My take on it is, they have very little regard for life. Since they are on the top of the food chain also they can breed like rabbits. Also they live hundreds of years. Life to them would be almost meaningless. So to bring themselves meaning they need to have this insane standard for themselves. The Betrayer guy Thaedron I think his name, he said "I thought we respected strength and these guys are actually holding us back pretty well, why not set them apart and make a peace deal". That is what Viltrumites care about is finally feeling meaning. Also i think it fits into sometimes just wanting to be in command of planets rather than just genociding all life forms. To feel their culture has also dominated in the universe too, to feel meaning from control.

I fucking hate the plot armor/shitty writing within this show. Kirkman should have just had Mark, Nolan and Oliver working with the viltrumites to survive and help with any attacks they need help handling. By doing this you don't have to give Thragg a flimsy excuse not to kill the Grayson family(which honestly deserve for what they have done) and their allies. Seriously you can have certain races within the Coalition catch wind on what is the state of the viltrumites in general and they decide to launch a good surprise attack to weaken them further but are soon brutally reminded by, if not already, why Viltrumites will never be easy to put down and especially when it comes to their leader...

Just have certain races within the Coalition be the occasional enemy that wants to see an end to the Viltrumite threat once and for all and that includes scorch-earthing any races that are viable with them. Now as for Thadeus... honestly he needs to be temporarily removed so that Alien politics can stir up trouble and get conflicts going or get completely taken out by Thragg sooner then later.
