The substitute only take damage from ghost attacks that target the body, so yeah, anything that targets the soul, mind or life energy can bypass it. It's actually quite limited once you deal with graduate class spirits, only preventing instant death in most cases

Interestingly this spirit didn't just take out the soul, but specifically the Dantian, the center of one's chi, and in this case, the core that connects soul and body, and seeing as this spirit knows spiritual techniques as well, maybe he is practicing Neidan, the Chinese spiritual art to make itself immortal

It's funny how this is one of the settings where this may be true after Marbas showed that, even in its improperly summoned state, it's a deity-level threat that required an overpowered graduate and an actual deity masquerading as a shikigami to beat him
>>
>>288535638
The japanese psyche is scarred by the abrahammic faiths. Something funny to consider is "If these ghosts are SO powerful, why didn't they stop the nukes and save the homeland?"
>Christian soldiers annihilated two of their cities with new types of science and forced their god-emperor to renounce his divinity
>A Jewish woman helped write their constitution
>They have to import muslims to stimulate their dead economy
If it's a question of numbers, the belief of 120 million japanese vs 4.3 billion abrahammics, they lose. There are other series where they show "the vatican" as running roughshod over everything like invincible terminators.

One thing to note is that there's a possibility that B ranked spirits aren't necessarily weaker than S or A class, since Yayoi says she ranks based on internet rumors, with:
S rank being inescapable or have curses with unlimited range, example being Asura who kills you instantly or Bleached head who traps you with his spatial warping
A rank being high chance of spiritual phenomenon and ghost with curses that make life worse than death, such as the fat parasite using ghost who only targets handsome men
B rank is if a group of people visited the spot, then only one would be made a target and the rest could escape safely
While stronger ghosts would likely have stronger abilities and thus be more dangerous, a graduate class spirit could be in a B ranked spot if it simply targets one person and doesn't attack often, which is likely the case here as the author probably won't waste the samurai's first battle on a scrub
>>
>>288517776
I do wonder how the ghost flashbacks work. Because it is used as an excuse, writing wise, to have Yayoi take an educated guess at what a curse does. So it's often not
>oh based on whats happening, I think the curse is something like so and so
but more like
>it was revealed to me in a dream
And the flashbacks come semi randomly? Or at least I can't figure out a pattern. iirc Bleached Head, A Dam ghost, High Priest, and Shuten never got flashbacks.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>288538771
Well, she would need to have something to consume like how Bleached head consume Shuten Douji, still crossing fingers for K tunnel ghost(the one who took Nagiko's body, a female tunnel ghost with hair powers, almost too perfect to be true)
>>
>>
>>288537294
Usually they do it during highly emotional moments, particularly if said flashback have something to do with their motivation for becoming evil ghosts, the parasite ghost from A dam was just a rapist so unlikely to have a tragic backstory or anything, and bleached head was a just a sadistic murderer who did his stuff for artistic expression

Thanks for the raws, OP. I've been following the monthly chapter drop for some time now, and recently started reading these raws as a benchmark for my own grind (currently at 4-5k vocab).
Reading the raws made me notice how wordy DG is. I also check thejashin-chanraws, and while that one I can read easily, DG feels like each panel is a kanji bomb.

That would fail against any God class or above level ghost. We literally see that her efforts were nothing against Risu-tan's bunrei and even using a field of it only took Mamoru's double somewhat by surprise since he wasn't fully anticipating it. This ghost is a powerful spiritualist in its own right, so it could likely just pass right on through any protective wear made from her hair.

New ghost is cool, I really dig how the lower half of his tattered robes double as hair. Seems to be two guys fused together, but I'm at a loss about why he's wearing a monkey's face.
I particularly love the lack of fanfare. All the top brass recently were making pockets dimensions and have complex powers and whatnot. This guy just walks up, takes the cord connecting your soul to your body, then walks away without a word.

He's using spiritualist techniques too.

He didn't use them for this it seems, but we haven't seen his power yet. It's possible he has something fancy too.
That said, I'm in agreement with you that it's smooth how casually he did this. Also liked how he toyed with them, "taunting" Yayoi's eyes, and "tasting" Keitarou, before the finisher.

Incomplete metamorphosis maybe?
Top half, corporeal monkey face body is the original body. But it's just a shell.
Bottom half is the same guy ascending to a higher level.
The hands are tied together to force the stealth mode technique because the main body isn't in there to move the shell around.

Difference is, I'd argue this kappa is doing its soulfuckery at a more advanced level - it damages the soul just enough to ruin the victim and completely destroy them, but it doesn't do so in such a way that it immediately outs its influence as supernatural (or at least, it's not the first thought that comes to mind). The ones who had their "heads" snatched ended up only LOOKING like they were alive; their physical heads were full of holes and their bodies were rotten, even ignoring them all being completely gibberingly nuts.
The kappa is a potent enough spiritualist that it simply doesn't need to do more than the bare minimum to get what it wants and it covers its tracks perfectly. The K tunnel ghost by all accounts is a shitter by Replaced standards and was too weakened from Asura to afford any measure of subtlety, so it just went for a big spectacle to get as many people as it could before dipping.

Keitaro was able to Taisui on the pic without even trying and Yayoi managed to see him when she concentrated with her spectre eyes. But this monkey spirit, even Keitaro wasn't able to see it, so did Yayoi, although Ai managed to see it. This spirit might be a deity-level like Taisui and only Ai could see it even when it bypassed both Keitaro and Yayoi because she's the vessel of a deity herself. Funny how something strong is already here on a B-rank spot. Keitaro just can't catch a break when during low-level spots and when you think they can't do you harm kek
>>
>>288560149
Ghosts can purposely hide themselves from her. That's why she brings keitarou along, because his presence makes them 100% likely to show up. It was stated early on that she had difficulty hunting ghosts after a while because the substitute system would scare any off or at least see her as someone not worth messing with.
She wasn't able to tell that Asura was a ghost at first too.
>>288560630
Rank is only indicative of encounter rate. The higher the chance of something spooky happening, the higher the rank. Problem is Yayoi's ranking breaks down at S rank and above since there's an additional caveat that once you're in the spot, you can't leave.

If it wasn't clear from reading the chapter, at the end Yayoi points out that "It made a sign and then vanished" and implying that it's using the hand-sign technique stuff we saw Taisai use during their fight. It's implied that it's not normal ghost vanishing or just ability stuff. He's using a spiritualist technique to completely hid his presence from them.
If you check the chapter pages, you'll also see that he's only seen when his hands aren't clasped together.
>>
>>288560199
Good thinking, but I'm not sure about the "complete" removal. For some reason the bodies that have the seat of soul removed seem to still be conscious and functional, though they are in a state of panic (even though the soul-body is also conscious). Tbh, I'm not really sure what the difference is between soul and seat of soul in this context. With the baby dolls that seem to have took the soul from the person's body, the bodies didn't panic looking for a soul. They just laid lifeless iirc. Maybe the author will go more into detail on soul and seat of soul. They did do 6 months of research after all.
>>
>>288561084
From what I gather, during the near death experience Keitarou had during the Dam A parasite ghost and F park Grim Reaper eater with the dolls, the soul was still connected to their bodies by what was a glowing line, as seen here
I assuming this line is the seat of the soul, and as far the body is concerned, if the seat is connected than it doesn't react because it doesn't know the soul is removed from the body due to some ghost's power, while in this case the seat being missing causes the body to freak out to search for it before it dies as the soul is no longer connected
Kinda like silent hypoxia where the brain doesn't immediately react to lack of oxygen but rather being unable to breathe out carbon dioxide
>>
>>
>>
>>288561724
>the soul was still connected to their bodies by what was a glowing line, as seen here
My mistake. I misremembered the soul being completely removed there. Iirc their souls also went back to their bodies on their own too, further supporting that it was still connected.
Then yeah, maybe this ghost removing the seat might be a way to forcibly separate the replaced from the bodies they took.
I wonder though, is this something special that this ghost can do, or can other ghost generally do it too.
>>
>>288560888
Yeah, it is subtle, but he is using the "monkey's" hands to make hand signs, first to conceal his presence and to then "disappear" (probably high speed movement) to run. I don't know how how Yayoi is going to lure him out again since his MO seems to be to just get one soul at a time...like someone else suggested, maybe the curse on Eiko's hand could help in this instance.
>>
>>288562932
>first to conceal his presence and to then "disappear"
Maybe my choice of words were poor, but the conceal his presence is the disappear. He becomes unsenseable and untouchable. Almost like he's in another dimension.
>I don't know how how Yayoi is going to lure him out again since his MO seems to be to just get one soul at a time...
Yayoi is smart. He might be invisible and intangible, but we do know he can sense us. This means light, and probably sound attacks, work on him when he's in this state. Priest's attack might be able to work on him like this, for example. Maybe having him looking into one of the dolls would work too. Idk which ghosts and tools they have on hand atm though.

Unfortunately they don't have priest right now as he's still recovering(really more plot convenience to let the other graduates show their stuff), but I am betting on Eiko's and Keitarou's curse reacting, as it did make Eiko hold her hand out when Keitarou was dealing with Otogiri and was hidden by illusions
>>
>>288564328
>but I am betting on Eiko's and Keitarou's curse reacting
Oh, nice.
However, he's outside of his physical body. If it still draws her to him, then I'd guess this'll be confirmation that the curse goes as deep as the soul.
Speaking of soul stuff, this got me thinking. If another ghost takes over Keitarou's body, and if his soul is outside of his body, how would the substitutes work? Would they still protect his physical body even if someone else is in it? If so guess this also means if a replaced takes over one of the main crew's body, Yayoi's ghosts may not be able to do any physical damage to it.Except for Speedy the Samurai of course
>>
>>288564484
Well, we already know the substitute doesn't protect souls, and the thing connecting them and substitutes are their body parts like nails and hair, so it should still only protect the physical body regardless of who is inside, but I presume they would eventually use the shinigami eating granny and her dolls to fix that issue quickly
>>
>>288564635
Speaking of granny, I wonder if she'll react to graduate 0. They might have to be kept away from each other?
I also wonder if Eiko's not allowed to use her since Eiko looks like the woman that killed her grandson.
>>
>>
>>
>>288554167
>Headless Jizo
Considering this guy's MO, and his "doubled-up" form (the top part seems to be also most separate) I wonder if he took the soul of a Jizo, if that's a thing, consumed it, and thus got the form he has now.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>288560097
Ghosts can hide from her senses since her sight isn't 100% perfect like Keitarou's is. She wasn't able to notice Asura at first either, but Keitarou immediately saw him and there are some spirits that Keitarou can detect instantly that Yayoi has to focus her vision to perceive. That's a big part of why she takes him along.
What's more notable is that the kappa could hide from Keitarou completely, almost assuredly through spiritualist techniques.
>>288560320
Something people haven't been pointing out is that its lower half is pure white, which is something we've generally seen associated with deities or deity-level entities. So the Kappa is most likely some manner of mad god.
>>
>>288560199
>>288562126
Even if using this technique could remove a Replaced from their host, it probably wouldn't be useful against the vast majority of them since they'd have presumably devoured the original soul from the moment they steal their bodies. It would really only help with Doroth since she's keeping the original around to torture her - and trying to go after Dorothy right now is a death sentence.
>I wonder though, is this something special that this ghost can do, or can other ghost generally do it too.
If they know spiritualist techniques, then it's likely they can do this. But the average ghost clearly doesn't - the brainsnatcher from way back when clearly didn't have a clue about how to get past the substitutes, whilst the kappa merely had to remove the seat of the soul here after having a 'taste' of Keitarou. I'd suspect most Replaced should be aware of how to pull this off given they're stealing the bodies of specialists.
>>

Note that what is called the "Tanden" here is equivalent to the Dantian in Chinese philosophy/Taoism and is the thing you're always seeing talked about in wuxia and xianxia novels. There, you have cultivators using it to cycle qi through their bodies and whilst it getting damaged or even lost is always extremely crippling, it's something that they can theoretically recover from given time or a replacement spiritual structure.
Here, well...you essentially have the body imploding if if ever gets taken away.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>288575251
That makes me think i don't remember some chink cultivator novel where the dantians are just outright stolen while the person still alive, they are usually crippled and destroyed but they are still inside the person, having it destroyed/crippled while inside and just removed should have different impacts i think
>>
>>
>>
>>288579809
Yes. It's a very direct, thus "surgical" approach. They go in and grab it. If you can't be so direct, then put something inside of them that'll liquefy it and have the body expel it.
Like if you eat something and it gets stuck in your digestive system, you can get a surgeon to go inside and take it out, or maybe you can ingest something that'll react with it in someway and get it out.
>>
>>288575251
>is the thing you're always seeing talked about in wuxia and xianxia novels.
I've never read such things, but I did watch Jigokuraku / Hell's Paradise. I assume that "Tanden" there is the same.
That said, I assume the author might put their own spin on what's what, so it might not end up following the same rules.

The soul seat is presumably necessary as the thing a soul's tether is connected to, that is - the thing the soul needs to find its way back to its body successfully. If the seat is removed or destroyed, then the soul can't interface with its body anymore and it just gets stuck (which is made even worse because the body will destroy itself looking for the missing seat inside it).
Replaced can fill in where the soul used to be because they clearly don't need to maintain the underlying spiritual (or even physical - that big head Replaced leader definitely fucked up whatever the host body used to be) infrastructure at all. It's all just meat to them. In fact, I'd say it's unclear if a body stolen by the Replaced would have the same reaction as a body that's had its seat removed in the event said Replaced was ripped out of it, given that the Replaced almost certainly destroy the original soul and alter the body to their liking. Dorothy's might, since she still keeps the original soul nearby, but for the rest I'd wager that their stolen bodies would just collapse like puppets with their strings cut.

Whilst the problems with Child specifically were addressed, moving a spirit into him just to keep the body from tearing itself apart would be a smart play. Sadly, they don't have any spirits available they can do that with (they could theoretically get Tai Sui for it, but he'd likely refuse unless they got him a really good fight in exchange).

Have we seen her bunrei operate without the main body? We know it's possible for other beings with bunrei to make them fully autonomous but I don't think Child's have ever displayed the same capacity.

There are several instances where there were bunrei that were separate from the main body but it's hard to tell if it was Child was or was not directly assuming control of them. The initial encounter with Child back in castle H had her bunrei stalk Keitarou and Yayoi, and when the two got separated, one spirit tried to puppet Keitarou.
There was also this instance back VS grandma chapter where a bunrei was used to as a security camera.

So was the spirit here all this time or did it teleport the moment it felt someone trying to do something to its victim? Or perhaps the exorcist guy summoned the spirit in hopes of exorcizing and realized he was fucked the moment he saw it?

It most likely had marked the child and knew the instant the priest was trying to mess with him, so it teleported over. Remember that the kappa is a powerful spiritualist itself and that we've seen it use the hand signs to completely vanish before, so I wouldn't put it past it to be capable of casual teleportation to the locations of its victims.
