I started using a Hardinge HLV-H at work and now I hate my shitty chinesium 8x12. I don't think I'd even be happy with the largest lathe I have room for, which would be something like a 9x19 Grizzly G4000. How do you stop exposure to professional tools from ruining your hobbies?

I have a clone of that 9x19. Skip it. I feel like you are like my twin. My solution is to just sneak in my personal projects at work. The Hardinge is my favorite lathe to run. It is just sweet. We have a Hardinge and a clone, and they're both awesome.

You adjust or keep them separated. Me for example, used to be big into 3d printing. Then i realised the whole better materials meme is an endless rabbit hole, while you can order a fused nylon part for a few bucks online and it will crush your home printed stuff in every metric. Eventually 3d printing makes only sense in the low or very high end.
I now use that knowledge for other stuff. Currently automating my shroom farm. Still lots of tinkering and wife appreciates the results.
