Hi anon, super cute spidergirl! If it's not too much trouble, do you mind sharing what your ideation process for designing characters is like? I'm currently trying to come up with a design for my game's lead heroine and I've been trying to prioritize nailing some sense of understanding of her personality (mostly for myself) and ensuring the design properly conveys it. I don't plan for the game to be writing heavy, but the little character interaction it will have I'd like it to at least be endearing and memorable.
While I think it's a fairly good way of approaching the process, I feel like it leaves the more technical side of things in the back seat somewhat.

It's closest to CoC & Flexible Survival with the open world cheats enabled, but will still be pretty different. All content is available from the start. Designed for short game runs and long term replayability, instead of a long chain of linear gated content.

Depending on how often the character is drawn, your #1 priority should be making sure it's easy to reproduce. In the image there all the loose or baggy clothes might be annoying to draw, especially if over a bare skin layer (skintight clothing is easier since you barely have to draw any new lines) but it isn't too bad, especially because there isn't a lot of clothing. It mostly becomes a problem once you have detailed patterns and layers of clothes.
The goggles are definitely a "I like adventuring" sort of item.

Since I can't really give specific suggestions about a character I don't know about, I could at least talk about

For designing a character, I'd say it involves just kinda looking at characters, maybe while you play game or do other things, and taking note of outfits and hairstyles and such. Save it as reference, shove it in the art project.
This often amounts to deciding on themes to stick together, i.e. "demon + sheep" is a classic one. Once you have a combination of themes that differentiates the character you can kinda work with that.
You don't need a combination for a main character who should be more plain and less gimmicky, but Endfield's player character has penguin themes, for example. All the characters in Witch of Mercury are based off of birds (main character is red cardinal)

Maybe I should also add, having an idea of geometric shapes / patterns you want to use might matter. It extends beyond just the player character but part of what gives a game a unique artstyle is by having an idea of the kinds of shapes it uses.
For example, victorian cast iron decor has a lot of spirals, and that can fit onto UI, character design, environment pieces, etc.

I wasn't planning to do a second post but I just remembered some of the basics:
>grayscale the character to check for contrast, contrastingly light/dark areas draw attention
>follow the lines and shapes of the character's body and see if they converge somewhere, because this can draw the viewer's attention to that point (I'd say the posted character's stomach is pointed to right now)
>make the character completely dark so you can see their silhouette. Can you make out distinctive features about the character? Is it clearly them? Is it an interesting shape? I'd especially use that to check if loose glove sleeves are good, because it might work or it might not.
>The silhouette is also good for checking for shape language. Rounded shapes = soft, spikes = dangerous, that kinda thing. Loose clothes might give a free-spirited feeling, perhaps.

The best way to use these is to maybe ignore them until you notice something's wrong with a design and you can't tell why, it may be one of the above. I'm looking at my own silhouettes now and it makes me wanna change things again.

It's the top *visible* community. You can't touch Discord discussions without signing up and joining, and that's where "peer-to-peer info sharing" is really happening these days. Google indexes forums, though, which means complete outsiders can walk in. TFGS is a place where a lot of these games get a start, with positive reception and constructive feedback, but it's niche. F95 is more broad. It provides "normie" exposure from people who stumbled into it looking for "vanilla" stuff and then branch out by gorging on everything else. It's more mellow because broader appeal requires toning things down, where Discord (and TFGS) echo chambers reinforce deepening spirals.

Sorry that I interjected into your conversation, but I was talking in general terms rather than any specific dev. Also 2k is barely a livable wage for one person, might as well live on benefits and neetbux at that point. Not a very strong "it's working for them" argument lol

I'm not a hgame dev so I'm not familiar with the scummy coomer subscription milking ecosystem and I don't particularly want to be, but I know a thing or two about indie game development, did that for over a decade before the war. How important visibility is for a literal nobody, how listening to a few obsessive fanboys can blind you from the bigger picture, how massively impactful bigger platforms are for your success, etc.
And I can say discord being a problem is not limited to hgames. Actively engaging with your discord community (even if they are relatively normal rather than creepy groomers/trannies/whatever freaks you get in porn discords) is at worst harmful to the quality of your work, at best a waste of your time. And hard to do in a manner that retains a shred of your professionalism. It absolutely is too casual of a channel for interacting with internet customers.

For a hgame dev, I would see F95 as an important step (along with smaller communities) in building up reputation and gathering feedback before the steam launch. But it's another community you shouldn't actively engage with (waste of time), and gamedevs generally shouldn't even read feedback addressed directly at them. The real important stuff you have to read between the lines, how players are engaging with your game and what they are talking about among themselves. Whenever someone comes directly at you wishing for changes, they have ulterior motives. The goals of those motives may align with yours, but nevertheless it colors the way they represent their feedback and makes it less direct/honest, in my experience.

That should be relatively easy to fix by adding a simple clothes trait. The developers could make it so that some clothes become translucent when they are wet and other clothes stay opaque when they are wet.
One thing that I don't like is the immediate fainting and losing an hour as soon as stress maxes out. Some locations (such as school and work) should let the player character get to the end of the day and only faint at the end.

I think there already are some clothes that have an anti-transparency trait but if anything it should be the other way around, give a "transparent when wet" trait to only the most thin, light-colored clothes. It's something I've literally never had to think about IRL but somehow in this game almost all clothes turn invisible when it rains

Technically, playing as a futa would provide the most varied futa content (futa on male, male on futa, futa on female, female on futa, futa on futa) that the player character can be involved in. And since I'm playing a futa game, I want the most futa content. But there are so many ways you could take a futa protagonist/a game world where you play as a futa, and not all appeal to me (e.g. hyper-dom futa), so it would depend on the game.

It really depends.
I find that some kinks work better in a format rather than another.

For example, corruption is best enjoyed as a slow burn. It is therefore better implemented in games with narrative arcs. Corruption works best when you get to know the character's initial state and have a corruption progress based on choices. It can work in a simulation style but it is less impactful.

Transformation on the other hand is more about the body alteration without necessity to account for character psyche. It is more interesting in games with customization features and enrich gameplay with mechanics based on the TFs.

Of course both can work together, the point is to answer 1) People on /d/ don't really play the game for the framework but for the substance of the content in priority.

It's the opposite for casual games, people aren't too regarding about the theme or the nature of the content as long as the gameplay is engaging enough.

Side note:
Game design also determines if it attracts people who prefer to self insert or role play.

2) You always want a small number of fleshed out characters regardless of the game design. The depth just isn't going to be the same if you make 3 or 10 key NPCs. Even in sandbox there's a story arc with some substantial chars, like quest givers, foes, etc.

3) I'm not sure I understand, my personal preference leans more toward 2D art because it's less work intensive to produce content for a lot of kinks.

Simulation style game. Not by true preference, but out of necessity. Sim games tend to be sandbox-ish and let me customize the experience to something I like, rather than being stuck with the author's rigid choices. If a narrative game just happened to tickle my fetishes (while also being free of shit I hate), I'd play that too.

Obviously, if the "fleshed out characters" matched my tastes and their content matched my interests, that'd be the right choice. I'd say the real question is about *aesthetics* rather tan 2D vs 3D (Senran Kagura and The Sims are both 3D, yet I can fap to the former while the later makes me puke), but nevermind: Pick the option you're more confident would let you actually release the game with a good amount of content instead of being stuck in a 0.0001 pre-alpha for decades.

Anyways, I don't even know what your game is even gonna be about, whether it'll suit my fetishes or cater to another audience, so all of this is secondary at best.

Since I'm unaware if anyone has spoken about it. Back in 2017 there was a vore game made in rpg maker vx ace called "shrinking game" by TheNinja0 on aryion. It was a tug of war game where you were trying to escape a girl's genitals while she was trying to pull you into her. If she wins you get stuck for a time cycle while you rest, and you see a quick message about what she's doing at the time. The game would cycle through time slots IIRC said slots were morning, noon, evening, night. You were given a chance to escape at each point, save, or rest leading to the next time slot. The gameplay loop boiled down to a sandbox where you get caught by a girl, fight to escape or get caught by her, then leave at a time slot you prefer, or when she's in a location you prefer. That October due to the lack of updates another individual named XenoneX decided to make a spiritual successor in the form of a game called Shink EXP. While that was occurring in 2019 an individual named DevS098 started a game inspired by Shrink EXP called "Tiny Misadventures - The ultimate shrinking game!" Tiny misadventures was planned to be, as is implied by the title, better than all the prior attempts at this genre in rpg maker MV this time. He announced that he will resume fully working on Shrink Island after DEVS was in a more finished state so he could easily make new content. It was picked up by an individual named Overmind42, who soon went to discord, and after a few years announcing he's abandoning development.

SizeMage on the other hand had a multitude of issues. To start with he wanted both a large amount of different features, and he lacked artistic skills. His solution to that was to make the entire game in daz. He continued to use rpg maker MV, but almost every update was a full remake of his game for a long time. After almost a year of this (It might have been 2 i can't quite remember) he finally stopped with the remakes and started working on a consistent framework. His updates were regular unlike every single dev up to this point, but his coding skills were and are still fairly bad with bugs and major glitches occurring regularly with every update. The gameplay centered around you hunting for supplies on a 3 minute timer, while avoiding the girls, some would just kill you, but most would use nonlethal vore options. The struggles were also taking advantage of the battle engine unlike every game up to this point which used events to process the entire combat loop. Along with that was the creation of a fetish system giving you a weakness to particular vore types. By December that year he had put out 2 content updates announced that he wants to use honey select models instead, and went radio silent after that. Those who know him claimed he had died, with minimal other details given.

Next was Into the Tinyverse by IareaGuys in 2024 another demo that was mostly ripped from Shrink EXP before it was abandoned, this one didn't even set up a patron unlike all the others.
Finally we have Tiny Test in 2025, another 3d game, but with a massive amount of girls compared to most of the games that have been released in this genre. Covering all the vore forms from prior games, and a stated focus on unbirth. His updates have been fairly inconsistent, but he has been updating his game enough that it's clear it's still being worked on. The game has a femc like Shrunken life, and has struggles with generics that either game end when you lose, or you get sent back to your base if it was by the faceless women on the map transition map.

I rewatched The Princess Bride recently and I think it influenced the premise. The whole Grandfather reading the story to the kid framing device isn't necessary to the plot but by doing so it asks the audience to take on a more childlike understanding of the way the world works in order to handwave away questions the audience might ask. Peter Falk is there to tell you to sit down, shut up, stop asking questions about what a shrieking eel is or where the fire swamp is located or how the giant life force sucking machine works. I feel like thats honestly what the movie is about, learning to turn of the cynical side of your brain and just enjoy a story for what it is. I kind of want this to be like the porn game equivalent of that. Noti in terms of relevancy, I just means in terms of what I want the overall story to convey. My fav is flexible survival with the open world cheats on. It’s not my favorite game or the best written, but I play it way more than anything else because of that. TiTs by comparison, top tier porn but it’s basically unplayable after your first run. Most of the game is blocked by grinding and quests. I thought the other route of owning colette at every social interaction until she breaks down crying was also done pretty well, although I do agree the finale of the game getting interrupted to reintroduce the day 0/1 plot was kind of lame.
If I had a personal nit to pick it'd probably be that the beggar encounter during the shopping trip was really cool and makes me wish more of the game acknowledged the princess and pauper starting option. Too many of the "eager to keep the role of princess" options just call the protag closeted and ignore that he was starving to death the day before the story started. Some interplay would be nice.

Guy you replied to here, this one in particular gets on my nerves to no end. Madame Delaruthe is my favorite character in the game already and she as exactly, One, scene.
I play the protagonist as a boy who is quite blase about femming out and just wants to survive (and profit), and her scene is one of the absolute best for helping him get comfortable with womaning, yet it's a complete singular anomaly.
And, most of all, I really hate discord

The problem is two-fold. One, you need a feminization game where MC isn't the one being feminized. That isn't a distinction a lot of sites make. Vast majority of TFGS fare and the 'sissification' tag on f95 has MC as the target.

The second is the endpoint of the process. A lot of feminization games treat "sissy" as a stepping stone in the transformation process. The starting point is male (or 'failed male') but the end point could be sissy, shemale, or female. If what you're after is a game that specifically stops at sissy (no breasts, no genital change), you'll have an even harder time finding something that fits your sissification fetish.

Off the top of my head, The Pink Answer (f95, Renpy, AI art) is a recent thing that has MC feminize a single target as the entirety of the game. I didn't play it long enough to find out where it falls on the "endpoint" scale, though.

That game disappointed me so much. It takes 10 hours to load so you think its doing some really complex bullshit to make the perfect session, but if you think about it for 5 seconds, it makes no sense. It should literally be a JSON file with a bunch of settings that gets loaded at each session. There's one character in the middle of an empty room with low detail assets.

Then it comes out that they did the whole thing using visual scripting so it's a complete mess that they have no idea how to fix. A dedicated joi game like that could've been so good.

Pink Answer's F95 thread makes it clear they get transformed into a shemale (shown in the screenshots). Though the reviews say it's low effort AI shovelware
