We almost DID get a Helga spin-off. It was going to be called "The Patakis" and supposed to be about Helga as a teenager in High School. Most of the cast is still around except Arnold moved away. It was supposed to be more adult than Hey Arnold!. They tried to get it on Nick and Nite but it was "too dark" for them and when they tried pitching it to MTV they passed on it too since they thought it was too similar to Daria.

Within the "mini-Bible" for the show it says Helga's mom is on the "road to recovery" from her alcoholism but it sounds like a tough road so I'd expect relapses and such. Bob has expanded into more than just beepers with stuff like phones and DVDs. One of the more interesting things is Helga's sister ends up a struggling actress and doesn't seem so perfect anymore:

You have to remember that these are kids. A kid character having a crush on another kid character from school has been a common trope for a long time, like with Charlie Brown and the little red headed girl. But usually they're too shy to ask them out on a date and not mature enough to realize maybe it's not their "one true love" and maybe they can find somebody else. So it's not as creepy as if an adult was doing it.

I remember some Chinese kid would write stories where he would get with his crush and literally kill me because he was jealous I would hang out with his crush often. That's just stupid kid/teenager shit. Anyway if we're talking about being weird and creepy, writing letters to Arnold is not as messed up in my opinion as Helga making that statue of Arnold out of his used chewing gum in the original series.

Look I dont want to drift too off topic or go off on a tangent debate but this is only true in certain western cultures. Believe it or not but there are in fact cultures where its not only socially acceptable for women to approach men with romantic attention but also the expectation. Which sex does the approaching is more of a cultural trait than some inbuilt biological one.

Sometimes it's not so much the female as the female's PARENTS, but same basic idea.
'approach' is not really the point. The point is selection. The males would select ANY females if it was our job. Females are choosy, so we have to be the ones who show off. A female latching onto a male and choosing him, however that manifests, is how it is meant to be. Be it stalking or 'i choo-choo-choose you' cards.
Then, having been selected, his job is to purchase a small gift for her to show he won't abandon her. Then they move on from there. Obviously there might be (should be) a lot of dating before that part, but that's the thing about choosing, there's tiers of it.

you aren't wrong but I do think the attitude aspect is pretty important to the equation as it effects how people perceive her, for example see Arnold's Valentine where the way Arnold acts around "Cecile" is quite different from how he usually does around Helga cause she drops most of the bully act while playing the Cecile role and it definitely isn't because Helga got dolled up for the role considering she got similarly dolled up in another episode where they went to a fancy restaurant but had her usual walls up so they interacted mostly as normal
