I think it was the randomness of it. We've been told time and time again anyone can die at anytime but Eliza hadn't really had much like that happen to her yet, so when it happened so suddenly I think it really caught alot of people out. Oh yeah, she won't suddenly become a terminator, lol, but something will change. Maybe she'll feel the threat coming, maybe she'll be able to cut blight creatures like dry grass, maybe she'll literally set things on fire with her burning gaze or something.
All this is just way too "gamey", too silly. I think the "awkening" is a change of mental state, first of all. Maybe she'll become more open, more confident, more resolute, not putting on a mask, sure in what she is and what she must do. Like that gift Simon gave her, "You have an 'edge' like this". Yeah Sprixer's talked about this a fair bit but she doesn't want things to get too unrealistic. Might seem like a bit of a stretch when we have gods and monsters walking about, but the monsters still die like any human would and the gods are very hands off even when their literal children are asking them for help they often don't respond. I think the change in mental state is a good way to put it, it's the sort of nudge to tell them you can do this so go out and do it. Eliza is already fairly out there as being more special with the blue flame and she'll probably gain immunity to fire like Jasper has, but I like the idea of her being more aware of threats especially with the way it lines up with how Rheos has been helping her already. I also don't think she needs more firepower with how Amund has been hyping up her sword, she just needs to actually use the damn thing.
