I honestly never heard of this, but it seems interesting. Not a lot of drama anime gets made these days and I like the supernatural angle. Will check it out

The old anime was weird, atmospheric and depressing, but it also had no budget. The manga was supposedly solid and the novels are great, but they were never translated except for some excerpts on /a/. They were gayer than most BL.

Anon, I wish you warned me how esoteric the Genesis anime was before I got 10 eps in and found out that it does not get better. Looking around at the reviews, it seems that the original live action drama was the most popular version in the cheesy Machine Girl 80s flick type of way.
Not sure if I want to try the 2041 anime, but it does seem like fans enjoyed it more than the original anime at least. Also, you were right about it having no budget. The inner zoomer in me had to watch the latter half of the episodes on x2 speed because of how many flashbacks and still panning images there were.
All in all, I can't give the show too bad of a score since the plot intrigued me. I was left wondering where the hell they would go next until enough was enough.

As a fan of slow, moody stories, I thought the new anime was a downgrade. It’s a 24 episode story compressed into today’s mandatory 1 cour and boy does it show.

As for the esoterica, it was a product of its time. In the early 90s Japan was neck deep in the New Age stuff, so the author took the then popular ESP themes and went “living with these superpowers would fucking suck, actually”. Kind of reminded me of Robert Silverberg’s Dying Inside.

While we're here, what's the ideal brotherly dynamic you enjoy? Personally I like when there is some sort of gap or imbalance. Such as the younger one idolizing the older one or when the older one feels insecurity towards the younger surpassing him
