Should I take the Super Mario Galaxy 2 Pill?

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a game I loathe. I despise it. It is the definition of shovelware. Of slop. So many of the levels are basic modifications of old levels, such as:
>The same level as before but you now have 30 seconds instead of 60
>The same level as before but one hit and you're dead
>The same level as before but enemies moves twice as quickly
Yet this game got crazy scores. Some people even call it the best game on the Wii. A game that has maybe 33% the amount of original content as its predecessor.
If I followed in its footsteps and farted out levels by the dozens, making small modifications such as time limits and enemy counts, I could quadruple the content of my game with minimal effort.

I tried a simultaneous action thing and it was okay but there was lag going on. Honestly I'd be better off making a real time system like League tft if I want that many enemies.

How were you implementing the AI?

I was using GOAP with A* pathfinding on all my AI entities for a while, and it didn't scale well. I switched over to a completely Utility based AI using a shared Dijkstra heatmap and now things are extremely fast.

Might be something worth considering depending on what the behavior is that you need.

the problem I was running into with A* is that each entity has to find it's own path to it's target. so it's a point-to-point with overhead scaling per entity.

By using a dijkstra "heatmap" emitted by a target, all entities can read this common heatmap and decide how to move. Since many entities are sharing a common context, this approach is ideal for "swarm" behavior. Depending on how you implement things, these heatmaps can have a concept of terrain/danger/cost. They're useful for steering contexts as well. You can overlap as well for things like "move here but avoid the lava" type situations. As a teen I never learned art besides basic Cinema 4D posing + render. I'm from a poor family so I never thought this would make me any money as a teen.
In my early 20s I feel for the "follow your dreams" propaganda, dropped my supermarket job, and enrolled to a gamedev uni. The headlights on the car use a spotlight. In godot docs, they recommend using an attenuation value of 2.0 for "physically accurate" lights. This is a trap, don't do it on spotlights. It made the lights super dim so I extended the headlights ten times longer to compensate. (pls don't laugh) I undid this because it was ass on performance and looked like shit. It took me a bit of fiddling to get the same effect with much better performance.

Aside from that, I just disabled sun shadows at night lol. Together that's like 20 FPS.

yeah I think the yellow fogs good but I don't like it being yellow unless you're going for a bright+dry / desert type vibe, then it could work. If you also spawned some semi transparent billboards / cards over the ground that are just BW smoke swirls that you modulate/tint to the fog color, fade them out as you approach them, maybe make them move slowly over the ground, I think that would look even better

Age is not an issue, time it's an issue.
I personally started in my thirties during covid; I never coded before, and in all my past attempts I was an ideaguy in search of coders/artists and so on. I learned coding, some pixel shit, and years later people even say that my stuff is not that shitty.
You can learn, you just need to temper your expectations on your timeline. There is a meme about releaseing a game in 6months, but if you can work on your game 1h per day, in those 6months you won't do much. That why time is a problem.
Imo follow your creative drive, but be mindful and work on small stuff.
The upside is that in dev your work is usually not wasted. Once you make a system of health that connects to an ui bar (you know, like a game), that system is done and you won't need to make it from scratch again. U might change it and polish it, but systems will be in your toolbox, and your next project will be faster

Yesterday I had a fruit platter and it utterly failed to improve my day. In fact it did the opposite, so today I'm going the opposite way.
Still working on updates on one of my existing games. Probably 2-3 more days to go.
I have an idea for a new small game which I think would be pretty neat. In the olden days when I was young and hopeful, I'd have had to fight the urge to projecthop. These days I know any great idea I think I have will, in the course of making a prototype, resolve to something between "this is a shit idea" and "I could make this fun with some effort".
