I tried reading Mantra once, is the perfect example of how complicated is to read comics, reading it in order (Issue1, issue2...) leaves you confused because a third of the story is told in crossover in other comics, annuals and event comics, the "ending" of the comic doesn't even happen in the main comic but in a crossover even with Thor.

I read the entirely of Mantra a few years back. The smaller crossovers were annoying, but the fact that everything the book had been leading up to was paid off in the Godwheel crossover including the death of the series' main villain was utterly ridiculous. Also, unfortunately, the writing for the series as a whole sucked and it didn't explore the central premise nearly enough.

The whole thing with the kids was handled weirdly. He basically decided to abandon them to start with, resented them through the entire series, then right at the end spontaneously decided that he loved being a mom. Maybe it was supposed to be a longer-term slow burn and the Marvel purchase screwed that up, but as presented it didn't make sense.

The problem with Mantra is that the story never settle down to a status quo like other superheroes but didn't commit to being a ongoing narrative either, so you end with breadcrumbs of plot and breadcrumbs of every day life that don't really mix well. The story really needed more villains of the week or something.
