Why don't the people who want more relevant girls in battle shonen just watch magical girls instead? It's basically the gender-flipped version of the same genre.

Fewer women watch anime so anime meant to appeal to them will almost always be less popular. Consequently, battle shonen, which almost always appeal more to men, are talked about more and are the first thing many people think of when they think of anime.
The people who complain that there aren't enough women in popular battle shonen want it to appeal to their minority while simultaneously being hugely popular with everyone else.

I think maybe they don't want to just watch one type of show for that fix, or they don't like the designs of most magical girls. Plus being frank magical girls are shoved at girls at every single opportunity, so it's not like they don't know they exist. Expanding their breadth to shoujo in general might help, but if they were looking for the kind of characterization and tone of a danseimuke action series and shoujo action simply did not meet that need, then there's nothing one can do about that
