Price and weather aside, the downsides aren't that bad.

>yeah that would not get modeled
I wonder if they couldn't just spawn the relative assets for real within the mission but make them invisible to anything but the plane systems. At the end of the day in DCS what is the difference between showing a target on a FCR and it being actually in the sky, and it being only in the FCR itself?
I guess that would make it laggy maybe, considering you'd have stuff constantly spawing in when necessary. (instructor pilot or ground control can spawn various missions and threads unbeknownst to the trainee)

The difference is dev time vs perceived benefit.
It's the same thing with training bombs. The few of use that want them get met with the barrage of
>well it's a simulator, just use a real bomb instead

Certain 3rd party planes have option to enable persistence (i.e A2A and Black Square). It enables engine/airframe wear, chance of random failures happening and visible weathering (in case of A2A). Black Square had a bug, that this persistence hasn't been saved after flight so you had to use a workaround and restart the flight. Only then the state of the plane would be saved. It's a fun little feature wich I enjoy.

It seems like its niche is Spitfire vs Dora over the Channel with barely anything outside of it, and only if you squint very hard.

Yak-9T big boolet edition
>>
I ended up buying the Soviet bundle with the La-5s, Yaks, Li-2 etc. Haven't actually flown much Russian stuff outside of the IL-2, in my 350 hours in this game. I think I'll sell some tf2 shit and pick up the regular C-47 as well. Transport flying is always comfy
>>
>>
>>565859503
Ta 152 is just a slower D9 with lower roll rate. The altitude advantage is negligible in vanilla career since fights rarely take place in altitudes where it would matter. It looks freaky tho and has great armament.
Can't speak to the IARs since I haven't bought them yet but I might.
Skip the glider since transport missions are just boring in IL-2
La-5F is a good plane but doesn't really bring anything different compared to the other La-5.
Li-2 see above.
Can't speak to FC content.
Teardrop Spit is a complete waste of money, literally the same as the non teardrop version and you only get like an afternoon of flying in career.
Ar 234 is great imo. Don't forget opening the camera cover on intel missions kek.
C-47 see Li-2
Yak-9s are good with a nasty cannon that's fun to snipe with.
U-2VS if you're a tranny, lets you fly as a women.
La-5FN see above.
G6, its a 109..very capable in its career timeframe though.
Yak-1b is fine but nothing special.
MC 202 is pretty interesting imo, gorgeous plane but it's guns take some getting used to. Very similar flight characteristics to the 109s of its theater.
La-5 see above.

The clouds in msfs 20/24 are too blobby imo, they need more definition.
>>
>>565907540
The problem is that they are massive resources sinks with an early peak in terms of cost/benefits. It's sad that no simulator has even gotten remotely close to capturing just how sharp and defined clouds can be even when you're a few meters from them.

They're not.
You can look this up on the official forums. The engine is incapable of modeling that. It's one of the reasons why Jason (of 777) studios left the company

There's a flight sim called "Rise of Flight" maybe you've heard of it? Anyways, it's a WW1 sim, and since it was a WW1 sim primary single engine based, it didn't model separate fuel tanks. The new version of IL-2 based off the same engine, doesn't either.
Have a nice day

Nu-IL2 does have physical modeled fuel tanks, they're just modeled as two big blobs along the centerline and don't correspond to any real aircraft at all. Korea should fix that.
The new warbird damage model in DCS is pretty good, too.

>All systems just run on a timer as soon as the mission starts
This is what i dislike with Il-2. Everything is arcadey and made up. And yet its still the only game that will provide an adequate WW2 experience.
>>
>>
>>565958103
Have you ever played IL-2 BoX? I don't understand how you could play it for more than 5h and not notice that. How come if you stream fuel from your right wing, the gauge for that tank drops faster than the others?
Is this some weird semantics game you're playing?
>>
>>
>>
>>565970791
Il2 (new) doesn't model separate fuel tanks, it can only model a fixed internal fuel amount that's set on a timer. This is why drop tanks have not been in the game for the past 13 years. They are not capable of being modeled in the current engine. You're more than welcome to visit the official IL2 forum instead of posting here to gain further knowledge and history of the games engine development and limitations.

All of the autists who were old enough to fly real WW2 planes (or to have dads who did) peaked in their technical competence in the late-90s / early-00s and then either died or ended up in a retirement home.
The conflict has passed out of living memory, a majority of potential reference airframes have crumbled into dust, and, barring some new pop-culture phenomenon, mainstream interest in the era is effectively dead.

If it stays purely as a trainer then it's not that useful, trainers nowadays need to teach SA and SYS management more than flying, and flying supersonic is not something that has to be taught. Aside from the fact that it uses the F-18 engine so you already have part commonality and economy of scale there are no real benefits.
If you're already aiming for an armed variant of your trainer for future sales pitches then it's a different story and it can really help, especially with poorer nations that can't afford both an advanced trainer and a real fighter.
IMHO in the future armed trainers are going to play a key role in anti drone operations when paired with APWKSII etc, due to their lower operational costs compared to frontline fighters, so it becomes a difference in philosophy between wanting a supersonic afterburning trainer for faster intercepts, or the safety from redundancy with 2 engines in the case of the M-346.

I am currently larping as Snowman in ATS.
Kenworth W900, Trailer with specific paintjob, etc., however, what is missing is the sleeper cabin.
Now the problem is that the Smokey and the Bandit trucks was a short-framed one, and you can't get a short frame with a cabin in the vanilla game.
My workshop-fu is really weak, and now matter how hard I look I can't find a short-frame sleeper cabin W900.

Still having some issues getting my full STECS throttle working with it.
I can use the main bit just fine, but the extra buttons on the STEM module don't register, from what I assume is a button limit in the game itself. (The slider works weirdly enough) Haven't had any luck with vjoy and joystick gremlin.
The only other idea I can think of might be to create another vjoy device and bind all the STEM buttons to that one, but I'm already at the 4 device limit (stick, throttle, pedals, and throttle quadrant) so I don't know if it will actually work

I thought it might be, but apparently the Ju-87 dive recovery system is supposed to auto turn on the siren, then turn it off as a way to signal when to drop the bomb. That doesn't seem to be happening for me.
>>
>>
>>566180875
I think there is some confusion here.
There are two sirens. The B has a siren (noisemaker) that is turned on when you extend the dive brakes.
That one also has an automatic bomb release as per the contact altimeter setting.
The D variant has no diving siren, but a signal siren that tells you when your desired release height is reached, and then you have to release manually.
However, in BAT, the bomb release siren never stops for me. Which IL-2 are you playing, anyway?

There are maybe half a dozen specific drills to work through to help with coordination, but IMO the most helpful is just keeping your nose fixed on the ATC tower and doing left/right orbits around it without losing any altitude. Keep going until you can do it around a flagpole without thinking too hard.

Will try. I can see myself enjoying the challenge, there is something very satisfying when you manage to fly those god-forsaken creations the way you want.
>>566190216
For now the most important things I found are :
- be gentle on the commands. Since you always need to react better go slower. Except for liftoff where if you take too long to raise the collective you risk to slide or spin because of point ground contact.
- When things are getting out of hand just let the cyclic go and let the machine stabilize for itself.
- if you use some rudder input you may want to lower the sensibility.
- When coming down ALWAYS keep vertical speed in check. If you're above -500fpm you're going to have a hard time managing the power up/power down changes as you get closer to the ground.
- When you get closer to the ground the copter will shake and go down and you need to give a solid cyclic pull, and the opposite will happen when you get into ground effect.
-This video around the 3:30 marks gives a very good visual explanation of the complex input balance needed to keep your ride in check : https://youtu.be/4R9e7rrB7Ko
And I don't have much experience so if anyone knows better please correct me.
>>
>>566242553
When I was learning to fly helicopters in DCS I've found that staying patient and not overcorrecting was the key for me. This and watching out for VRS and retreating blade stall. I would often practice via taking the copter up on the runway and taxi hover around the taxi ways.

Yeah, T16000M is not ideal for helis. Doing it with paddles on the throttle is better than twisting the stick, but still not ideal. When I've bought rudder pedals it became easy then. Don't buy cheap pedals from thrustmaster though, they are a nightmare.

When I have the money I'll probably get vkb stick + throttle and maybe winwing pedals...when I have the money.
>>
>>566259716
WHen I've flown with thrustmaster, the heavy helis like Hind and MI-17 were pretty easy to handle with paddles. However, the twitchy, small OH-6 was a pain in the ass. When I've bought the small VKB pedals it was a world changing experience though. Good luck with your learning, helis are so much fun. I'm waiting for MI-2 now.

practice vuichard recoveries, VRS is simulated as a trigger condition in most sims so you can get out of it at pretty unrealistic altitudes if you're quick enough to react

Yeah, the shake is a warning sign that your rotor is starting to ingest its own downwash. Don't let it do that.
The collective isn't really a thrust control, it's a lift control. You can't make more lift if your airfoil is stuck in the middle of a low-pressure vortex no matter how hard you pull on the lever, so you need to move it out of that zone and into stable air it can push against.
VRS is basically a stall across the whole rotor disc, aka your "wing", and you get out of it in almost the same way as any other stall.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW8gCfBcIW0
>>
>>566269515
2024 supposedly has VRS in it but it seems relatively tame from the last time I tried to force it. You get it from low forward airspeed and you're descending don't you? Where you fall through your own vortex?

Maybe the two drive through ordering kiosks were a clue? I think it's only a semiautomatic process where they use AI to outline the shape of the building, and then someone actually goes in and tags it with building type at some point.

You have to be much more intentional with your screenshotting in DCS, it's a lot easier to pause a GA flight in MSFS than to pause mid-action in a combat sim.
Taking photos in training sessions is disruptive to learning, pausing for a photoshoot will ruin any immersion you get from a campaign, and watching replays to printscreen your highlights is a cumbersome timesink. Forget about screenshots in any type of MP scenario.
Complaining is much easier.

If you're flying high-altitude jets IFR, batc may be enough
But otherwise, sayintentions is the best ATC addon at the moment, just expensive
It's the only one with full VFR support with traffic injection for other VFR traffic
It's the only one that can handle unusual callsign abbreviation situations like foreign registrations, because you just specify the abbreviation manually (also works if you want a vanity callsign for your flight sim Youtube channel that's going to hit 1000 subs any day now for sure really)
Unlike batc, it gives you altimeter information on center handoffs when cruising below transition altitude (and tells you which airport that information came from)
It can accommodate single-radio operations where you have to ask to leave the frequency to get ATIS and then come back
It supports emergencies and diversions (although you can kinda do diversions in BATC by filing a new simbrief flightplan to the diversion airport and then restart BATC in the air)
It lets you choose between strict readback enforcement (BATC-style) or loose readback enforcement (FShud-style) (for if you've got a shit microphone or noisy environment and ATC keeps asking you to redo your readback)
There's a rough simulation of the American PDC system. (Not talking about airliner CPDLC, even BATC has that -- I mean the PDC system that small planes use)
Some other more minor things like the ability to request taxi to a different location within the same airport e.g. taxi from parking to fuel box.
It's the little things that keep me on SI despite the cost. (Not bothering to talk about fluff like tourguides and shit)
BATC may catch up eventually but for now I'm still paying the SA tax
>>
>>566647289
There's some other misc stuff that some people might appreciate, though I don't use these myself:
・Can ask ground control to light your taxipath like can be done at some real airports (although it's just spawning light-shaped simobjects along the ground in place of the traditional blue simulator arrows, not controlling actual airport scenery lights.)
・Has a basic RAAS system for runway alerts so you can larp you're running foreflight on the ipad in your Piper Cub (I already bought LAND3's vRAAS before SA added that)
・Has some kind of poor-man's GSX-like features for stuff like calling fuel trucks and other ground services, but eh I already have GSX
・A voice checklist system that includes the ability to have a simulated co-pilot press switches for you i.e. change sim variables (I already made my own version of this with VoiceAttack so never used SA's)
・various airliner roleplay stuff like cabin announcements and "cabin crisis" like sick passengers
・SkyOps search & rescue missions (I might actually try this sometime just to see what's unique about it, but there's free addons that can give you basically the same thing, like Neofly, not to mention FS2024's career mode)
>>
>>
Oh yeah, there's also multiplayer stuff in SA
There's a setting you can enable that lets other users hear your radio calls
Separate from that you set whether you want to hear other human pilots (which you can use even if don't allow anyone to hear you)
You can set it to hear people who are on the same frequency and in range of you right now, but also can turn on historical recordings to add more chatter if you want, e.g. a guy who was flying at that same airport the week before
(There's an option to hear radio calls from anywhere in the world but I found that a bit goofy)
There's a traffic injection option for other human pilots which as far as I know does the same thing other cross-sim multiplayer addons like VATSIM do, so you can see SA users even if they're on a different MSFS version or different MSFS multiplayer server (and maybe if they're in Xplane? SA doesn't do traffic injection in Xplane itself though)
Oh speaking of VATSIM, SA has (semi-?)automated handoff between SA controllers and VATSIM controllers (both ways). You can accomplish that manually in any ATC addon that lets you resume midflight so not a huge deal, but still neat you can change to the vatsim unicom frequency when a vatsim controller tells you to and announce on frequency and an SA controller will pick you up.

add PocketSky to that list
https://www.sayintentions.ai/pocketsky
it's another thing you can mostly accomplish other ways, but if you don't already have something like it and are using SI anyway, might as well use SI's version
(Some parts of PS are specific to SI, like talking to ATC through your phone or changing gate assignments. But the only thing I've ever used it for is to check how long I am from top-of-descent when I leave the sim running to eat lunch)

fshud sucks donkey dicks, barely better than default. waste of money.
vatsim is obviously the best, but coverage is always spotty outside of special events.

>>566647289
>>566648262
SI seems by far the most fully featured of the addons, it's just costly.
I already am only using fs through gay pass so the sub doesn't bother me. in fact I'm weary of actually buying any of this cloud bullshit because they might turn it off any time. at least the sub is honest about what you get.
>>
>>566657997
atc without traffic is just masturbatory, the only reason atc exists in the first place is to avoid conflicts between multiple aircraft. you're missing so much without having to worry about what other aircraft are doing. may as well just free fly without ATC then.

Boomers are actually worse for sim drama. They're either retired and reasonably wealthy fulltime NEET gamers (somehow still suck after 2k+ hours), people who "akshually did this for a living you know" and won't shut up about it, or they're running the studios themselves, all from a generation whose main form of entertainment was stirring up the social shit-pot.

But in the end they all want their flaps at 8, if you can't set it to that holy 8 of their, they'll fly another plane behind your back just to set their sights on a 8 flaps haver.
They all talk about among themselves in their own channel, I've heard it all, over and over again.
And if you're unlucky, I mean really unlucky, they might toe back a little bastard air model of that plane she's flying.
