Kinda pricey to make proper ship battles.
If you tried to make something more reasonable like turn based battles, fighting on a big flat plane with no cover, elevation differences or something is extremely boring.

And you can't really blame this too much on Josh. He not so subtly clarified in the post-mortem that it was Feargus Urquhart that really pushed for ship battles.
>>

Unbelievable that one of the bg brains that vn ship combat will sell his game. Meme. Is feargie the guy that kicked avellone?

Just copy Sid Meier's Pirates. It will take a few weeks for a professional to implement a basic version of that.

Deadfire had a shitload of those storybook segments for whatever reason. In Owlcat games they are a nice change of pace, in PoE 2 it felt like half of locations on the map were CYOA with needlessly embellished prose. Fuck, I'd rather take shitty reused areas with single shitty encounter like in Kingmaker over that.

Idiot. I was pointing out that you're conflating your personal preferences with some kind of objective metric about their quality. And you're apparently too stupid to have realized this, so you fell into your normal default of being an arrogant imbecile instead of thinking. So now you're being told in much more blunt terms that you're a fucking idiot, and a particularly insufferable one at that.

Yes I can blame Josh because they could have been fun, how can you fuck up ship upgrades and pirate deck battles? By not finishing them that's how. We've seen how actual fun RPG ships work since Star Control II in 19 fucking 92

It's just like muscle wizards and bad book to movie adaptation all these le avant garde hipster devs and directors trying to put their own mark on a work through inventing square wheels when they haven't even played enough games in the first place to understand how a proper wheel rolls.

>>3967720
This is somewhat correct, but also not correct if done well. The basic CRPG rules need to be observed and let you control your own character within the larger battle piece is all.

>>3967730
True, imagine a return to sexy fun rpgs without self hating leftists.
>>
>>3968977
>It's just like muscle wizards and bad book to movie adaptation all these le avant garde hipster devs and directors trying to put their own mark on a work through inventing square wheels when they haven't even played enough games in the first place to understand how a proper wheel rolls.
You are suffering a serious misunderstanding, anon. They're not trying to invent any kind of fucking wheel. They do not fucking care about wheels. They only care about getting your money. Whatever facsimile or mirage they need to convince you to give them money, that's what they'll show you. None of it's real. They aren't trying to make art. If you perceive art in their efforts, it only exists in your mind.
They're not making games so you can have fun. They're making games so you will give them money, and whatever the bare basic legal minimum is required of them to get that money from you, that's all they care about.
>>
>>3967730
It wasn't really white guilt though. The native culture was pretty brutally critiqued in the game, you know. Like, it was the majority of the plot was how fucking wrong and grotesque the islanders' way of life was. They're constantly, constantly shown to be corrupt, selfish, hateful, ignorant and backwards. There literally are no interactions in the game with them that doesn't highlight their flaws somehow.
Similarly, there are no interactions with any of the colonial powers that doesn't directly highlight various ways in which their exploitation of the natives and the islands isn't somehow beneficial, necessary or rational. Yes, the colonialists are also shown to be selfish or cruel.
That's the point.
The game isn't saying "colonialism bad!", nor is it saying "colonialism good!" It's just presenting the situation realistically. There are only people doing whatever people do with the means available to them, including the influences of the culture they grew up in and the limitations of their technologies, etc.
This is the entire reason you keep having conversations with the gods, especially Wodica when she pops up. She's got this notion that mortals are worthless and stupid and always do the wrong thing (according to her concept of what's "wrong", which mostly just means that they want to control their own destinies, and she doesn't like that). You have the opportunity in those conversations to seriously think about what's going on and push back on her egotism by telling her that mortals are not good or evil. They're just not perfect because perfect isn't real or possible.
That's the primary motif of the entire story is that colonialism was not good or bad, it just was.
>>
>>3969028
>she doesn't like that
Doesn't she says it's pointless as gods could lead to higher goals? Iirc I agreed with her on got special dialogue as I always bashed her in the two games and she's like now you agree?

He probably didn't envision that the combat interface would look like a shitty cheap excuse from a 2003 html game or a gacha. Not even a view of the ships like in >>3967677
The book adventuer screens already screamed "I don't have the money or will to make this properly, here's a cheap trick instead", but trying to push it further and replace combat with that was of course a failure.
I always board just so that I don't have to seal with that screen.

>>3967720
this includes fortress and any management stuff, which was horribly done in PoE.

it has nice style, figures thed to look a bit meh, but there is a weird clash because the background is a prerendered texture and they didn't bother rendering it in decent resolution.

Deadfire .... is not really very much like PoE1. There's superficial similarities, like the chanter and cipher classes are still similar to their original versions. But overhaul on class mechanics and just general gameplay is so complete, I don't think it'd be fair to compare them.
And it's not just mechanics, it's tone and quality of writing, too. PoE1 could feel like a high schooler padding an essay, and just a lot of bullshit melodrama with amateurish pseudo-archaic verbiage. PoE2 is a true modern RPG with modern quality of life but also professional writing standards. Dialogues are clear, rather than intentionally obfuscated (fucking HATED Durance...) and the political situations are not just pointless bullshit: you have clear reasons to care about who you ally with or against.

The basic gameplay experience of managing a party of adventurers, navigating environments and dungeons and dealing with locks and traps and tactical combat, that's still here. It's a cRPG in the Western tradition. It's a modern BG2 with far - FAR - better balanced classes and mechanics. If you like western rpgs, Deadfire is one the absolute best. If you don't like western rpgs, then like... why are you here asking about one?
>>
>>3972534
>Professional Writing Standards in Deadfire
lol, lmao even. You're welcome to your opinions of course but I can't even begin to comprehend how bad I consider this take. Fair point on political situation, even if it's largely pointless it at least feels more organic and reasonable than whatever happened in 1. Too bad not a single companion is on par with the same depth and intrigue you get from characters like Durance, GM, Aloth in 1. Everyone is either a bumbling fool or a shifty jew with no insight
>>
>>3967656
>ship battles are the same brawls over and over again

The first part of poe1 and some quests were good. Game as whole was bad, due to idiotic design choices like soul reading and backer content.

Each attempt Obsidian makes to create their own universe rather than simply deconstruct a setting made by others, has been more disastrous than the last. Aside from the outdated gameplay and lifeless cities, Pillars of Eternity's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of combat mechanics, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Sawyer vetoed the idea of making anything at all innovative or original; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable nostalgia pandering to ageing Baldur's Gate fans. Pillars of Eternity might be anti-casual(or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Divinity series in its refusal of spontaneity, fun and excitement.

>a-at least the writing was good though

"No!"

The writing is dreadful; the narrative was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time I engaged in dialogue with an NPC the game presented me with a Wiki-page style infodump instead of anything resembling actual human conversation.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time this was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Sawyer's mind is so governed by obsession with pointless minutiae of the lore that he has no other style of writing.

Later I read a lavish, loving review of Pillars of Eternity by the same David Gaider. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kiddies are playing Obsidian games at 17 or 18, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Dragon Age II." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Pillars of Eternity" you are, in fact, trained to shill for Bioware.

Yea, fortress management in PoE sucks. They really liked the De'Arnise Keep from BG2, and decided to expand it into a management minigame, despite most people only going through that quest for the loot, rather than the idea of having some sort of "base of operations".

Hory shet, they changed how PoE1 TB works compared to Deadfire.

>TBM Turns have been reworked compared to Deadfire:
>Characters no longer take 1 turn per round. Instead, characters take turns as frequently as their Initiative (based on RTwP Recovery) allows.
>Faster characters (high dexterity, lighter armor, and/or speed improving effects) may end up taking multiple turns each round, while slower characters may act less or even potentially skip an entire round, if encumbered by enough speed penalties.
>>
>>3980704
good change, tb that doesn't account for speed beyond initiative is garbage.
>>
>>3976273
I think POE1 had more memorable fantasy power trips like fighting the knight king in his chamber, the skaenite cult, the whole endgame story and lore.

The midgame loses it, I have no idea what happens there or where the story goes.

>>3980704
>>3980758
these look like improvements, but as an rtwp fanboy I always want to ask why people dont like the micromanagement style of rtwp?
Maybe Im autistic but that and partybuilding are the mechanics I like in rpgs

>take a proper turn based mode
>poorly balance your keyboard on a wound egg timer every turn both to pressure your decisions and make the button presses sloppy and inaccurate while the keyboard slides around on your desk

Partybuilding is legit, rwtp is only fun if you only have to drive the MC and your companions have ai of their own.
>>
>>3980792

asking that quest isn't autistic, it's just stupid. might as well ask why someone's favorite color is green and not blue.

>>3972514
I don't mind wordswordswords, but I felt the system itself was hot garbage and didn't particularly care for the characters that much.
>>
>>3980792
>the whole endgame story and lore
Not getting the choice to side with Thaos pissed me off so bad. It would be one thing if it was something that required major effort, but they wrote a main quest where it would have changed no more than maybe ten lines of dialogue and two ending slides, and wouldn't have affected Deadfire's plot in any meaningful way. So why? It boggles the mind.

Cause siding with Thaos is becoming Maerwald 2.0 , an instant "game over". Besides, if you agree with his ideas, you can just convince Aloth to become the next Leaden Key leader.
>>
I hate Sawyer and I can't wait until he overdoses and dies.
>>
>>3981293
I wouldn't say that's necessarily true. Understanding where Thaos is coming from should be in itself enough to cure the PC's multi-century fixation with getting answers, if the PC comes around to the ideology once the past memories that caused the attachment are fully regained and understood. Let the player decide whether that's closure enough or not.

the colonizer faction is based on japan though.
>>
>>3981635
The Japanese are like bananas, yellow on the outside and white on the inside.
>>
>>3981149
I think siding with Thaos would be like siding with the Kuei-jin in VTMB if you know that ending
But the story really misses on differing paths and endings, I dont feel being a jerk in this and DAO is similar, so a Thaos siding option and a build up to that would be good.

there aren't, those are "rationalizations" for a gut reaction, people tend to want to make a coherent narrative out of their preferences.
