If this was such a huge hit, why didn't it rerun that often after it ended? Other 80s shows like The Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks and Inspector Gadget reran a lot after ending, but surprisingly the OG Transformers didn't.

The fuck are you talking about. It did.
After no more new episodes in 1987, it rerun with new live action front and end sequrnces on reruns in 1988 and 1989.
Went to the sci-fi channel in reruns.
Then returned back to broadcast tv reruns with Generation 2 editing on the reruns in 1993-1995.
Then had a new series in continuity with Beast Wars in 1996.

Only if you squint. BW's G1 backstory takes stuff from the cartoon, the comics, and shit they made the fuck up. BW is a separate, but similar, universe to the G1 cartoon.

This isn't the reason for the G1 cartoon, but the IDW1 comics explain it as "If you've taken command then I have really fucked up, so I better not fuck up."
