>>566748724 eh, just enough of a success to keep going on the trend-chasing, slop treadmill. no thanks. they lucked into some appeal (by ripping off Execute) and very mildly capitalized on it, especially when you consider it is split between 2-3 people. I doubt their next venture will be as fruitful (just ask Branno!)
>>566749278 If you managed to make it to 24 without having acquired any gamedev adjacent skill like art or programming to a reasonable level, then yeah, it's over for you.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a game I loathe. I despise it. It is the definition of shovelware. Of slop. So many of the levels are basic modifications of old levels, such as: >The same level as before but you now have 30 seconds instead of 60 >The same level as before but one hit and you're dead >The same level as before but enemies moves twice as quickly Yet this game got crazy scores. Some people even call it the best game on the Wii. A game that has maybe 33% the amount of original content as its predecessor. If I followed in its footsteps and farted out levels by the dozens, making small modifications such as time limits and enemy counts, I could quadruple the content of my game with minimal effort.
>>566749643 this is a sunshine board the best mario game all other marios are fake and gay galaxy is some baby gay shit about baby stars and sunshine is about making bitches WET now run along little boy before i chuck you
Be honest, most people don't go to itch.io or steam to randomly search for random indies to install (your game).
So what advantage does steam and itch.io and DLSite provide over having your own website and then doing your own social media marketing as funnels for your own website?
>>566750501 Most people who have money to spend on video game do go to those sites to search for games to buy. You're broke and brown and don't play any video games, retard.
>>566751841 if your goal is money than yes the Apple store has both a higher concentration of whales AND half the store cut of steam, it's a no brainer.
>>566749278 If you wanna start dev to be the next stardew valley million sales success, it's better for you to move on. If you wanna fuck around and make stuff because you like video games you could try it, most engines are free with tons of resources for you to learn. If you wanna try it as a side hustle I won't suggest it, because your first release will be years from when you start. if you don't give up midway. If you wanna start and become a professional to be hired into the industry, I totally suggest you to reconsider. The industry it's imploding right now Above all, consider that dev is incredibly hard, it has tons of sides of it you won't like that need to be done; first of them it's coding. If you think you can dev without learning how to code a little you are delusional.

4chan is different. Merely engaging with a post bumps it. This is why rage-baiting and sliding are so effective here.
Though counterintuitive, the most effective course of action to deal with content you don't like is to simply not engage with it. You've already identified it as something not worth your continued engagement. Perhaps acknowledge this to yourself and simply move on with your life, understanding that the slop has no bearing on your success, and that it is a choice to engage (and thus promote) it.
>>566764746 Abandoned it, really dumb idea. Too many characters means the AI has to be dumbed down to keep the speed up. I tried a simultaneous action thing and it was okay but there was lag going on. Honestly I'd be better off making a real time system like League tft if I want that many enemies.
So ill keep it down to roughly six-ten enemies/allies max.
Its put a real hole in my summoner class plans though.
I think after this if this version does not get much attention, ill probably do one more tactics game attempt then look for another genre.
>>566778231 >Too many characters means the AI has to be dumbed down to keep the speed up. How were you implementing the AI?
I was using GOAP with A* pathfinding on all my AI entities for a while, and it didn't scale well. I switched over to a completely Utility based AI using a shared Dijkstra heatmap and now things are extremely fast.
Might be something worth considering depending on what the behavior is that you need.
>>566778403 I don't use AI as coding never got in my way. Isn't it funny that AI users uses specs because they make the model more effective? Perhaps we'll discover that some kind of formal language spec with dedicated keywords is the most effective. wouldn't that be wild?
>>566778804 the problem I was running into with A* is that each entity has to find it's own path to it's target. so it's a point-to-point with overhead scaling per entity.
By using a dijkstra "heatmap" emitted by a target, all entities can read this common heatmap and decide how to move. Since many entities are sharing a common context, this approach is ideal for "swarm" behavior. Depending on how you implement things, these heatmaps can have a concept of terrain/danger/cost. They're useful for steering contexts as well. You can overlap as well for things like "move here but avoid the lava" type situations. Here's a nice old article about them from the guy that made Brogue:
some work on damage effects, prob gonna add some particles with collision for armor pieces flaking off. Was initially planning to use pom decals but stencil cutouts ended up working out nicer.
>>566776895 >>566777085 This is what took me so long. Please don't laugh. >recorded a bunch of fluid sims >rendered them out to .jpgs >turned them into sprite sheets >made a flipbook shader to play through the sprite sheets >made randomizing logic to randomly give every splash a different sprite sheet and offset >made quad billboards to act as the splashes >made the water shader When I started solo dev three years ago I coulda done this in two days but I'm so fucking old and slow now. nervous system regulation seems a better concept to me than "happiness" or "fun". people will flock to whatever helps them regulate their nervous system. if you think about it like that, then there's no more need to care about what "fun" means. you just need to understand what problems people have and how your product can help with that psychological problem. simple example: anger -> shooters
>>566788326 You can always mix and match depending on the context. More than one heatmap can be applied, and they can be summed. I still use A* for things like drawing paths on the screen and what not. Once your utility AI has more considerations than just interest/danger it'll really start to show up in behavior

>>566805252 >boomer shooter about killing demons and gods and a brother and sister fucking each other dirty at the end of the world >gay Sure thing, homobro
>>566805975 Yeah :/ AI can do simple code well enough. And a lot of simple games succeed nowadays. But for art, it is simply too inconsistent on the long term. I can cheat on coding by having AI do the thinking and then I just write the code however I please but with a general flow to follow. Just avoid code complex games and it's easy enough. I can't do the same with art, I have to actually learn that and it's not easy.
>>566806225 I cant give a proper answer since i've stopped and started a million times because at the time I thought "the code is more important", "I just need to be a solid programmer".
Its all bullshit. I know how to code. I'm as good as i'll ever be. I'm going to stop procrastinating now and go back to doing art everyday from now on.
>>566806875 you basically have to be a youtuber/'tokker to be successful as an itch dev. That's why you see all these hacks and women trying to start their game dev flavored channel so they can make shit but already have an audience to buy it because of parasocial retardation
I would say only just now are LLMs good enough to code actual games people want to play. Mark this in the history books, right now. They're finally getting me where I need to go. GPT 5.5 High via Codex CLI is my choice right now, it's better than Claude.
>>566807552 Also guys don't get memed into using DeepSeek v4 Pro Thinking. The benchmarks are a lie. It feels only 60% as smart as GPT 5.5 and is literally 10x slower.
I thought China would be destroying Western AIs by now but somehow they're not.
>>566806463 I can tell you, but you have to promise not to laugh:
The headlights on the car use a spotlight. In godot docs, they recommend using an attenuation value of 2.0 for "physically accurate" lights. This is a trap, don't do it on spotlights. It made the lights super dim so I extended the headlights ten times longer to compensate. (pls don't laugh) I undid this because it was ass on performance and looked like shit. It took me a bit of fiddling to get the same effect with much better performance.
Aside from that, I just disabled sun shadows at night lol. Together that's like 20 FPS.
I can gain more by splitting up my big forest gridmaps into smaller ones.
>>566807454 still fine, the bars just been raised a bit over the years, so you can't just make a 2010s pixel platformer and cross your fingers like ye olden times. But people very much still want good games.
>>566808410 moles. nobody ever put big fat moles on their animu before. what a revelation. and lucky that figure skater with moles was popular at the same time. rising tides.
>>566808575 you can post the girl or a scene and people will recognize them. The dev was very methodical with the girl especially. People (/v/) bitch about female protags, but it's a very easy cheat-code to sell a game if she's attractive/sexy and you do a little shilling.
>>566808410 male dev was tranny baiting his male audience calling them big boys/good boy every video on his youtube. zoomlets/millelinials are so starved for anything that they will go for it. genius marketing desu
>>566808410 just tranny bait your male audience. release anime girl. call your male audience big boy good boy. just act like an e whore. you'll sell your game. its the meta moving forward as incel rate of males between 18 to 28 approach 90%.
>>566808694 /v/ doesn't buy (or even play) games so their opinion doesn't matter Even if every game had a male protag they would then complain that it's all manly men, and if they weren't they would complain about how they're all fags.
>>566752880 A diablo like system, personally, is best for CRPGs. DOS2 inventory was so shit Let the player manage their inventories, not pick everything up
>>566808882 This doesn't really have to do with incel rates. Sex has been selling things since time immemorial, virgin or not Just having anything remotely sexy or provocative in a thumbnail/title will boost clicks If you're really in it for money you better study and learn some advertising
>>566809227 In highschool business class there was a project to make flyers and post them around the school. The best performing one was just the word SEX in big text followed by "now that I have your attention".
>>566805975 This is such artfag cope. The problem is artfags deny the existence of the asset store, which was the art equivalent to AI code that has existed for over a decade, and they pretend using premade assets is somehow immoral or will turn off gamers. >Buh muh soul Lmao Synty games make bank every week. Just use premade assets ffs.
>>566809498 would probably sell well. just add a covered in black engine grease/oil skin with no clothes with her privates covered by the black oil. then make a youtube video title it "Big boy covered me in black oil'
>>566809652 Yeah its never been easier to make games and not be an artist. Indie game communities are echo chambers filled with artists. Simulator games made using metahumans and quixel assets are almost always in the steam top sellers.
>>566809652 Synty still wont cure your lack of an art direction. Synty makes the most bank from devs who think buying a million packs without knowing how to use them will solve their art problem.
>>566809498 >initial d car >heavy rain paper cranes? honestly looks pretty kino if someone made this into a game. like that one indie anime racing game someones making but darker but of course you've got to make the entire game, there's the catch
>>566810030 Yep. You never see those guys circle jerking in places like this trying to get good boy points by showing that they worked really really hard on a tree someone will spend two seconds looking at, they just crank out games.
>>566810403 And to add to my own post the only people who care if you use asset packs - won't buy your game anyway - because the only people who care are other developers. Telling people not to use asset packs is the game dev equivalent of a woman telling another woman she should cut her hair short.
daily reminder that cuphead uses a shitty film grain store asset from one of those 100 camera effects packs and its not as hand made as the marketing says it is
Proggy. Got a lot of the audio implemented. Enemies still lack some sounds and I also want to add some for the transitions and the upgrade screen. Music is placeholder.
>>566752120 i can temper my expectations, i'm not wanting to be the next notch, but when i play my favorite games i can't help but think, "i want to make something cool like this, too." being a professional would be great, or even creating my own studio, but i recognize those as completely unrealistic. i'm not banking on changing careers or something. my biggest concerns is that i have zero dev skills or talents. i did make pong when i was in middle school but i obviously don't remember shit. i'd be starting a decade after everyone else, i don't know if it's worth it or not. but i do get the strong urge to create something. thank you for the reply by the way.
>>566814694 >i'd be starting a decade after everyone else what are you blabbering about gaylord make game or dont someone could have learned to program on a c64 and still made 0$ compared to some zoom zoom who slapped together something in rpgmaker having zero dev skills and talent didnt stop the devs of mixtape
>YOUR GAME MUST HAVE ACHIEVEMENTS AND TRADING CARDS OR ELSE I WILL COMPLAIN AND LEAVE NEGATIVE REVIEWS >YOUR GAME MUST BE CHEAPER THAN $10 OR ELSE I WILL COMPLAIN AND LEAVE NEGATIVE REVIEWS >YOUR GAME MUST ALWAYS BE ON SALE FOR 75% OFF OR MORE OR ELSE I WILL COMPLAIN AND LEAVE NEGATIVE REVIEWS >YOU SHOULD NEVER RAISE THE PRICE OF YOUR GAME TO ADJUST FOR INFLATION OR ELSE I WILL COMPLAIN AND LEAVE NEGATIVE REVIEWS >YOU SHOULD UPDATE AND ADD NEW CONTENT TO YOUR $5 GAME UNTIL THE END OF TIMES OR ELSE I WILL COMPLAIN AND LEAVE NEGATIVE REVIEWS >YOU SHOULD NOT MAKE YOUR GAME IN A GENRE THAT MAKES THE MOST MONEY, YOU SHOULD ONLY MAKE GAMES IN DEAD GENRES THAT MAKE NO MONEY Being an indie gamedev on Steam must be some kind of masochistic fetish. I don't know how else can you put up with all this woman-tier retardation and humilation rituals.
>>566815830 subhumanite gamercunts will complain that your free game doesn't have the production quality of a AAA game they'll always find SOMETHING to complain about
When I make the virus character I want the virus to beg for mercy if you start typing rm -rf the-virus-dir by watching the command line input, I also wanted him to be able to "behind a stick" type stuff on the text lines, I think maybe I can do it in images as well. So I been working on making image parallax effect to be able to pull that off. I just trying to think of ways to be creative/gimmicky in a text panel.
>>566746427 is this nortubelian artworks? hmm, kind of sounds like a scifi race from starwars or something >>566792936 I disagree. I think they need to keep gdscript, and remove c# support. Let unity be unity. no need to bring c# smell to godont. keep it gdscript + c++ like god intended. >>566794205 so add subliminal binaural beats to your games atmosphere soundtrack >>566796762 it maybe can, but you're (probably) going to have to write custom shaders. meanwhile I assume unity probably has an asset store thing that does it. >>566798209 hot >>566801621 yeah I think the yellow fogs good but I don't like it being yellow unless you're going for a bright+dry / desert type vibe, then it could work. If you also spawned some semi transparent billboards / cards over the ground that are just BW smoke swirls that you modulate/tint to the fog color, fade them out as you approach them, maybe make them move slowly over the ground, I think that would look even better >>566798745 probably either >>566798807 or SSRIs (those are pretty much suicide pills) certain doctors legit be trying to kill us off
>>566814694 I'm that anon Age is not an issue, time it's an issue. I personally started in my thirties during covid; I never coded before, and in all my past attempts I was an ideaguy in search of coders/artists and so on. I learned coding, some pixel shit, and years later people even say that my stuff is not that shitty. You can learn, you just need to temper your expectations on your timeline. There is a meme about releaseing a game in 6months, but if you can work on your game 1h per day, in those 6months you won't do much. That why time is a problem. Imo follow your creative drive, but be mindful and work on small stuff. The upside is that in dev your work is usually not wasted. Once you make a system of health that connects to an ui bar (you know, like a game), that system is done and you won't need to make it from scratch again. U might change it and polish it, but systems will be in your toolbox, and your next project will be faster
>>566816712 >12▶ then get off the thread and either work or sleep. sleep makes your brain go faster again when you're back awake. you dont have time to be waisting on 4chan damn
What kind of setting and lore etc would resonate enough with humanity right now to make them want to play a 2d topdown massively multiplayer open world sandbox complex systems game?
What follows is a useless progress-free partly gamedev-related blogpost. Read if you have nothing better to do. Yesterday I had a fruit platter and it utterly failed to improve my day. In fact it did the opposite, so today I'm going the opposite way. Still working on updates on one of my existing games. Probably 2-3 more days to go. I have an idea for a new small game which I think would be pretty neat. In the olden days when I was young and hopeful, I'd have had to fight the urge to projecthop. These days I know any great idea I think I have will, in the course of making a prototype, resolve to something between "this is a shit idea" and "I could make this fun with some effort". 138 days left. I owe 850 minutes of work.
>>566816729 You solve small problems and build muscle, so you can try to solve harder stuff in the future The uphill is when you start and you rely on tutorials and black magic
>>566819263 one of us doesn't understand what incremental means. probably me but if it's about picking bonuses every level then it's no more incremental than any RPG
>>566819672 Fuck right off with that disingenuous lie. If you don't know what incremental slop is, then google is sitting right there in your browser waiting to be utilized.
>>566819672 He's a dumbass who saw incremental games use the survivors-like formula of "pick a power up from 3" and thinks that's a feature that defines the incremental genre now.
>>566820254 Not any of these anons but I've never seen an idle or clicker game use pick 3. I think that other anon is just a retard who thinks Vampire Survivor-likes are incremental
>Also, the combination of an idle/clicker plus a roguelike seems interesting on paper, but what it essentially boils down to is just always re-rolling for the same upgrades every run since nothing else even comes close to the same level of efficiency.
I delistificated my game because nobody bought. Yet for some reason, the steamie keep wishlistificating my game. Who is this bastard bitch? Where they come from and what they wont?
>>566820679 vampire survivors has defintiely some incremental design behind it with all the powerups and shit, it's unlikely anyone beats the first level with antonio first try
>>566821185 Everything if fine, but you don't have a marketable character. Preferably underage anime tomboy who will react yo player's success or failure.
>>566821523 It was just like 5 lines that explain the intro story a bit, as I thought "clearly everything regarding the game is explained by just watching the trailer".

>>566823379 >Nah, you will be a magic fishing gnome and you will like it. That's fine, but you can make a sidekick who will be checking on your progress and maybe ask for something as a challenge.
>>566823551 That could infuse some needed longevity. An NPC that goes like "catch 3 Caulifloaters in a row worth over 50 points total" (so you can't just quickly catch em all on the surface and have to go a bit deeper). Thanks for the idea! Onto my notepad it goes!

>>566827593 I'm a failure in life, and my last resort is try to monetize my childhood hobby with a hope to "make it" and escape my wagecage. No, I didn't study anything remotely near coding or video games in school, I've learned from tube videos. Yes my first game has been in development for almost a decade, but I can't quit because as I said this is my last resort. No, I can't physically work on my game for more than 1h because I get sick. Most day I don't dev at all because I'm too depressed, but I say that everything is fine on discord. I'm sure that if I "make it" I'll become a better person and my life will magically turn around
>>566831349 You're thinking about it all wrong. You think nodev gamers are on the same moral level as the creator gods known as gamedevs? Hell naw. The jew are right about the goyim. Gamerpiggies only exist to be exploited by the chosen ones, and doing so isn't unscrupulous at all.
>devs shove item drops into their games and put them on sale for sub-dollar prices to move units >the thirdies purchasing those "games" are doing so to grind out item drops they can hopefully resell for a profit >the only reliable way to cash out their revenue is to purchase hardware and immediately resell at a discount >Valve gets a cut at every purchase point and trade taking upwards of 50% of everything the devs make and thirdies grind
>>566833289 >devs are happy because they sell their game >thirdies are happy because they sell their items >hardware buyers are happy because they get hardware at a discount >Valve is happy because they make money So what's the problem here?

>>566835367 for your roguelike, how do you plan to implement levels? procgen? that's a rabbit hole. an rpg like zelda is simpler, but without the replayability of a roguelike, you are looking at a very long development to get even 1 hour of playtime
>>566836165 >for your roguelike, how do you plan to implement levels? procgen? no, premade rooms but they are randomly selected
im asking because we want to make 2 games. we decided to do the roguelike first, since it seems simpler. also i want to have an estimation of how complex it is going to be
>>566835667 rotate do you have an income? i dont know how to be happy when currently i am unemployed. my self worth is too attached to what society thinks of me

>>566827706 >>566829340 before regulatory bodies enforced consumer protections and market stability rules on banks it was a free for all where people were constantly losing their savings to bank crashes when they would inevitably try to abuse the infinite money glitch they had access to and end up breaking the money market over and over again.
and recently when cryptobros leveraged anti-government sentiment to convince people to return to the free for all through a "digital monetary system" the result was you didn't even get to use it as money before they took your lifesavings in rugpulls.

people in the future will be more intelligent, more skilled and more poor. unless they inherited or had connections. i wonder what this does long-term. if people will completely give up on learning anything, because what they really need is money and not knowledge stat points.
