It's hard to think of what a "normalised" ABDL world would be like. Right now, you can just go 24/7 and live your life how you want. There's nothing really stopping you (besides external factors like finance and personal relationships).
I guess the idea of a normalised world would mean that some pillar of society hangs in balance because of common it is to be a bedwetter past the age of 3. That entire marketing teams and companies would make it so that diapers are easily and readily available for everyone. But really, how many people WOULD wear? In the world of Rocket Manatee, not everyone is padded, and they seem to prove that wearing diapers is still seen as infantile and regressive. There's still clear boundaries and a "taboo"ness to being a potty pants. I think what a lot of people (or maybe just me) would prefer would be less of a "normalization" and more of an "acceptance" of wearing diapers. That everyone around you accepts and understands your situation, constantly treating you like the dumb bab you are

There's also lots of denial in these stories, with the characters fighting against their diapered destiny, while the audience encourages this fate. In this way, we as /aco/ posters are actually closer to a background character in a story instead of the main character. We have already decided our fate as diaper wearers, and as such, we are already normalised to the world we're in.
To go back to the original thought of the appeal of taboo, I can agree with others that it's not the only appeal for a fetish. Truthfully, all sex acts are "taboo", especially if you come from a religious background. I don't think in a normalised world that making stickies in your pampers would be seen as any less taboo than it is currently. There's also a wide appeal to diapers beyond Ageplaying or Mental Regression, that a normalised world doesn't really consider. Some people like diapers as a piece of fetish gear like pup masks or leather, instead of a way to regress and explore dynamics. Typical normalised stories look over this fact, but there would definitely be sex clubs in this world that would still use diapers as fetish gear. Think about the people currently buying medical diapers with legit incontinence vs those that are using them to jack off

It can go both ways for me, depending on the story, but I prefer stories that don't really touch on the taboo-ness of diapers. If a character isn't willing to be wearing diapers, then it should come from some other context-appropriate reason, usually by wanting to be (or mistaking themselves to be) as part of some group that doesn't wear diapers. Doesn't really matter what the exact distinction is or if it's realistic or not.

I personally prefer stories that are fantasy enough where diapers basically aren't taboo, but I don't like it when the world goes full baby. There should at least be room for goth diaper girls in a coffee shop; if the world is too baby and everyone has to drink from a bottle, then there is no true status difference and no gap moe.

I understand the appeal of a story set in the technocracy of P&G where Pampers are the only brand and the only thing worse than toilets are Huggies, but that's a little bit too far out there for me. Non-consent is a big turn off.
