A little late to the party but what's the general consensus on the movie? I though the animation was gorgeous but wasn't a fan of Airbender Broly.

Bryke are really similar to those dime-a-dozen anime writers who make anime originals that fall apart on act 3. They run on vibes and what they think seems cool, shooting from the hip and just running with it
>>
The animation is excellent, genuinely one of the best looking things to come out of the West in a long time - it is then basically wasted on everything else.
- The original voice actors were replaced with noticeably poor diversity replacements. Considering how they are both available and all capable of returning to their roles, as well as a core component of what defined their characters, this is basically unforgivable. There's no excuse, Paramount are either just garden variety white-haters, or simply needed a reason to not pay voice actors a fair wage for reprising a legacy role.
- It's a boring mcguffin quest of a plot, generic and uninteresting. Things happen that are stupid because there's a magical excuse for it.
- Bad lore/worldbuilding that fails to avoid cheapening the world, but this is par for the course at this point. Everything "added" to ATLA seems to just take away.
- Inconsistencies with established worldbuilding, but again this seems to just be the standard at this point, people love going into this "beloved" franchise and then immediately ignoring the sanctity of any established continuity.
- Aang is, essentially, a bumbling idiot despite the fact we know he was capable and resourceful as a child. In his prime, he would be basically Superman. He's not going to have trouble dealing with a bunch of normal humans nor would pacifism make him incapable of stopping them. Other characters are similarly lobotomised despite being obviously wiser now - the plot can't be bothered to justify a strong opposing antagonist so just settles for making the protagonists stupid.
It's just another thing that fails to understand what makes ATLA good or can see any means of revisiting the story in a way that recontextualises anything meaningfully, let alone doing so in a way that isn't actively damaging something special about the original. It's a modern sequel. If not for the production quality, it would be barely worth a mention.

I came back to /co/ today for the first time in years because I heard about the avatar leak. Around 2014/2015 I fantasized so much about continuing the series. I was thrilled to hear about paramount picking it up a few years ago after people realized how many people still adored avatar when Netflix started streaming the series during covid. After hearing about how paramount handled the leak and pics from the new series, I am incredibly disappointed but not surprised. I will be watching the movie that got leaked. I feel horrible for the animators that put their souls into the movie, just to have it leaked and dropped from a theatrical release. The new series looks like it’s doing way too much. Post apocalyptic world is so over done. Late 20th century earth bender would have been so much better.
>>
>>153254674
Animation's more a mixed bag, imo. It's decent in some parts, but others make it clear why it was shunted onto streaming as what makes a TV show work doesn't really translate into theatrical results. Most TV-to-Movie adaptations have that problem.
As for
>The original voice actors were replaced with noticeably poor diversity replacements. I am convinced it's them trying to pander to the DEI crowd. Which would be fine, but a little annoying, if they didn't simply think "All Asians look alike" when recasting Zuko, the other Fire Nation individuals or the Cabbage Merchant (seriously, why wasn't James Sie brought back at least?). And tried a little harder with the rest of the picks. Everything else is part and parcel for the franchise after the original series ended.
I do have to wonder something about the casting though. Is this bad, or worse than the casting in the live-action movie? Because honestly, I think that might be MORE offensive in how incompetent that was.

How is it a given? Nobody knows who Flying Bark is, unless you work in the creative industry in Sydney, so I’m assuming you’re a Flying Bark employee.
Flying Bark is literally not known for anything. And also, something like 10 different studios worked on this, Flying Bark mostly helped with the 3DCG.

I don't like JJK but I think it's ok if people watch a show just for the hype and aura tiktok friendly action scenes. I've watched some things purely for the spectacle. It's a problem when something like that is seen as like actually higher level than it is, when so much of it runs cold with that made-by-committee-checklist feel

>set up ideas and situations that seem cool or interesting when introduced
>things feel stupid and start crumbling apart hard in the last third, the most difficult part to pull off right, and landing the finish line with good satisfying execution becomes a distant dream
A pattern that pummeled LoK and many animated series
>>
>>
>>153256317
But Lok is not like that, Lok just swings up and down in quality, never passing a certain standard and in terms of original anime there are very few with that many episodes(and those are usually pretty good) as lok. Also it’s not just Bryke, Dante screwed up as well.
>>
>>
>>153256459
LoK's sectioned arcs where the 4 main villains each got 1 season for their story and were not in contact with each other follow the failure of follow through after a cool idea brought in interest. S1 and S4 as the most clear examples

At least their relationship worked in this. I think the issue with the original was that Aang was simply too childish so the romance wasn't really believable. But now he's a bald chad.

>Bad lore/worldbuilding
I try to give them the benefit by treating this movie like one of those shonen anime movies where it clearly isn't canon, just a side story meant to be enjoyed, but they insist on treating it as a bridge to korra. It's odd that they cant introduce new lore to avatar that fits the tone of the original show, and that it feels so fanfiction-ish.
And it's silly watching aang in his prime fumble throughout the movie because not only should he be much stronger than the child version of the main series but also wiser, but he was as naive as a child throughout and had to learn lessons even the kid him would've already known
>>153254816
The thing I don't get is why they replaced Dante as zuko's VA. Hes asian, but not Japanese enough to play Japanese-inspired fantasy race. But the new guy oddly enough is Korean? But the new guy is currently a trending actor, so it feels like it was just an executive choice to pick a guy who was more "mainstream" than someone that the fans actually like. But at the same time they fell in line to the new "characters can only be voiced by their race"

This is partly the case. It most certainly is so with Mae Whittman, as she's still very active in voice acting. It's definitely odd in the case of Dante Basco, as he was one of the few asians from the original cast. But with Aang, Toph and Sokka's VAs, it was absolutely unavoidable as all three have long since retired from the entertainment industry so they had to be recast.

>But with Aang, Toph and Sokka's VAs, it was absolutely unavoidable as all three have long since retired from the entertainment industry so they had to be recast.
All of three of them wanted to come back, and jack desenna absolutely is still active. Zach had retired from VA work but a fan spoke to him in the con scene, which zach is now really active in. allegedly he wanted to come back for aang again barring a few other projects he was working on. and it's become abundantly clear mae stepped aside for PR reasons.

>But with Aang, Toph and Sokka's VAs, it was absolutely unavoidable as all three have long since retired from the entertainment industry
You're straight up making shit up. Sokka's VA has work as recently released as last year and has more releases slated for the future including reprising his role in Dragon Prince, pretty sure he would have reprised Sokka for one movie considering he's doing the same thing for another movie that hasn't even come out yet.
Toph's VA doesn't work as much anymore but like Sokka's VA has done work within the last year (and this movie was in production longer than a year). Not only that but one of her voles was for a fucking gacha game, I highly doubt she's only taking really important roles that speak to her or some shit, it's probably just she doesn't really need the money but again, I'm sure she would have done 1 movie if the price was right.
Aang's voice actor would also probably do the role if asked even though he doesn't do much voice work. He likely doesn't do much voice work moreso because he can't get work anymore because unlike the rest of the cast he doesn't have an established career as a VA, he was a child star.
Its clear this was done for PR reasons and MAYBE price reasons. None of this is even touching the reality that many of them already came back and played their characters as adults in Korra with only Aang being a new actor and they didn't ask him to come back either. If cowards want to do this racist casting shit they should do it proudly, they should disown the past work as unacceptable because if you won't its clear this is about pandering, money and imaginary woke points moreso than making good art. None of them will though because they want to have their cake and eat it too. They want to still do their Toph voice impressions on Fiver while also not calling out the casting director as passing on hiring them because of their races.

I'm a simple man. I want ONE thing from the animation industry. I want a good looking 2D action cartoon. I'm at the point where I've even lowered by standards for writing and storytelling, literally just dial back the crappy romance drama and I'm happy.
For whatever reason, a good looking action cartoon is hard to come by. If it's not from Genndy Tartakovsky then it's quietly airing on a streaming service and won't get recognition until it's about to end, and if it's not that then it's an occasional 2 minute gag from Gumball or Teen Titans Go. I thought them changing the voice actors was stupid, and I've watched every clip I've seen on mute (because I've only seen it on twitter where every video starts off muted, and blueboard 4chan where there's no audio), but it's got the one thing I constantly ask for; great fight scenes, so wherever it officially drops on, I'll watch.

I was a little skeptical to believe the whole VA shit but I guess this AMA confirmed it. Even if one or two of the original VAs weren't available they didn't even consider the rest because they wanted "authentic" casting. This is so hilariously racist it borders on comedy. Also funny how this only works one way too.
Glad I pirated it.

>But at the same time they fell in line to the new "characters can only be voiced by their race"
That's the problem though, they didn't. Toph is the only Asian in the film to be voiced by someone of their intended race, Zuko's supposed to be Japanese-based like the rest of the Fire Nation. By that logic, it should be a Japanese-American actor in the role, not Invincible. But I assume, like Bautista's casting, Yeun was brought in for name value (would also explain why Ken Jeong was cast as the cabbage merchant too).
Like I said, by trying to fix the problem, they made it worse.

I'm not worked up at all, if anything made me mad when making that post its that the guy I was responding to was straight up lying to make his point. That does make me mad when people do it in any conversation. I also disagree, I actually feel like we're already seeing push back on this and some VAs are starting to realize it actually makes it much harder for them to get work, including people in the groups that were intended to be helped by this attitude. I have no issue calling out a liar and pointing out why this whole situation is stupid because I actually think realistically over time people are going to move away from being so stringent in matching this shit because it also just becomes less and less viable as time goes on.

Toph was nice in this movie, big bonus is the massive influx of more art of her though if you're a lolifag it's a curse because the vast majority is probably just gonna be Adult Toph from now on
Also the Avatar-verse is one of the few franchises where you see a character either born blind or go blind and immediately think about how much of an upgrade that might be for them, like 2 out of the 4 elements could give you an amp when you're blind with tremor sense and that air current shit airbenders can do, if an Avatar went blind would that mean they just get Daredevil-tier radar sense by being able to sense all the elements around them at once?

Just dont make him in to a joke character all the time, he had character growth in the tv series, dont erase that.
