direction. should have been delayed and released on the Wii so it could have more content and online multiplayer.

>Halo 2 launched the same year along with XBL
Gamecube was supposed to be the Gen Nintendo launched into multiplayer. A shame they fucked with execution on the one gimmick that mattered for consoles at the time

Star Fox 2 is entirely all range combat and runs on the same hardware. And then they went back to on-rails with ocassional all-range sections. Good design is timeless, games don't need to continue "evolving" over time just because they can. Sometimes evolution leads to a dead end.

I don't think all-range combat or on-foot combat is inherently a bad idea for Star Fox though, it just needed some refinement. Kid Icarus Uprising proved you can have a healthy balance of on-rails and all-range sections, I think something like that would work really well for Star Fox. You don't need to reinvent the wheel, Assault had the right idea it just wasn't implemented that well.

>Krystal was a cool addition to the team
Honestly she was lame and bland. Cute fox girl aside she doesn't offer anything fresh to the existing team dynamic. She has no moments of subtle character interactions where we get to learn more about her indirectly. To contrast the newest star fox game trailer showed a few minor touched about fox and falco's relationship like falco nudging foxs shoulder with fox smiling back and them playing a board game together before fox wins and falco looks frustrated. So Krystal might be cool addition but she was never portrayed as being such. Peppy also hangs around in assault and is basically unchanged in his role. He doesn't fly the arming but his presence and purpose is largely unchanged.

>Assault had the right idea it just wasn't implemented that well.
Star fox 2 was the title that had the right idea for me. On foot isn't a separate thing from flight gameplay but something that works in tandem since being able to change wherever there's a ground allows flexibility in how you would like to tackle a given situation during gameplay. Star fox 2 also prioritized making progress through a level to an endpoint for its ground sections while assault had you stuck in an arena expected to just shoot enemies and targets until the level ends.

It feels like they're really desperate to find ways to bring the upcoming game down and I think it's due to the switch 2 star fox likely going to succeed but being largely the antithesis of what assaultfags want. So far this game is looking like it will surpass assault in the main talking points you hear the fags say being story, multi-player, music. Star fox on switch 2 overall is looking like it is going to surpass all of assault's biggest strengths without doing what assaultfags want a new star fox game to do. Switch 2 star fox doing gangbusters will be a death nail in the idea that assault is assault is direction the series should take.

multiplayer is the best in the series and was originally gonna be multiplayer only, the rest of the game was slapped together and rushed out. i agree with >>738758858 sf had a huge chance and blew it. they also had a huge chance with the wii and blew it too. people say its the gimmicks but I think its the timing of the gimmicks.

If you legitimately believe this you're a fucking imbecile. Adventures, Command, and Zero were all substantially worse.

It's not the worst, that's Command. But its biggest crime was being a third-person shooter with absolutely dogshit controls and shooting. It was not fun in any way, shape, or form. Nintendo simply didn't know how to make a good TPS, and they only learned with Splatoon.

I'd be more comfortable moving Zero up if the gimmicks weren't forced, it's the one fucking thing holding back an otherwise good game.
2 is the definitely the weakest of those though, the game is over way too fast and the overly simplistic levels don't give it a lot of replay value.
Also, despite all the flaws, Assault's arwing missions are still fun and it had the best multiplayer in the series.

yeah that's fair. although I feel like it was the right move to have Fox actually on his feet for all-range combat, and not just a permutation of the Arwing. people will disagree with me I'm sure, but I think after Smash Bros cemented Fox as a gun-toting, fighting character, people wanted to see that in a game. you can say what you want, but Fox's image in culture has been hugely impacted in culture by Smash, there's no way around that. it just wasn't implemented well in Assault. like you said, the actual objectives were trash, a lot of tedious "kill x amount of enemies" missions. also the shitty missions where you stand on the wing of an Arwing. but actually being able to play Fox on foot was cool, it just took up too much of the game. the multiplayer was great, it was just hurt by not being online. some kind of combination of Starfox 2, Assault, and KI: Uprising and you'd have a great game imo.

The Team's split up for melodramatic reasons, and the events that happen within the campaign itself is pretty much just whatever happens in whatever level you happen to pick next with very little of it making any kind of cohesive narrative. Just about all the crazy shit anybody remembers it for are just the endings, while everything leading up to those endings is sort of "just there".

I mean sure, but the problem there is that it's hard to design levels that feel good in both an Arwing and on-foot. you could get in and out of an Arwing in Assault multiplayer and it was pretty cool but the levels felt very cramped for the Arwing, it's tough to balance that. maybe not impossible but idk. KI: Uprising has a good balance between on-rails and on-foot with basically every level being split between the two, and having fast paced on-foot objectives instead of the tedium of Assault. I feel like you could just do something like that.
