I need moar games like this
>Some sort of a character creation or selection, with a variety of starting options and options for roleplaying different characters
>Your character isn't special, starts equal to most worthless npcs in a world, will easily die 1vs1 against generic bandit/big rat
>Simulationist elements, world changes without input from the player, working economy, countries fall and rise, factions change, npc characters improve and get stronger (or weaker) even if player doesn't do anything, in fact player can get left behind. Stuff like this, the more, the better. Player is just in caught the middle of a living world
>Sandbox world, no story or a very light, easily ignorable one
>Ideally cRPG and Strategy mix
Absolute crack of a "genre"
TES is more of a honorary mention, only really counts with Daggerfall, after that Bethesda gave up and started making generic, pre scripted action games instead of refining their idea. Still, they are almost there with some sort of Alternate Start mods with main story being completely disabled. Too bad that Bethesda is too much of a soulless AAA studio to ever do TES justice.

I will find out soon, I got it alongside tainted grail recently, but decided to beat shorter story based game first. I played Sea Dogs games years ago, but I only have some faint memories of them

>Also, have you tried Wizardry series?
not yet

Not in my game. My characters never were on an execution in Helgen. Word Walls do nothing. Even if I kill a dragon, no soul is absorbed. Noone calls my characters dragonborn, no quests related to this exists.

Underrail (single-character RPG)
ADOM (roguelike)
Caves Of Qud (roguelike)
Pillars Of Eternity, unironically (traditional classic party-basd RPG)
Grim Dawn (though it's actually a hack-and-slash, it's RPGish)

Tainted Grail seemed incredibly amateurish to me. The art style is all over the place, and yet somehow manages to consistently NEVER give the feeling of "Arthurian legend" at fucking all. You go from weird minimalistic Amazon MMO Spanish Inquisition directly to H.R. Giger painting and then to anime / Korean MMO dream world and it's like having a fucking seizure.
The combat seemed very Skyrim. Not in a good way, I mean that as an absolutely damning criticism. It's Skyrim except shittier somehow.
The inventory and menu UI was absolutely fucking excruciating. I don't know how, but they managed to do the Witcher 3 except even more obtuse and clumsy. Environments were barebones boxes stuck together, zero puzzles or navigation required.
And that point I just uninstalled the demo and said no. The "story"??? Just struck me as a teenager's dumbshit fanfic. "You guys, what if ARTHURIAN LEGEND????? But like.... grimdank??? And like... there's this knight guy? And he's trying to save the world from King Arthur who is trying to be resurrected and do evil shit that's somehow worse than the Spanish inquisition's experiments on humans??? Oh, and you have like magic powers and stuff to, like, throw fireballs before you hit guys with your sword like whAAMMM!!! and klbUUUUSHHH!"
After ten minutes of playing you will smell spaghettios. I fucking swear to god.

>just run around doing quest meeting people and it was quite good experience.
This is what I've done in Skyrim in recent playthroughs. Difficulty on expert or master, depending on the character. Makes the world feel more real with dangers everywhere early on.
I have seen mods that add little quests and jobs, but I haven't tried them myself.

Oblivion is correct though. You are some guy who becomes Martin's right hand and Sheogorath later on. You are not the predestined hero of prophecy like the Nerevarine or the Dragonborn.

If you did KotN, you are Pelinal Whitestrake, anon. You went insane when elves killed your boyfriend Huna ages ago. It's only fitting the mantle of Pelinal would continue on that path and become completely mad because of Martin's death. That doorway is your natural progression.

Everyone in Morrowind knows the Nerevarine prophecy.
Everyone in Skyrim knows the Dragonborn prophecy.
Everyone in Cyrodiil knows the... oh wait... the one about the Amulet of Kings is about Martin, not you.

>My dreams grant me no opinions of success. Their compass ventures not beyond the doors of death. But in your face, I behold the sun's companion. The dawn of Akatosh's bright glory may banish the coming darkness.
He sees Martin becoming Akatosh and you being around to help him.

>sees you in his dreams nonfucking stop
Yeah duh because he dreams about his son becoming the sun to banish the darkness away and Martin can't get to doing that without your help, just like Frodo could not get to the top of Barad-Dur without Sam carrying him. Still does not make your Samwise Gamgee the chosen one.

>specifically the role of Sam in relation to someone who has the role of Frodo.
Oblivion is the only one that immediately comes to mind. It’s fairly rare narrative device, usually the player is muh chosen one who saves the day.
