You don't need big heaping helpings to get the most for your buck, you can afford fancy pretentious stuff where appearance as an almost art piece matters more. There's also the element of multi-course meals with a lot of small plates so you can enjoy a wider variety of dishes. I'm guessing you haven't seen the ridiculousness of "tablecloth" desserts.

The second is just a generic roll cake, any recipe works the same, I can link one I've tried if you want. The third is self explanatory. Box mix with eggs and white chocolate chips.
