>>566688856
Nah man, I've watched a handful of accident report videos and if I ever step into a cockpit, I'm gonna be the star of one of those. I don't have the patience or diligence to fly unfortunately. Hell I get overwhelmed and lose my bearings all the time in Ace Combat even when I'm in 3rd person view.

>>566686430
>>566688839
the Musashi story is very funny because many people read it surface level as "he's such a good swordsman he can beat a guy who has a real sword using an oar"
when it's actually more like "Musashi intentionally shows up late to psych out his opponent and throw him off his game, blinds Kojiro with the sunlight, and then brutally beats him to death with a blunt object" (and iirc Kojiro's combat style was basically just "use your insanely long sword to keep distance and either slowly chip away at your opponent and win through attrition or disembowel him and keep away until he bleeds out", not very honorable either)
because a wildly famous swordsman in that time period being undefeated doesn't mean he's good, it just means he only takes fights he knows he can win (by hook or by crook) and cowards out from fights he can't; Musashi's reputation as a peerless swordsman is somewhat of a modern creation afaik, up until the late 19th/early 20th century he was primarily respected as a philosopher and strategist for that very reasonyes this means that fgo's big titty bisexual drunkard murderhobo female musashi is actually rather accurate

Actually speaking of the Iran war, for some reason recently a Hornet strafed a cargo vessel attempting to run Schrodinger's Blockade. Apparently hit the rudder? I wonder what kind of circumstances have to come for the Navy to decide that strafing a boat with a fighter plane like it's World War 2 again is a good idea. I guess there weren't any destroyers in the area. That's been the most interesting plane related thing to come out of that war recently though, I just thought it was funny more than anything.
>>566791023

America ruled the world uncontested for about 15 years after the Soviet Union clickclacked itself and then 2008 ended that in one fell swoop. If I ever get a time machine I'm going back in time to strangle every single fucking neocon and neolib shitheel as I can get my hands on before the feds kill me. I'd rather go back to 1945 and force the US to counterinvade the Soviet Union and implement Total Communist Death but the former seems more achievable. Funny that I only realized that I'm a jingoistic, imperialist lunatic after seeing America do everything in its power to piss away an empire. You really don't know what ya go 'til it's gone, buddy.
Anyways planes! I like planes. Planes are cool. I need 8 to come out soon so I can have something to distract myself from the absolute fucking state of the world. Last thing I need is to make this place a dumping ground for my all of my doomposting.

I'm really curious how they're going to handle the F-4 in 8. Do you think we'll finally get an actual carrier variant of it or do you think they'll just reuse the weird hybrid F-4E? Personally I just hope it has a better special weapon loadout this time. Like at least give it SAAMs.
>>
>>566800582
i think you are forgetting a very big event in 2001 and a better use of a time machine would be to curb stomp marx in 1818, thereby preventing the entirety of the communist virus from ever being thought of, if that isnt achievable, preventing the sinking of the titantic would probably stop the great depression since it carried opponents to the creation of the federal reserve when it was sunk by an ice(((berg)))
>>

A weird thought that I had which I think is accurate: the Raptor is the largest combat vehicle in the world that is operated entirely by a single crew member. I kind of expected that to be the case for aircraft, but it occurred to me that all the larger land and sea vehicles I can think of are all intended to operate with multiple crew.
>>
>>566815182
Wouldn't the one-seater Flanker also qualify since it's a single-crew aircraft but longer and with a wider wingspan?
I'd imagine there are other single-seaters somewhere in history that were probably larger to serve some kind of role outside of air superiority.
>>
File: X-59-overview_four-view.png (587.0 KB)
>>566815182
>>566815570
I mean if you want some real long plens you get into weird prototype things like the X-59. The U-2 is also pretty long. Plus with Flankers, the SU-33 has a wider wingspan than the non-carrier variants.
>>
>>566815570
Oh good call, I always forgot how fucking huge those are. And if you broaden it outside of combat roles, I agree with >>566815902, it'd probably be the U-2.
Thinking about it does make me think of a different stat now though, aircraft cost per crew member, and maybe I find that even more interesting to think about. The B-2 probably beats it out, but it's split across two crew. The Raptor, meanwhile, that's basically a 200 million dollar incremental cost you're entrusting to a single a human being, which is kind of wild in that frame.

It's a test bed trying to reduce how loud a sonic boom and potentially be a step towards lifting the ban on overland supersonic transport. It also has an EVS system with cameras to let the pilot see through the nose to compensate for the lacking cockpit visibility. Also funny part is that the actual cockpit is taken from a T-38 and the landing gear from an F-16.
>>
>>
>>566817243
>Also funny part is that the actual cockpit is taken from a T-38 and the landing gear from an F-16.
even funnier thing is that this was meant to reduce costs but resulted in technical issues that lead to program delays because an F-16 landing gear has all sorts of sensors in it that dont play nice with things not F-16 shaped
>>
>>566817035
>>566817243
ok, thats interesting and cool but whats the use case for supersonic commercial flight? what needs to be transported that fast? its not people otherwise concorde would still be around
>>
>>
>>566817746
>concorde would still be around
Concorde died because of the trifecta of 9/11, a single high-profile accident and general bans from overland flights because of the aformentioned gigaloud sonic booms.
Wealthy people were more than willing to pay for mid-air luxury service while halving their air commute times.
>>
>>566817746
What >>566818078 said, but I'll add in some context, because it's not like a little quieter than a Concorde, their projection is that even at mach 1.4 it'd be 16 times quieter than a Concorde, about as loud as closing a car door.
>>
>>
>>
>>566818078
No, Concorde died because it was hellaciously expensive. Of the two airlines to operate it, only one ever made a profit, and it was heavily subsidized by the British government.
Boom is retarded, and every time they try and make themselves unretarded, they just dig a deeper hole.
>>
>>
>>566828257
>hellaciously expensive
Because they were limited to transoceanic flight routes while ticket sales dropped due to 9/11 in general and Air France 4590 in particular.
>only one ever made a profit
Because they sold it to wealthy people who were willing to pay a premium for considerably shorter luxury flights.

i don't agree with either of those, although my thoughts on 4 being the easiest to pick up and play are muddied by the fact that i recently played all 3 in a row starting with 4 and ending with zero so i'm not sure if i just got used to the controls or if the controls in the later games were just easier to play with
i'm also not sure about zero having the most replayability mostly due to the fact that 5 has like 10 missions more and a larger variety of gameplay within the missions; i guess zero is more of a completionist's game

You have almost 5 seconds after Nagase says fire to destroy the radar. Its easy to learn the timing to the point you can do it with your brain off. As gimmick missions go its not that bad. Its not even the worst gimmick mission in 5. Let alone reaching the level of Time Limit

I would only want this if it gives us the MiG-28, because frankly I'm not sure the F-5 would ever show up again otherwise. I really hope the fact that the Endurance is an older carrier and having the A-6 back means we get more boomer planes this time around.
>>
>>
>>566857128
>>566861262
all 3 games are great, yeah, but there's obviously elements within each game that are better than the others and that's why people have a favourite
as far as i can understand/see, 5 is just the overall best package, even if it has some tedious missions, the good stuff about it overwhelms those
>>
>>566893141
5, despite having the most missions, with many of these being duds, has the worst pacing of the three. The story is cheesy with the most hamfisted themes in the entire series, and no matter how much people hide its flaws behind cheesy 00s anime nostalgia there is a moment where the characters really should just shut the fuck up. It also has the worst final mission of the three. I still love it and some days if you ask me, I could still say its my favorite. But for me, its nowhere close to a best overall package type of deal.
>>
>>
The best thing 5 did was have a very fun meme plane. More Ace Combat games should have very fun meme planes, it'd be hilarious to have both an F-5 and a MiG-28 with cranked up stats.
>>
>>
>>566894431
>with many of these being duds
a few of them can be written off, i agree, but there's still more good missions in 5 than in either 4 or zero
>has the worst pacing of the three
i kind of agree but is that really a major dealbreaker? maybe i need to replay it to "get it" because i've heard that a lot of the plot points are nonsensical when you actually apply logic to it which i guess i missed out on due to focusing mostly (but not entirely) on the missions but looking back on it, it's hard for me to say how much better the game would be if the pacing were perfect, even. i guess i haven't fully formed my thoughts on that part yet
>The story is cheesy with the most hamfisted themes in the entire series, and no matter how much people hide its flaws behind cheesy 00s anime nostalgia
this is another thing i don't really understand - it's a bit melodramatic and some themes are exaggerated but why exactly is that a negative? i don't understand but maybe i'm just biased towards emotionality
>It also has the worst final mission of the three
true but the song that plays during the SOLG shootdown is better than 4's and dare i say even rivals zero's
>I still love it and some days if you ask me, I could still say its my favorite
if you don't think it's the best overall package then why is it your favourite on those days?
>>

>Now show me a webm of how that plane handles.
It's a combination of three mods. One that gives the F-16 better stats than the PW Mk-1 and access to all weapons, one that gives it a McDonald's skin, and the Prez mod that also gives her a seat in single seaters. At least I think it was that Prez mod, been a couple years and getting all the mods to play together was janky but it resulted in the most fun Merc playthrough I ever had for that game.
>>
>>566898331
>if you don't think it's the best overall package then why is it your favourite on those days?
Because, as you said, each game has elements that are better than the others, and in some days, these elements get the best out of me.
I love 04's presentation, flight model, overall mission design, and soundtrack which despite not having Unsung War or Zero, is way more memorable for me through every mission in the series
I love 5's plane variants and high moments that I will sadly never experience them again for the first time
I love Zero's ace mechanics and its attempt at telling a grittier story while still retaining AC's feeling at its core

I feel like we're getting more news about 8 than we did about 7 in the same timeframe since 7's announcement. The co-op multiplayer tags and the fact that Zero was found in the Steam files are individually both a bigger reveal than anything we got in the first year from 7's announcement, if I remember correctly. This all makes me optimistic that 8's on a good track.
Also friendly reminder that every time someone asks when it's going to come out, its launch date gets pushed back a day.

Well if we have any buddies oligarch money lying around, now you have the perfect opportunity to buy your very own Spirit Airlines Airbus 320.

Something rather sad about seeing a bunch of perfectly functional planes lined up to be mostly sold for scrap. Hopefully most of them get sold on to fly with other airlines instead of being cannibalized.
>>566932775
The recomp for whatever reason has a bug where the smoke trails don't show up. Not unplayable of course, but it made me realize how useful they smoke trails are for situational awareness. Sometimes it's very hard to noticd you've even launched a missile without them.

I was under the impression they already had some form of drop tank for their F-35s after last years airstrikes in Iran. But it seems like there's conflicting reports, some are saying the F-35s were bingo fuel when they landed and a couple Israeli officials implied they had used drop tanks. Maybe they were in combat testing during those operations and the contract now is just making their adoption official? I hope it's not CFTs, I don't mind them inherently but they would not look good on the F-35. That'd really make her live up to that Fat Amy nickname.
>>
>>566985795
CFT would screw with her stealth so it can't be those. THat is one good thing about stealth if you mess with the design you mess with its stealth

>THat is one good thing about stealth if you mess with the design you mess with its stealth
It's a reason why I figured the universal external pod idea had merit since the pod has a constant drag and stealth profile it doesn't matter you decide to put in because it's pretty much a bolted on external weapon bay. Kinda felt like it would be a natural thing to add to the F-35 to more ammo capacity when it's running full stealth config
>>
>>
>>567004608
LockMart had already been experimenting with the idea in 2019 according to the article anon posted. Although those were just droptanks. Actually speaking of the external weapon bays some planes in 7 have, are those real?

>Actually speaking of the external weapon bays some planes in 7 have, are those real?
the ones on the F-14D and Raptor are inspired by the conceptual external weapons bay for the Advanced Super Hornet circa 2010 (which was later added in 1:1 with the release of the latter's addition via DLC)
