thats not how your post reads
>Memorial Day would have been a pretty great day to let it die.
i took "it" to mean the general.
if thats true then you want the general to die. but if thats true then why come back if you dont want it to exist?

well lets just say im sipping some west java at 9:39am
lots of acidic fruit in this one

I've been ripping some comfort roast lattes through the ikape. Probably the ideal use for it. Washed guat and a sun dried natural from el salvador. Tons of brown sugar, caramel etc. Flipped 2 kilos of it to the guy I sold the kinu to as well.
>>
>>22038838
can i get a more in focus picture of those beans they look pretty even
do you think this west java would be good through the ikape?
also ive been thinking if i should move on from focusing on grind size with it and instead lower my dose to 17/17.5 which is what i found worked best with my previous basket(straight walled 18g)
how much do you dose yours with(granted yours is the shallower version iirc)

I think its the perfect basket for the (moka) coffees you buy. The 58-46-40 stepdown I posted at the beginning of last thread is allegedly a bit better for my usual -lights but who knows. I still really like my original 2200 hole PCL basket.
>dose yours with
Fucking 18g usually. You bought the big one, don't underdose. Fill that headspace up so theres some resistance when the puck swells.
>>
>>22038859
>for the (moka) coffees you buy
ill try to interpret that as not an insult ;)
>don't underdose. Fill that headspace up so theres some resistance when the puck swells.
ok
and thanks for the extra pic. :)
>>
>>22038867
Not an insult at all. I just don't think its the basket I'd reach for when pulling Duckrabbit OWushwush or anything else Standart would send. I'd still go high flow+909s. But who knows. I should probably put in an order for 32mm bottom papers this summer.
>>
>>22038875
>Not an insult at all.
well usually when you bring up moka its an insult so just pattern recognition
>I just don't think its the basket I'd reach for when pulling Duckrabbit OWushwush or anything else Standart would send.
these days i wouldnt either. the way i choose to brew has imo changed alot since getting the hg1p as well as the v60. before everything would just get indiscriminately thrown into the moka(which gave results i liked even if it doesnt hold up to my current standards)
also since i just dont really brew espresso with light roasted or "delicate" beans
i just bought a few boxes of sibarist fast.
you said to bulk order them last time i brought it up and it sounded retarded at the time but it was a good idea so i did it.
and im using weber epf for top filters atm and have nothing specifically for bottom filters at the moment, mostly because i ran out + i dont know what to buy for the bottom of the ikape and if i would even like the result.
i know it probably doesnt matter for top filters but the epf paper quality feels much lower than the 909
>>
>>22038896
Pretty sure epfs are just normal cafecs but I've never bought them.
>quality feels much lower than the 909
909s are actual filter paper. Not coffee industry bullshit.
>Ahlstrom Grade 909 Medium Speed Wet-Strengthened Filter Paper. Wet-Strengthened Grades: Qualitative wet-strengthened grades are manufactured for applications using filter paper in a system or apparatus that operates under pressure or vacuum conditions. These systems require the use of extremely strong filter paper such as those in Ahlstrom's Binder Series. These grades contain a small amount of chemically stable, insoluble binding resin that strengthens the natural fiber-to-fiber bonds under wet conditions. Grades containing wood fibers or resins containing nitrogen, are not recommended for use in quantitative ashing techniques and in Kjeldahl estimations. Qualitative wet-strengthened filter papers are also used in industrial laboratories where technicians require a strong and economical filter paper with consistent quality and performance. Grade 909, 3.0 µm - Medium Speed. This medium flow rate qualitative wet-strengthened grade filter paper with very good retention is a tighter version of Ahlstrom 962. This grade has a rough surface and is often found in the food industry for routine tests.

I went to the store last night for milk and fresh apple fritters. Really leaning into the normie lattes. Another local store stopped carrying Fever Tree tonic water so I haven't been able to make my usual summer sprussy tonics :( I'll have to order a case or two soon.

you waste alot of coffee
and then over time you just know generally where a grinder dial needs to be
like a baker just knowing they have the right amount of flour, no measuring, they just look at it and know its right.
any decently qualified barista should be able to dial in within 2-4 shots depending on how forgiving the beans are
>>
File: Apple-Fritters-DSC_0135-II.jpg (54.3 KB)
>>22040087
Its like a doughnut, but not a doughnut and also way better. Chunks of apple, cooked in cinnamon+sugar+vanilla, then battered fried and glazed.
>>22040091
Having a great grinder really fucking helps widen the range of whats "drinkable". You'll throw away time and money trying to pull shots with a timemore c3.
>>
>>22040126
yeh they dont make those here
i looked online and the closest place that sells them is like 5 hours drive
and thinking about it now australia doesnt really do deep fried food other than chips(fries)(traditionally at least, im sure the gradual americanisation over the last 40 years has introduced some "invasive dishes" that some younger people might mistake as being australian in origin)
most of our cuisine is just baked or fried in a pan
but they sound nice :)

I have officially gone post 3rd wave and now intentionally brew my coffees to have significant bitterness.
>>22040765
Depends on how much you brew at a time. Only brew single cups? Just get a clever dripper or hario switch and be done with it. Doing 500ml+ batch brews? Quite a few options, Moccamaster, Bonavita, Breville to name a few.
>>
>>
File: 1511626959540.png (54.0 KB)
i am currently drinking dandelion root coffee.
verdict? tastes like dandelion, idk if these are roasted or not but the taste is bitter, it's not coffee but if you are delusional enough it still isn't too far off.
tasty? no. horrible? no. it's drinkable, and it has a certain... bananey or fruity taste. with the right roast i think this could be pretty alright.
but yeah, very very bitter.
what is everyone elses experience?

>check prices on good drip machines
>they've all gotten fucking expensive
>the bonavita I got for $80 six years ago is now over $200
The thermal carafe moccamaster is probably your best bet for a drip brewer. It's close to light commercial build quality so it will last forever if you take care of it. It has a significantly more powerful boiler and some level of water distribution over the grounds so that should noticeably improve the brews. But,
>$400
Have you considered a 12 cup bialetti moka pot? Would be way less expensive and get you a strong concentrate that you can use for mixed drinks or dilute down to drip brew level.

$12 thrift store espresso machine, missing the portafilter, it was really clogged but some straight vinegar fixed it right up, I thought my grind had turned the puck into hard cement because no water would come out
I'm coming from a nespresso where I'm used to making long ass lungos with 5g capsules, this shit is really something else, you can make a long ass 15g 1:4 lungo and still get a thick ass consistency it's really nice

Setup: Flair Classic, Timemore blackmirror nano scale
So I have this issue and I haven't found anyone else with the same problem so I'm asking here. I've seen other people using the same setup with the scale on the driptray but as a timer. I use it as a scale to measure the output of espresso, but my problem is the scale is sensitive to the lever movement and it shows a variation on the weight as I go down with the lever not giving a precise measurement. I've tried changing to a more stable surface but the issue remains. Anyone else have this/have resolved it? sorry for esl

i dont have robusta, yet. I'm going to be using cafe du monde for now until i can get some. the asian stores around me only sell instant coffee for some reason, like they have no whole or ground coffee at all (except cafe du monde)

well not just that but they burn it to ash too
trash tier coffee can be "fine" if roasted correctly and ground/brewed correctly
but the viets just did every step F tier and "fixed" it by drowning it in sugar.
it would take less effort to do it correctly
>>
>>
>>
>>22044532
you can do that with any brew method tho. i just dont get the necessity of the phin filter, specifically. to this point >>22044307 you could make coffee strong with any method, you dont need a phin for that..

>>
>>22044621
the phin is one of the only p/o devices ive seen that uses a metal filter rather than paper, in order to get more coffee in your coffee
ive not used one but i should think its design would also slow the flow out, allowing more extraction via immersion
its not a completely pointless device, it is significantly different than most drip devices

You make moka pot coffee and when it first starts to brew, you pour off about a splash into some sugar. In this case honey. Then you whisk. It makes foam. You pour the foam into a cup and pour the rest of the pot over it. The foam will rise to the top and perfectly sweeten your coffee

yes
even though a moka pot brews by way of percolation it is different than a percolator which makes burnt coffee because it constantly recirculates brewed coffee back over the grounds and back down into the boiler

>>
>>22047255
new bialetti are chinesium
but there even lower quality ones than that
like a cheap bialetti is still better than a cheap random name moka.
if you just want to try it and see if you like it then i probably wouldnt recommend a higher priced one.

i used to just use the reusable mesh strainer thing in my boy here but turns out paper filters actually do filter some stuff out of your coffee that are measurably and not just hypothetically-in-some-studies-maybe bad to consume
ordinarily i probably wouldn't care but at a pot a day i've started to use regular filters. kind of annoying
>>
>>22050072
>do filter some stuff out of your coffee that are measurably and not just hypothetically-in-some-studies-maybe bad to consume
nah thats bullshit
so of you think 1 microgram of oil from a cup of coffee is so bad you need to filter it out then you should also never consume oils or fats from any source.
but thats fucking retarded.
>>
>>
>>22050275
depends when it was made
they have made 300 million moka pots so i assume there is a ton of inventory around the place before every new one that is sold is chinese
also bialetti was sold to a holding company that is mostly chinese but is party european still.
so some new pots might be made in other parts of europe and also the materials of new pots will change.
>>
>>22050072
>>22050092
>paper filters actually do filter some stuff out of your coffee that are measurably and not just hypothetically-in-some-studies-maybe bad to consume
Studies bore this out. It's a matter of indifference WITH DARK ROASTS, which push the temperature roasting to the point of breaking down the acrylamides. You will get liver and kidney gains from paper filtering Mediums & Lights. But if you've properly hydrated before coffee, you're getting a kidney boost (or deboost) accordingly. It's just a matter of how you like to brew and what you're willing to do.
>>
>>
>>22047255
Don't get a no name knockoff. Remember moka pots are pressure vessels and if the safety valve malfunctions you basically have a small bomb in the making. Who knows what kind of scrap bin PRV is installed on the knockoffs, in addition to them having thinner walls. Bialetti makes induction compatible moka pots but I would still recommend just getting a regular aluminum one with a separate cheap induction plate since moka pot brewing is relatively heat sensitive and that setup will allow you to have very tight control over the flow rate by just lifting the moka pot on and off the plate instead of having to constantly chang the induction heat setting.
Matt D'Ottavio's channel has a lot of great moka pot videos.

thats different because its not just coffee, its a specific meme drink that he needed a visual example of. it is in service of his question.
also in that picture the actual dark liquid is the least interesting, least eye catching and least photogenic thing in the picture.
if you get a blank background and a normal glass and no foam and have worse lighting(aka my kitchen)
and now that im taking a closer look
>>22045734
anon you look rather womanly in the reflection.
looks like a woman in a pencil dress, but i could be wrong.
could be a mans arm and the elbow is resting on the edge of the counter leaning forward to take a picture and the arm is obscuring the body.
either way it proves my point that the reflection in the drink is more worthy of having a picture taken of it than said drink.

woooow this entry level $200 espresso machine is soooooooo good u just have to disassemble the whole thing and change the steam wand with a better one and buy a new bottomless portafilter and grind basket and ditch all the included pressurized plastic junk accessories and get a scale and a spinning WDT needle thingy and a weighted distributor and a better shower screen and a puck screen and a calibrated tamper and a...
you know what i think i'll stick to my nespresso thanks
>>
>>

the trick is to get a thrift store machine for like $10 that will be missing all of the junk accessories anyway and you just buy what you need, the bottomless aftermarket portafilter which comes with a double grind basket already, an all-metal tamper and maybe a funnel if you don't wanna make a mess, not even $300 or $400 machines come with piss basic all-metal accessories, spend the rest on a grinder.

i have an alignment issue with my super jolly, i bought new springs for it and i hope thats the issue as i hate calibration and would like to stop here.
basically it starts chirping too early, so instead of shimming i thought springs might be the issue.
like 20 year old springs that have been under max compression the whole time has probably fucked them.

it's not hard to spend $100 a month having 3 meals at incredibly mediocre restaurants, and you can have like 99th percentile coffee twice a day every day for less

Got meme'd by a youtube video into making chinese milk black tea coffee.
First go was decent. But probably too weak. I have a 1L teapot. Used 2 bags, then two shots from my machine and then a bit of condensed milk.
Tried it iced and hot. Iced was bad. Which is interesting since I usually prefer iced coffee unless the weather is very cold.
Will probably try it again but using single cups instead of making a big batch. I might end up preferring the tea/coffee/milk combo over hot coffee.

why do redditors buy budget espresso machines then spend hundreds more on modding the fuck out of it?
it's still made of cheap shitty plastic, I bet this dude has a shelf full of fully decked out mechanical keyboards

typical mods include a bolted on PID to avoid temperature surfing, manometer and pump dimmer to fuck with the flow rate in real time, installing a steam wand from a better machine, IMS shower screen, and sometimes even a solenoid valve to get a dry puck.

okay I made it again but just in a regular large glass mug (the 480ml mugs I got from delonghi's promotion when I bought my machine).
Was about 200ml of water for one tea bag, then a coffee shot, a bit of condensed milk then hot milk from the machine to top it off. think I like it better than just coffee.
