I think the change in how the fandom looks happened after the pandemic we had in 2020. The 2020 pandemic significantly changed cartoon and anime fanbases in general. Lockdowns caused an animation viewership boom, fundamentally shifting community demographics and behaviors.

Over the years, these spaces transformed from niche hobbyist groups into massive mainstream online communities. Cartoons like South Park historically have always been about entertainment, but a lot of people in the mainstream cartoon community want cartoons to serve as their therapy sessions.

Hot take: Eric Cartman is the single greatest character in television history because he’s the only one who refuses to pretend the world is fair or that people are good. Everyone else in South Park puts on a moral costume. Then you have Kyle’s self-righteous lectures, while Cartman just says the quiet part loud, speaks his mind, and actually wins half the time (he at least used to).

Modern South Park has become preachy, safe, boring, and self-important; exactly the kind of smug entertainment its creators once mocked.

Classic South Park thrived on chaotic, equal-opportunity offense. It roasted everyone; left, right, celebrities, religions, kids, and its own audience—without pulling punches. Episodes were fast, absurd, and unpredictable, with crude humor serving sharp cultural jabs. The show didn’t care about being “on the right side of history”; it existed to deflate pomposity wherever it appeared.

Stan (often Trey Parker’s avatar) literally says in a recent episode that “South Park sucks now” because “it’s all of this political s***.” The show even acknowledges its own decline, and yet it keeps doing it.

The risks that defined the show (banning episodes, celebrity feuds, network battles) are gone. Instead of wild one-offs that could go anywhere, we get extended Trump-related storylines or cultural issue-of-the-week sermons that feel like every other late-night comedy. Cartman is tamed, the boys’ dynamic diluted, and the humor repetitive. Many viewers call recent episodes “painfully unfunny,” “dour,” or outright boring compared to the show’s prime.

The libertarian-ish edginess of old has given way to something that feels like the “South Park Republicans” era is long dead, replaced by creators who’ve aged into the establishment they once skewered.
