Have her fuck off. She and Zuko come to an understanding where they bring out the worst in each other and agree to never meet or speak again. Azula starts her own life as far away from the Fire Nation and does her best to focus on her new friends and family and leave her old life behind.

Azula would never do that. She’s not the self-loathing “find myself” type like Zuko who wants to leave it behind and become a wholesome heckin farmer or some shit. She’s royalty.

Fast forward to when they’re adults. Azula knows she can’t become Firelord anymore, but settles on advising Zuko’s son to still have some power over the nation

A massive threat to the fire nation comes that requires Azula's help. Zuko frees crazy Azula from prison. Despite being crazy, her strategy helps the Gaang overcome the threat and in the final battle she sacrifices herself to save everyone.

Not so much a redemption arc for Azula persay, as she her arc is more about her choosing to fight her father and confrunting her upbringing. And definitely not post cartoon but this is properly the most realistic depiction of her being good in any way. Givin how she still a bit crazy here. I know this is not what's being asked for here, but its one of my favorite Fics and wish more people would read it. As it is probably the best insperation I would have to awnser this question.
Cause she is a Sociopath, and if she redeemed herself. It would have to come to grips with her being being changed by what few connections she would actually care about. Sure Anag could try and be calming and the like, try and see if he can emaptily reach her. Only to fail in that and have to realize that a more practical and logical approach would best get her to become her Mother's advisor. Cause the relationship between the two is pretty fractured.

Isn't that the one whereZuko rapes Azula and she gets pregnant?

In a way that mirrors Zuko's redemption while highlighting the differences; that her aggression and egotism is different from Zuko's insecurity and frustration. So it would have to be about her finding empathy, where Zuko's redemption is more like finding rationality.
She would need to have some sort of objective like Zuko needed to capture Aang, but then have some sort of spiritual guide character to help her along, subtly teaching her to care for others. There isn't really a character within the series that is particularly well-suited for that role though. It couldn't be Uncle Iroh or any of Aang's friends. I guess technically the closest thing would be Bumi who would have the mirror -image-to-Iroh angle by being crazy instead of calm, but that also wouldn't work. So it would have to be an original character.
Also it would have to be after the Azula beach episode but before the climax of the series. So the timeline would have to be altered somewhat.

Azula had a mental break-down episode, that she gets over - and isnt permanently crazy
she rejoins the plot when Zuko, seeing that she's doing better, tries talking to her normally, and it slowly turns into her giving him advice on court politics
it becomes obvious that their ideas are at odds, Zuko wants to use political solutions as means of avoiding violence - while Azula believes that politics is just another tool used to strong-arm people into doing what you want
it quickly becomes obvious that she is trying to push Zuko into being her ideal of a Fire Lord, but because of some kind of crisis ( a civil war or something equally serious) he has to rely on her help
something dramatic happens and Zuko is forced to crack down hard on his opponents
turns out that unleashing overwhelming brutality against his foes minimalizes overall casualties, so Zuko leans into that more
Azula now gets to see first hand her ideals realized
and doesn't like it - which forces her into a retrospective episode
she now has to find a non-violent solution, and convince Zuko to choose it instead, essentially arguing against the world view she used to hold
ultimately the siblings find a middle ground and Azula becomes Zuko's right hand and chief advisor
she also becomes a professor in the Royal Academy for Girls

Aang seals her power amend shes ostracized by the Fire kingdom as Azula of the flame the mad queen.
After yet another assassination attempt and talk of a coup Zuko publicly removes her from the royal family and "executes her"
She smiles bitterly as zuko blue flames burn her. Her lasts words are "I didnt know you had it in you".
She awakes unharmed in a small faraway portion of the fire kingdom. Yukon sitting in a small chair hands folded in hus lap. Katarra and Aang healing her surface injuries.
She sits up and tries to leap away before her iron restraints halts her midair.
Not so fast Toph says.
Zuko says "Azula is dead. Start over here." He says nothing else turns and leaves. The rest follows him quietly.
Her provocations and screams ignored by Zuko.
Katarr asks him if hes sure about leaving her like this.
He replies Shes..as harmed by our upbringing as I am. I carry my scar of that wound on my face. The scars she carries in her heart are no worse.
They leave her there. The sound of frustrated weaping is heard in the distance as they fly away.

Ignoring the comics, Zuko “banishes” Azula to find their mother when she’s stable enough to function. She goes on her own little Zuko S1-2 quest, maybe even with Iroh. Azula still has occasional hallucinations (which she hides, not wanting to be locked up again,) and there is an underlying paranoia of whether Zuko’s lead on Ursa was real or just a way to get Azula out of the way, so she flip-flops on trusting Iroh’s advice. On her quest she learns things is humbled and grows as a person yadda yadda and then she’s able to confront Ursa directly when they reunite.

Why would she confront the woman she all but dismissed for the entire show and took pride in terrifying?
Why not confront Ozai?
I never understood this line of reasoning. Even the kast moment mommy issues in the series were an obvious ass pull.
I mean, she's litterally a 1:1 ripoff of Asuka at this point with none of the earned pay off.
No subtle hallucinations of her mother. No precious or bad memories of her before that
Not even her having a keep sake of her she jealously guards.
They just ripped off the character of Asuka whole cloth with this one.

Bumi would be perfect for an Azula banishment story

Well, she’s confronting her own unconscious mommy complex through the experience of psychosis, you see, it’s not really about Ursa or their past but who Azula is, how she got here and who she will choose to be. Reaching her real mom and knowing the difference between the human being and the hallucinations and seeing her true feelings represents closure for Azula whether or not she ends up having an actual relationship to her mom.
The turtleduck bit was actually about both Zuko and Azula, you know.
