Mobile suits could all be replaced with fighter jets, and nothing about the story would change. But you're not ready to have that conversation.

But robots are cooler.

I mean, they're really not.

That's already acknowledged in most Gundam series. In UC its explicit that if minovsky particles (a material that disrupts long range radio waves) didn't exist then mobile suits would be unnecessary and humanity would revert back to guided missile spam.

jets suck at melee combat

Even the realest of real robots can be obari as fuck,
and yet as a fighter jet lover, I cannot say that any fighter jet can embody obari as fuck at all.

Fighter jets exude a different form of the spirit of the pilot. This leads to a difference in the way the themes of a narrative are delivered, in that when two mobile suits clash, it is a clash of all aspects of a character at once, whereas when fighter jets dance in the sky, there is an overt feeling of 'resignation from the pilots' over the fact that all that they can do is inflict absolute destruction in order to further their will. In Gundam and other mecha franchises, this resignation often shows up early, but is then is eliminated mid-series due to a realization by the protagonist that they do not, in fact, 'need' to inflict absolute destruction.

what are your thoughts on Argento Soma?

One of the problematic elements of mecha that people don't talk about is how they make infantry narratively pointless. Titanfall is one of the few settings that strike the balance of makings useful without making ground troops pointless.

>Obari as fuck
That could mean a lot of things. You're gonna need to clarify.

There would a lot more singing and one of the jets would become a transformers character

Infantry is for killing infantry cause mechs are expensive and hard to make
Tanks exist to kill mechs cheaply, kill other tanks, buildings, convoys etc
Most op implement of war we have is a big drone with a big bomb piloted by a guy two countries away
Even then its a matter of time and gear until drone meta stops being op and becomes another tool
Nothing is ever obsolete, just unfit for particular setting and task

If you need clarity you don't understand

Mechs have the ability to dodge tank rounds.

This is why Tomino said he regrets creating funnels, they're just tiny jets which makes them infinitely better than any other weapon besides Moonlight Butterfly or similar bullshit like the black hole beam cannon from G-Reco.

Nothing stops you from buying a t34 and giving it armored core style dodge boosters
I would go with JATO rockets

Except, y'know, PHYSICS.

That conversation was had as early as Victory Gundam. Everyone agreed mechs were still cooler.

But you're not ready to have that conversation.

Victory had those asinine helicopter beam sabers which I am almost certain Star Wars would later rip off. Victory doesn't get to be part of this discussion.

you need 'boots on the ground'
you can't WFH and do missions by robot proxy or like clear out an area and then land there later when everyone's dead
from a diplomatic standpoint and military one you need *people* there
>>
>>287521193
None of that matters. If you attempt to show an infantry fight, the audience will fast forward through it because it's not robots.
>>
>>287519621
A few of those were tried but even if they were pretty sick never really amounted to much.

Real robots are downstream of Starship Troopers, which is about infantry getting the capability to do everything else the military does so boots on the ground is the only thing you need (which has effects on the relation of military potential to democratic government etc). Toy companies just didn't like the scale but if you imagine the Gundams (Mobile Infantry Suits) are all just powersuits everything snaps into place.

the type of person who fast forwards/watches in 3x speed won't pick up mecha in the first place
there's a sense of purity in the mecha demographic which is gatekept by actual autism and this is a good thing

Why do you need a pilot inside a giant robot? Surely you can control it remotely just as well.
