What the flying fuck is the point of this machine?
Im No tradesman im a computer engineer but even i see how stupid this machine is

Litterally makes no sense at all. A wheel loader or a dozer can do what this machine does but better

the long wheelbase means bumps and uneven areas have far less effect than a relatively short wheelbase implement
if you had ever actually used something like a front end loader or skidsteer you would quickly learn they accel at doing what they are designed for (picking up and loading loose material/moving shit around) and become increasingly annoying the further you stray from that intended task
obviously a giant motor grader is specifically designed to grade a large amount of a roadway width area extremely accurately and quickly

My dad used to love these things. Used to just want to go up and touch one. He was a teacher and would sometimes just ramble on about them. I hate them though since they're the reason he got locked up. It happened when I was young.

When I asked my mom why the cops took dad away she said it was because he touched his 3rd grader.

Graders are awesome for grading roads with a nice crown, cutting ditches, berming dirt up, etc. I love my grader. Also there are a ton of dirt county roads around here that would be in horrible shape if they didn't send a grader around maintaining them constantly.

You do have a grader don't you?

it make flat good
>>
>>2980516
if by fix you mean completely remove then yes, certainly
>>
>>2980516
Fix? Possibly, depending on the damage. Maintain? No. The undercarriage would be toast in no time flat with the amount of miles a grader can cover.

Sounds like some cope a graderlet would come up with... Why don't you tell us the real reason you don't have a grader?
>>
>>2980521
in the age of rtk any machine with firm wheelbase can level a plane to sub inch precission
>>
>>2980539
>firm
You need a long wheelbase to remove the bumps. That's exactly why it looks like that.
>>
>>2980542
why do you think that? the shields height is computer guided on the specified slope and the tracks are behind it on smooth ground.
>>
>>2980542
This. Why do wood planes and jointers have long flat precision surfaces leading up to the blade? Why don't we just use wood chisels for everything? Road graders are exactly like that only for dirt work.

>>2980521
>tell me how a d11 cant fix a road but a grader can

Yes a dozer can fix a bad part of a road like a washout. It will not level an entire 10 mile long county road very well and be a stupid amount of wear on the undercarriage for a job that would be better handled by a grader. And how far away is the dozer from the bad part of the road? 10 miles? 20 miles? You gonna track it there or load it onto a lowboy? Graders have extreme mobility compared to dozers and the new ones will do 40mph quite easily.
>>
>>2980433
look up grader mountain road and then try and find a 3rd world video. they can get a lot of stuff done. the articulation and blade angle it can do its cool

due to long wheel base and fully articulated blade, its just more comfy (fast and cheap) for high volume (distance) light duty precision work.

A dozier that can't tilt its blade 720degs of freedom will have to do several passes to do same thing.

Wait till OP finds out about picrel.
>>

I gotta get my 613B scraper up and running again. Been sitting for quite a few years and has some leaks I need to address. They're a blast to run.

No, he said he's a computer engineer, which means he has no real engineering knowledge and probably didn't even take Statics.

>>2980717
As fast as those things are at getting dirt moved from one place to another on a site, I think we have two of them on our grounds that haven't moved in two years because they're always being serviced.

They have a very specialized application. If you can afford to have equipment sitting idle for that long, you can probably afford to lease it when you need it.

I've worked in and around the construction biz for years and I'm amazed at how many business owners just look for excuses to acquire neat toys and tie up capital. Dozers and loaders have many more uses and are better purchased. But graders excell at the one thing they do.

they are becomming rare. today most road maintendance crews here use fully rigged multi purpose dump trucks.
pic related got a grader blade in the middle, snow blow mount in the front and can accept anything from a salt/sand spreader in the back of a dump truck bucket for road maintendance use
>pmow your route back and forth
>lower grader then scrape and salt/sand your route
in summer time
>using dump bucket lay out fresh gravel on bumpy gravel road
>grade it on the way back
and when no road work is required
>use it as a whatever truck

Got to run graders with scrapers, rough haul roads between your cut and fill will beat the shit out of your machines hitches and slow them down, graders used to smooth the haul road and wow you dont have to bounce the scaper like a monstertruck free style event

Heavy equipment operator here. Graders have their place but it's disappearing. GPS equipment machines have took a lot of their jobs but municipalities love them for maintaining shoulders because you can just drive it to a job instead of requiring a truck to get it there. Plus they can move snow pretty good so they're year round machines.

I love graders bros! I almost scored another Cat 12 grader a couple years back locally for $600 but some other guy barely beat me to it... I was already talking to the lady who wanted it out of her yard on facespace and then my wife got hit by a drunk driver on the hwy so that of course took precedence over my marketplace buying for a couple days... Damn, guess it just wasn't meant to be.

A grader killed my family. It buried them under a mound of gravel and leveled it off so precisely that nobody even realized their corpses were down there until they began to stink, which was initially blamed on the lunches of the drywallers.

This is Cooper. He likes sleeping in on his bed in the garage, naps on his bed in the shop, and borking at all the other dogs in the county while riding on my flatbed pickups. Sometimes he scares the shit out of sketchy people walking in town when I get up close and he borks suddenly and loudly. He also likes to help find baby calves hidden on the prairie. He's a good boi. Possibly the best boi ever...

We seem them often here in winter, removing the top layer of ice from the roads without destroying the road itself.

Cleans up ice and packed snow off from paved roads like nobody's business, shapes unpaved roads nicely. Way faster than using wheel loaders or dozers too, which matters once you start having municipal amounts of roads but few guy's worth of working time.

They can plow snow too.

When I was a small spoiled child playing with my tonka trucks in my sandbox, like OP I would assume, I couldn't figure out what the point of a grader was either, and I was afraid to ask my dad because everything else was so obvious that I felt like the grader should be obvious too.

1967 Austin-western super 300 Detroit Diesel powered grader coming up for auction this weekend... Should I buy it bros?
>>
>>2986356
maybe if it goes for 1/4 of scrap
theres no parts for those anymore and the transmissions and front drive are weak
>>
>>2980433
in brazil they use that machine a lot to "fix" unpaved roads in the countryside. whenever the roads have hundreds of potholes or the rains have eaten the sides away the city sends one of those and a truck carrying dirt, the machine is pretty good at pushing just enough dirt for the job
>>
>>2986430
If everything works on it and it looks as nice in person as it does in the photos I've seen I'll probably bid it up to 5k or so... Then I won't have to road my cat12 grader back and forth between farms...
