I had an idea for a Steven Universe fanfic that I never did anything with. After Pink Diamond "dies" one of the amethyst in her zoo falls in love with and runs away with a girl and shapeshifts a dong onto herself to impregnate the human. The child kills its human mother and the amethyst abandons it and is later shattered when she is found. The child is named Cinnabar. Cinnabar fuses with its father gem shards and begins turning into a miniature cluster. Over the centuries more and more gems go missing out beyond the zoo and eventually the planet the child was abandoned on begins to give off radio waves. Similar to spinel it too learned of Steven and felt it was unfair that he was raised up to be special while Cinnabar was left alone and attacked by every gem it ever met. Cinnabar goes on a rampage and begins attacking different gem outposts, destroys the zoo and starts going to earth. By nw it's a moon-sized fusion, a cluster but controlled by a single intelligence. Unlike every other BBEG Steven faced, Cinnabar would be unwilling to compromise and desired to to see all gems shattered and fused to him.

That Frazie-centric Psychonauts fic from last thread got a sequel last week called Rhombus of Reunions. Only one chapter out, but it was pretty beefy so it took me about a week to finish.
The art is good as it was last time. It was nice seeing Loboto being a loony and threatening villain again after the fandom spent roughly the last decade dollhousing the guy. Raz plays well off of Frazie, and is a fun little bastard, though his flashback scene with Donatella was unexpectedly sad. "Nona" is used well, even if the foreshadowing about her true identity gets laid on a bit thick sometimes.

I started doing fanfiction with AI tools like 2 years ago in order to just entertain myself often finding it so smart and so stupid at the same time but some of the stories got so long I figured might as well share them without me really having a plan on where those stories were going how much I use AI in my fanfic making varies but if I'm actually trying to do a story is seriously I usually use a microphone and everything off to my house for it to get the words right and then have ai do my a medium job like punctuation clean things up a bit and sometimes bounce ideas off of it. It's very earnest and a lot of work and love was put into it to make it emulate the 2d animated cutscenes of the first three games, but the writing of the actual romance could have used a bit of work. Oddly enough, the scenes that most affected me were the ones involving Dr. M and a news clipping that detailed the cruelly ironic way Clockwerk killed Otto van Cooper.

Once you get in, it's pretty simple
Your standard ratings and summary and chapters and all that. There's also stuff like warnings like rape and shit you can add to your work (you can choose to not disclose any).
One of the cool things is you can make tags on the go, including for new fandoms, so you never have to email anyone about shit, just type it out and boom you have it.
It also has optional fields for author's notes at beginning and end, no more having to manually add that stuff into the body text of the doc like on ff.
You can do stuff like add co-creators, gift to specific people, create series and add stories (I use this to have stories have a hub even if the stories are individually not connected enough to be chapters of 1 big story).
There's a bit more, but that's the bulk of it. For the annoyance that tag spam can be, it's simply way better for finding specific shit and being able to have complete control over tags for your posts is a godsend.

been thinking of doing an owl house fic. specifically a role swap AU. i don't really know how the story's going to play out though, i currently just have faint ideas floating around in my noggin. i know i want vee to be the main character instead of luz, and maybe the the dead titan being replaced with a dead collector. everything else just kind of feels up in the air as of now.

i also wanted to add a few drawings to the fic and compose my own little songs for it as well, mostly because i enjoy doing them a lot (albeit more so the latter than the former) and i don't see those things in fanfics very often (if it even happens at all), which is understandable considering it basically doubles the workload you're doing. but if i'm enjoying myself by making those, i don't see why not.

pic related is what i have in mind for vee's design in the story. i imagine due to some circumstances that happen in the story, she hasn't exactly nailed down the shapeshifting thing yet, so she kind of botches her human form. also, i haven't been drawing as consistently as i have in the past, so my bad if the drawing looks a little bad.

Well, here are my favorite RWBY fics to keep the thread going.

1. Origin Story. My favorite RWBY fanfic bar none. An absolutely brutal story for Ruby, but amazing and super interesting. It had been years since I had read a fanfic, from any fandom, that got me to care this damn much. I was enthralled from the get-go. The best Ruby-centric story I’ve ever read.

2. Let Us Be Your Poison. Oh boy, this story has a lot of complaints from me and things that bothered me even though I’m still putting it at number two. There are many grammar/spelling problems, Pyrrha is a little annoying, there’s a lot of over the top cringe and edgy moments at times, it is filled to the brim with preaching over politics and religion, Blake is an absolute cancer of a commie/atheist/redditor and the author is firmly behind her and speaking through her and she is never allowed to be wrong about anything (even though the author tries to lie sometimes and say she is in the sequel). And yet? It’s just so god damn interesting. You can feel the passion and creativity from the author oozing through every chapter. They put so much love, thought, and work into this story and it shows. The societies they set up, the religion, everything. It’s an incredibly engaging story though also incredibly frustrating at times. The character writing for the four main girls is some of the best I’ve ever seen in a fanfic and the story ends with one of the most satisfying grand finales of any fanfic I’ve read. I think the best thing I can say about this story is that I considered dropping it numerous times because of how it was frustrating me but I just plain couldn’t because I had to know what happened with the story and characters. I just couldn’t leave it. I would recommend not reading the sequels though.

3. Arcanum. I talked about this one in a previous fanfic thread. It’s overall a great fic but it really badly fumbles the drama between Ruby and Weiss and it left me disappointed because of that. Ruby and Weiss are such amazing characters in this story, great depth, great development, you can really get behind them and their stories. The fic has some other little problems but I do still highly recommend it. In a way though it’s barely even a fanfic, it’s so much of an AU it’s honestly closer to an original fantasy novel than a RWBY fanfic. Even other AU’s don’t often feel like that, but Arcanum feels like something that could’ve been someone’s actual book if they just changed the names.

4. Red Sky at Night. Really amazing Penny fic, the Nuts and Dolts aspect only comes at the end and isn’t really what I’d say the fic is about. It’s just a really strong story in every avenue. What’s great about it is that it’s not just a great Penny fic, it’s one of the best Ruby and Winter fics I’ve read too.

5. I Can Almost Hear the Hounds. Short. Moving. Perfect.

Relies a bit on meta knowledge of fanfic cliches and tropes of the fandom, but it's otherwise an excellent story about blood (family ties) and power (friendship) and how it doesn't matter how far away you go, things won't really change if you don't change your mind, brah. Aberration by RedXEagl3 was great too. Specially since the author managed to complete the herculean task of updating his fic at a weekly schedule, only taking a break once. Guy wrapped the fic in two years. Thoroughly impressive from a discipline point of view. And the story isn't half bad either, taking a shitty fantasy game and turning it into a fully fledged fantasy story. Good stakes, good progression, good action. Can get a bit too miserable at times but still a worthy read. And it's finished, that is always a huge plus.

Serious question, is writing fanfiction not allowed on Patreon? My stuff gets a good amount of attention. I notice a lot of writers who are big enough make decent money from writing fanfiction, but I also heard that Patreon doesn't allow it.

I know of plenty of authors that have either that or kofi. But iirc, ffnet and ao3 will ban you if you mention that site, so users usually have to work around it.

A little while ago a reader out of the blue gave me a donation basically and it made me look into the whole commission side of things and, yeah, there's a lot of stuff to consider under the hood.

FF and Ao3 both disallow commissions/patreons/ko-fi. FF has 0 moderation so really just protection from links is all they have there (plus the readership is genuinely pretty fucking dead there so good luck trying to get anything of this nature off the ground there).

Ao3 however does look out for this shit and you will get your ass hit for putting links to your patreon/ko-fi anywhere on Ao3 or mention commissions. After looking through the rules about this, the "workaround' or safe way to do this is to link to another account like a Twitter or just a linktree or carrd that includes a link to your patreon/ko-fi, but note it can't just be a link to your patreon/ko-fi, it has to be more than just that ie some real posts or links to your other socials or works. As far as I can tell, this is the safe or approved way of doing things on Ao3. If you ever see people posting about patreon anywhere on Ao3, you can a report them and get them banned and shit.

Oh, and the big no-no is posting like one chapter and keeping the rest on patreon. Simply do not ever do this, even without mentioning patreon on your stuff someone can bring attention of this to Ao3 staff and put a stop to your shit from what I heard. Plus it's just really shitty.

There's a lot more to this in the greater scheme of things beyond Ao3/FF. I'm not sure how places like Wattpad and SB operate with this, they might be more amenable to the idea. On the smut side, I think Literotica makes some people a lotta money, and I did learn that Furaffinity has a lotta native support for patreon/ko-fi built into the site and a big community of writing commissions.

I did all that stuff with my story and most of my readers still apparently didn't see it coming until it was almost directly stated, although some were suspicious. A lot were appropriately peeved at a character being revealed to be a villain and the horrible things she was planning to do. So much so that even after her redemption arc I don't think most of my readers have entirely forgiven her. Which is fair. But yeah, I would drop little hints, make certain lines and things she said be dubious and have multiple meanings if you looked at them, have her attitude be somewhat suspicious at times, etc. At one point she's facing criminals who know her secret and they almost blab on accident, but you can read it as them just being surprised to see her for other reasons.

Nerubian's Journey
Dude wakes up as a spider nest and realizes he's in the Warcraft universe and that he's going to be undead slave if he does nothing. So makes it his life's work to get the kingdom of Azjol-Nerub involved in global politics to avert the War of the Spider and defeat the Lich King. It's a long, expansive fic that tries to take full advantage of the Warcraft setting to the best of its ability and the craziest part is it's actually finished. Shame it all happened before The War Within was announced since that's the expansion that delved more into the Nerubians.

Halfway through the fic, Alexstrasza gives him a blessing of life magic which turned him into a red dragonkin as thanks for manipulating events to thwart her capture by the Dragon Maw Clan. That scene is also one of my favorite tropes in other Warcraft SI fics where you get to see how far the protag can get before higher power notice that you don't belong there.
