Because I'll have to wait 20 years for Final Fantasy VIII Remake Part 3.
FuRyu games are like gluten free pasta. Or Sugar Free soda. I'm not crazy for it, but I'll take it.
The settings aren't immersive. Every game is kind of in an artificial isolated simulated reality.
In classic JRPGs you'd tour a world map, and each town would have it's own troubles with NPCs living different lives.
But in FuRyu games, it's like, every game is Snow White, and the NPCs are the seven dwarfs with unique personalities - or flavors or brain damage.

It's not an invention of the English localization. But it is poorly written. This is supposed to be her "mask", her "Id". And you're supposed to collect tears called "Id...ea". Terrible nomenclature.
It executed a lot of concepts poorly. All the girl's guardians are named after Greek Philosophers. Kokoro's is named Diogenes a.k.a "The Dog" Famous for living shamelessly in a barrel and enjoying simple pleasures. And shining a lamp in people's face looking for an "honest man".
They made Kokoro's guardian look like a beefy blood thirsty werewolf.
To be fair, it's kind of hard to represent simple living, simple pleasures, like sunlight, when they're patrolling a conceptual after-life without a sun and you can count the number of people you can talk to on one hand.

Caligula Effect 2 is the only decent one, all others are like AI generated garbage devoid of personality and filled to the brim with very bad copypasted dungeons.
I don't even know what's their problem. Who the fuck wants to sit though 10 floors of copypasted garbage, even if the story and boss fights are 10/10 (which they're not), this will still leave a horrible impression and sour people on the game (and its developer).
Cut it all out. (Which is apparently what they finally did in Crymachina, but I haven't played that one.)

I can't believe anyone's actually talking about this. I've only played Crystar and I did think it was bad, but it also got me in the feels a few times and something about the gameplay is tuned just right for the way I like to try too hard at something mind-numbing. Rushing through the game only fighting bosses I came to see phanta rei's as a unit of measurement of boss health. unmarked spoilers\/
I think if I died to the final boss I would have concluded my time had been profoundly wasted, but just barely eking out a victory on the first attempt after having to unequip my dead party member's stuff to give to my last survivor so they could deal damage was the perfect conclusion; the way Mephistopheles ramps up the fight through his phases, the music, the context.
And some of the story beats fell really flat, but even though it was the same sort of thing, the scene where your parents are taking your sister back to the orphanage saying, "we tried to love you, but we just can't." I don't know why but that one landed.
I ended up spending more time with the post-game than the whole grind-through the story and there isn't even anything there, but gearing to break the infinite mode and collecting stories is weirdly fun.

Because I wouldn't have been able to confidently call them shit otherwise. Surely you don't mindlessly shit on games as apart of some faggotassed bandwagon because you didn't play it to some measure for yourself, right anon?

Only when they make me insecure because they're more popular than the games I like despite not appealing to me.

I dropped Crystar after the first fake-out ending. Everything was getting too spongey and I didn't want to grind. I liked Crymachina more, especially the setting.

I won't say you're missing much, but I liked the story more than I thought I would from the initial impression.
Turns out Rei was a twin, her sister dying at birth and her parents showering her with love for two daughters, which she never understood or appreciated, while the sister she loses in the game was adopted to fill the void and grew up with the insincerity they showed her, until they just dropped the act -she truly loves Rei, but she's quietly been warped by anger and also enjoys seeing Rei suffer.
I think Rei becomes a better protagonist the longer it goes on, because the overall vibe of the game says people are weak and that causes sadness, so it's important she's 70%potato/30%chocolate for most of the story, and her strength is the ability to endure without being bent out of shape, as she grows into an arbiter of limbo. Grinding through the game's endings to meet her twin sister at the end, who died before having a chance to be loved and stood her ground in the afterlife for as long as Rei's been alive just to watch over her, and you can't tell if she's stoic or hollow, was a good conclusion to that arc, and the final boss is actually pretty good, though again his sponginess was so intense I took over an hour of straight phanta rei's to kill him, though I did that to myself. His armor is so high Nanana did literally 1 damage to him so she was useless. I might be the only one who enjoyed the game like I did -it looks like any video of people playing through it just has them grinding up and facetanking through fights, so it seems like a bad game afterall.
I also liked Nanana's arc of accepting death and felt it was seriously undercut by the final ending where she just hangs out in limbo forever -like the message was supposed to be that's a bad thing right?

I dropped Crystar and started on Monark. Transferring my demo save file from 3 years ago, which I had grinded in for a while.
The characters seem a lot more...real, I guess? But maybe it's just the setting. It still has those introspective monolog moments with crudely drawn scribble art.

Monark has the best story out of the Furyu games if you stick with it to the end. Just know that Fertile Grounds are the grind maps and you're good. You'll have plenty of Spirit to spend if you stop and dick around in those maps for a bit and keep up with the new ones by finding their numbers or looking them up online.
I'm giving this unsolicited advice because it seems like figuring out how to grind efficiently is the deciding factor between someone liking this game or really hating it. So many people grind on maps that barely give as much Spirit as Fertile Grounds and then complain that they can hardly keep up with the level curve.

Part of the game's charm is that it feels somewhat oldschool. But that did not pan out well in an era where critics and many others see Persona 5 as the new standard. The asset reuse caused by its low budget didn't help either.
It's a shame because the game was made by Lancarse and not one of the usual Great Value devs that Furyu hires. There's a good level of polish to the design once you can figure out the way the game expects you to be playing it.
