Continuing the storytime of Marvel's 2000s teen heroes, we go from Wisconsin to Los Angeles where five teenagers, and one pre-teen girl, are about to have their lives turned upside down when they find out their parents' dark secret.
I'll be honest, of all the Runaways characters Nico is far and away my least favorite. I get "asian goth" means guys find her hot and girls find her cool visually but honestly I think she's a giant unstable bitch and really unlikable.
>>154102733 I think the first volume of Runaways holds up incredibly well because it's a tightly told and fairly complete story. The twists make sense and the clues are consistent going back to the first issue.
The second volume I feel is weaker because it's more obvious that BKV didn't have things plotted out as much and was winging it a little more. The Whedon stuff isn't good. Volume 3 I feel has ideas that would have been better as a Defenders style book or something and not Runaways, at least under Moore. Immonen's run at the end is abysmal and practically unreadable.
>>154103225 The NYC arc was the best one because the fish out of water approach worked for the characters. I don't care about Victor which is the big problem with volume 2. In general it felt like Vaughan was told to integrate it more into the MU to increase sales.
>>154101796 Personally speaking Gerts my least favorite. I met way too many people like her IRL. Dyed hair, an overeducated smartass, and has to make everything about politics? Hard to believe this was published in 2003.
>>154103785 Absolutely not and pages like this are why. She's mentally unhinged, jumps onto anyone who gives her even the slightest bit of positive attention or validation or really just as a form therapy when she's stressed out and anxious while simultaneously acting as if she's in charge of everyone which tends make her a giant drama magnet.
I honestly think they need to eventually say she has some form of BPD because she comes off as at least mildly borderline. Definite cluster B shit.
>>154103875 When re-reading through all of this I wound up liking Gert a lot more than I expected or originally did. She's mouthy and opinionated but she's also a grounded and a lot less annoying or pushy than you'd expect her type of character to be. I think her and Chase are the real heart of the book and Runaways suffered a lot with her gone.
Doesn't excuse bringing her back as her self-insert though.
>>154103895 completely valid and fair points, but she was like a teenage fantasy come to life when I was reading it at 12-13, the drama is nothing suprising or excessive in these kinds of teen books imo. Real best girl is obviously Gert 's dino Lacey
>>154104050 >>154103348 I like the hints in the early comics that Chase has a crush on Karolina. He had to have been heartbroken when she came out of the closet
>>154101749 >MMO using heroes in-universe That makes sense but I have to wonder about the feasibility. I wonder if the FF have to sell their likeness since they're just people unlike Spidey who can't really make any cash off of it or Cap, who you'd realistically need the US Gov's say to use. Wonder what the over-under is on that kind of stuff.
That's it for today. Next time we're going away form Runaways for a bit to do another series that started at virtually the same time. So it'll be New Mutants #1-4.
Basically for the next week or so I'm going to alternate between Runaways one day and New Mutants the next so both will finish at roughly the same time.
>>154104130 Bro, at various points she's going to jump on Chase, Victor, currently Karolina (Rowell canonizing her fanfiction) and there may be a few others there I'm forgetting.
>>154103304 I came around on Victor after a bit but yeah, he was a bit too hard to accept at first. This dumbass group getting a hand on Ultron's spawn felt like too big a jump. But like I said, I did come around on him after some time. Enough to the point that King bastardizing him annoyed me greatly.
I remember liking this reading it as a teenager, but I'm not liking it now. I'm not sure if it is because of its own merits, or associating the 2000s with Marvel comics I've disliked I've read in the years between.
>>154104537 I think it holds up a lot better than I expected. The big problem I have is that it tries a bit too hard to ape Whedon's tone but seeing as Jemas' ideal of what he wanted from comics was Buffy I guess it makes sense.
>>154103510 The robot head feels familiar, but my first guess doesn't have antennae and seems weird for an American comic to reference, and Bender is farther off in design. Is it from something earlier both are referencing and I'm not culturally aware enough to know?
>>154103957 Could be he's just copying something you see in TV or movies or something where someone cites a Bible verse when they're in an "oh shit I'm about to die" situation. That or he's just more knowledgable about things than you'd expect. Eithe would be on point for him.
>>154105523 >it tries a bit too hard to ape Whedon's tone Whedon really is the worst thing to ever happen to the entertainment media, I blame all the retards who unironically watched that garbage show Buffy
