Mary Jane used to be fun incarnate, and then actual real character work was done where the fun was also a mask for deeper issues that better writers explored and worked with to make her relatable but also fearful of Peter, the commitment and responsibility she was both yearning for but terrified of due to what she saw growing up. Thus compelling drama but also a rock upon which Peter could rely upon when events were feeling too much for him. Peter's greatest champion and a cause for him to crawl out of a grave.

Of course since OMD she's nothing now. She's not a partner. She's not really a person. They still to this day don't know what to do with her, because her natural chemistry is a magnet for Peter. They invent contrived and contradicting reasons to keep her away, but never far enough they can't cash in on her still enduring popularity. A popularity enduring despite a multi-decades character assassination by the same cabal who laugh at the thought of her getting raped and murdered.

She's a useful nothing tool in the BND toybox to sell variety covers and give angst to Peter. The football that Lucy the editor invites fans to run at. Just laugh at the increasing irrelevance of 616 to anything Spider-Man, and wait a few decades more for the gnarled hands of hack writers to finally be pulled off.
