I honestly thought I was going to drop this a few hours in and somehow it keeps getting better and better. Combat is still take or leave it, but the sheer number of zones/enemies/secrets just keeps surprising me.

froms game design is surprisingly consistent. they've been making the same game 30 times. armored core is on some level the same formula but just with mechs
kings field is just too much for me though. and I think they got lucky with dark souls. their writing sucks dicks unfortuntately

it requires some serious patience, but one I think is rewarded well enough. But I also fully admit to savescumming to zone starts instead of dealing with full on backtracking. In part because the game encourages enough going back that it doesn't really need it and because fuck me if that walk speed isn't brutal.

I just remember going to Demon for the first time felt like stepping into a half baked prototype so I wrongly assumed this was more of the same (despite playing a fair amount of their 6th gen games). If anything this has made me more receptive to giving Demons another go.

I started with the actual KF1 and it was fully capable of being engaging despite being so primitive (the short playtime helps though). Although it helped that I was already habituated to the old Fromsoft 3D controls from Armored Core, as in strafe with the shoulders and elevation with the triggers.

It's really great. I bounced off it hard when I first got it but I came back a few months later and fell in love. Currently working my way back up to it from the early games, so far 1 and 2 haven't disappointed (except for their final levels, jesus christ). As I go through the series the more I realize that everything I loved in dark souls came from king's field, and everything I didn't like that eventually took over was the new shit.
