Everything is already from China, but here we discuss the cheap chink shit you see on various sites.
1st rule of /csg/: If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

My CHUWI FreeBook is on the way. For a budget machine the specs are pretty generous.
>Intel Twin Lake N150
>16GB LPDDR5
>512GB PCIe SSD
>2K Display w/ 3:2 Aspect Ratio
As long as I don't get hit with the quality control issues I'll be throwing Linux on it. The battery is shit but whatever. If it doesn't work out I'll just get yet another used ThinkPad.

>4x4 USB 3.0 Switcher
By the time it arrived I do not even need it anymore lol
>meme keycaps x2
Double shot, supposedly PBT, look and feel extremely cheap
Perfect to fuck around and maybe dremel something compatible with Tex Shinobi 0.75u
>Motherboard and sata power cables
Seasonic-compatible, looks fine, very soft and flexible, perfect length to arrange in my case
Will double check motherboard cable pinout just in case
>sata data cables
Been using these thin "naked" cables in all my builds for years, never had any issues
>screwdriver and pliers
Why do I even keep buying ugreen trash. Screwdriver might be okay but pliers feel like they will break on first use

it has vesa, not sure about the range but i think it's 48-100/120hz
i returned it and ordered the 120hz which at the time of my initial post wasn't yet available or i somehow missed it (it cost about the same with sale coupons+some credits). ghosting is alright, certainly not the best premium gayming monitor, but it's like 1/5 of the price. i didn't notice any fucked up backlight, it looked better than 2 of my other IPS monitors but they are old office dells. i was hesitant to return it as it came with perfect pixels so it's always a risk, but i decided i want that extra 20hz, especially for no cost increase.
my 120hz unit should arrive next week so i'll post an update

>Looking for a kitchen scale want usb c rechargeable but not too many options any idea's /csg/bros?
Any reason for USB-C recharge beeing needed?
My advice is getting one that runs off AAA batteries rather than coin cells. Cheaper and last longer, plus you can always just pop some in to replace it (more likely to be at hand than a coin cell), and you'll have to do that like once a year anyways.
Anyways, I got picrel, which does support USB-C charging (but also AAA batteries - you need to put rechargeable ones in to use the USB-C charging, ot you can just use normal AAA)
>>
>>108560296
>>108560130
Reason I didn't link it is the listing is down, but I'm pretty sure these cheap ones all use the same load cell anyways.

>well that's not suspicious at all
>when I first turned on the box it granted me a shell with adb, root, no questions asked
>later attempts bizarre shell where only some commands work, keep trying to inject other commands and failing
>figure out that system updater app has killed the adb server and spawned a fake one to listen on port 5555
>force stop the system updater app and clear it's data, restart, disable it with adb
>now I have real adb and root again
It's almost 5AM. This is what I'm doing with my life.

You know the rhyme
Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime, that's why I shit on company time?
Similarly:
Boss doesn't get it, doesn't value my time, that's why I buy expensive hardware on the company's dime.
Half of "professional" hardware equipment survives because man hours are very expensive, so you just buy some overpriced shit with the company card to save yourself some headaches.
>>
>>108560768
In better times we were getting much better stuff for lower prices. But you know the state of the market right now. Almost double the price with few options to choose from so I'm pocketing less off of this. The squeeze isn't just because of the ram shortage etc. Oil crisis has hit my employer as well. It sucks ass but at least I earned it this time.

Nvm if you get to pocket the excess then what you're doing is the right move.
Often when the boss says to just buy it with company funds, you don't get to keep what you save, so there's literally 0 incentive there and 5 AM does not sound like tracked overtime, so I wouldn't do that to myself. In your case it makes sense then. Godspeed anon.
>>108561061
Fair enough. I only tried it once before moving the rechargeable AAAs to a more taxing use, but it worked just fine. Gotta be a little more careful though to not get water or dirt in the port then, rather than just plugging it as I did.

That's one of those questions where it really depends on your usecase and expectations.
"alright" for some people is "horrific" to others.
If you just mean discord calls/teams calls/business stuff/casual stuff, the cheapest you'll get away that's decent is a generic lapel mic.
Something that'll be more than enough for your usecase would be one of the fifine USB mics, they have a okay capsule and are plug and play.
A step up for videos/content creation a fifine will be your sort of bottom acceptable entry, but upwards there's infinite room for spending money for diminishing returns should you want that.
You sound like it's more of a "I'd like to sound good but nothing studio/audiophile/creator level" - so a fifine mic it is.

>>108565355
https://voca.ro/19BaX2lDLGBC
Recorded on a cheap fifine mic. Not a great showcase because the audio I'm playing is from my phone so the phone speakers are actually the limiting factor, but even then you can see it's more than enough for casual use. At ~1/3rd max gain from a distance of ~45 cm (which is the distance I have it usually at so it's not near my mouth or annoying me)

Kek, after 10+ years of using it Ali asked me for age verification to buy a fuckin' snap-off knife. And to add insult to injury, they want me to send my personal data to an israeli company. I guess I'm not buying anything requiring age verification from there - they can kindly o fuck themselves.
>>
>>
>>
>>108565690
Same here desu.
I haven't had the age verification crap yet, but I've seen anons post about it and I'm european, so it's just a question of time I suppose.
I mean ultimately you pay on ali with digital money - so they already know everything about you and your money if they want to, but it feels weird regardless.
Does the israeli verification thingy say it saves your data or can you get by with a fake passport/stock images? Either way probably not worth a ban.
>>
>>108565705
>I'm european
I'm in Poland. As for the thingie, it asked for access to my camera to take a selfie (both on phone and on laptop), I denied and didn't do anything further. Then I just checked details of the company delivering that ID service and yep, israeli.
>>
>>108565727
I'm german, so thank you for the warning based eurobro.
If it happens in poland it's just a question of time before I get it as a germansk peasant.
Will probably try to figure out a workaround (or skip those items) when it happens, depending on how widespread it is.

Keycaps brand is XVX. The only actual japanese keycaps I could find in white on black, or any dart tones at all.
The set cost $10 after coupons - less than just the 4.5U spacebar from a reputabe european store.
Legends on alphabet keys look good even with rounded corners, but smaller texts on modifiers appear blurry.
Note that if you just want a weeb set to use with normal English layout you'd need another set for numbers/symbols, japanese are all different.

Genuinely better than expected.
- Everything works out of the box on Fedora 44 Beta.
- Display is excellent for the price. 2.5K (not 2K), 3:2 aspect ratio, functional touchscreen, 60Hz refresh rate.
- Build quality is surprisingly good for a sub-$400 laptop. Feels more premium than the similarly priced e-waste you'd get from a Western vendor.
- Keyboard is nice to type on. Keys are sized generously for a 13.5" laptop. Require a fair bit of force to press, which I prefer.
- Speakers are tolerable; wouldn't use them to listen to music but perfectly fine for meetings, coursework, etc.
- Same for the webcam. Not good (1MP 720p) but fine if you just need to exist in a Zoom call.
- 16GB of LPDDR5 is acceptable for the price. 512GB PCIe SSD is slow but can be replaced easily.
- CPU is a big weakness. The N150 is fundamentally just a slow chip, and it's meant to be.
- You'd be lucky to get 5 hours of battery life out of this thing (especially on Linux), but with a small battery capacity you can get multiple charges from a powerbank if you carry one around anyways.
tl;dr - not e-waste but you're probably better off buying a used ThinkPad anyways, I just wanted to try something new. I'll probably get good use out of it though.

NTA, but unless you switched accounts in that time it's more likely you're not looking for the right keywords.
I can easily search for stuff from 2021 still and I suspect the only reason I can't go further is because that was around the time I had lost my password to an old account and made a new one.

Oh and before you're confused or think that his project is too complex: Just don't copy all his shit. Watch it, listen to the reasons for the steps (shock absorption, shielding, interference) and then decide if you need that. 70% of the project is the housing, so just skip that and put it in another cheaper mic housing or make your own and you can skip all that effort. Another 20% is due to the amp circuit, so if you have an interface or similar you can skip that part too.

>>woodworking clamps for my work bench dog holes
> Intredastng. I'll be building a workbench soon (2 more weeks). Are you happy with yours?
They’re quite OK. Quality is a tad lower than my made in Vietnam T-Track Festools (which aren’t that expensive, to be fair) but their plastic handles are easier to grip than the wooden ones with the nice Festool logo. But unlike those Festool T-Track ones (which I also got as Bosch ones where I’m convinced that they’re from the same Vietnam factory) I haven’t yet found dog hole clamps locally for affordable.
The horizontal clamps are meh. The red one has a steel screw directly into aluminum, which isn’t good for longevity, plus it sheds the chrome plating from the screws all the time, which could cause problems when your doing fine surface sanding. But they work.
The plastic one is a cheap 3D print with not a lot of travel but it works too, so meh.
You really should built that workbench anon! Mine really improved my options.

I haven't even considered buying a cheap tablet for a decade or so, but I'm thinking it might be nice to have one for watching youtube or some home server tinkering type shit.
Anyone have any experience with cheap octa core tablets? Do they play youtube or other video back smoothly? Are they full of malware that will attack my router? I feel like they should perform well but software bloat has gotten fucking insane.
>>

Most of the current TV boxes aren't that much better than the first Mi box even though it came out almost 10 years ago as they are still using arm a5x cores for them, which is noticeable slow
Try doing a factory reset and using adb to do a lobotomy on that thing, I like to use adb app control for that, pro tip, install a custom launcher before getting rid of the default one
If still considered slow an apple tv 4k is a great option, just wait for the rumored a17 model to come out

I can hear the mic peaking as I read that post.
My condolences anon. Bring a stab proof west. That just means they'll use the acid attack method, but at least you don't go in the statistics as yet another unloicenced butterknife death resulting in further legislation.

>octa core
code for 8 shit cores with performance rivaling a pentium 4. It will lag, but it will probably also play videos just fine. The software will most likely be ass too.
I got a lelnopo xiaoxin pro, the hardware is decent but they never fixed the buggy ass software and there's no community support whatsoever for it.

Get a used iPad.
Android, or worse, windows, isn’t suitable for tablet use. The only OS taking tablets seriously is iOS. Apparently, you can now do real work on them (if you’re happy living in a gilden cage) but I don’t know why you would. They’re good for three things:
>reading and annotating PDFs (think scientific papers, budget in the pencil!)
>drawing (budget in the pencil, some paid software maybe and a more expensive model)
>media consumption (no system wide ads blocker! Brave works however, I’m running a non-pro iPad from, uh, 2020 and I don’t notice any issues watching YouTube or other slop, so get an old refurbed one and have a much better device than a “current” android shitpad
>>
>>
>>108596433
don't be retarded android does media as well if not better, and usually for less money too.
I got >>108596290 for like $150 and its screen is on the level of an ipad air, if I had gone for an ipad I would've only been able to afford a base model and base models' screens suck ass.
Not to mention more decoders, less software restrictions and more modded apps. Even if you're just gonna use it for youtube sideloading revanced is easier than dealing with ios sideloading.
You can also find oled models for much less.
>drawing
fine if you get a samsung, actually they pioneered this shit

Some stuff arrived:
>Polarized sunglasses with movable polarization - 6€
These are kind of dope. Metal frame and each eye has two polarized panes. By rotating them you can make the grids match up or not and thus go from light (left lens in the pic) to dark (right lens in the pic). Basically sunglasses you can set the brightness with IRL.
They do make me look like a lesbian steampunk oddball though, so not for public use.
>Thermal printer - 11€
Works. Uses a virus app that I dutifully installed like the good gwailo I am. Jury is still out on the quality of the prints, will discuss in a second post more. Picrel shows some test prints at different settings, both of objects that these printers usually are good at (architecture) and stuff they absolutely are not (tree in park)
>Cheap straight edge razor that uses disposable blades - 1€
I wanted to try it out over my safety razor, this is the cheapest way to do so.
>Some thermal paper labels 2€/280pcs
Seems to be what I ordered. No notes.
>The Great Wave off Kanagawa patch
Quality is okay, it's bigger than expected, a bit more silver than I'd like. I got it for free to get to 6 items, so I'm fine with it.
>Cheap Sm58 clone capsule 1€
I want it for a DIY project. I just expect it to not be high quality audio, but I'm interested if it's usable audio at least.
>3.5mm to 6.5mm TRS with left and right channel cable 3€
Just a way to connect the output of my Behringer UMC202 audio interface to my AMP so I can use it as speakers for my PC when people are over (I only use headphones myself, which isn't great for guests).

Here's a comparison of the image prints. The photo is one I took of a cathedral in Strasbourg. I find that these thermal printers excel at higher contrast imagery, so architecture especially. Not so much at people or faces.
Left is a print I did with a kids camera, that is a small camera that includes a thermal printer inside.
Right is the same picture I printed with the new portable thermal printer.
I'm not sure how to feel about it. Technically/Objectively the right image is more detailed and higher quality, but artistically/stylistically I prefer the left. It looks more like old photos. Granted it may be that the motif isn't well chosen because the complex architecture of the cathedral makes it look mega aliased, but I don't have most other motifs to compare 1:1 since those are on the camera and not my phone.
On the upside, printing a photo taken by phone on the camera is a pain in the ass. I wrote an actual code script that spoofs the file header and does some preprocessing to get the camera to read and print the image, while printing with the new printer is as simple as clicking print on the app. It also means I have the full quality pic still on my phone rather than a 620p image on the camera. It also prints MUCH slower, like a third the speed than the camera. I tried different settings but sadly the choice is either slow and detailed or fast and then it looks like a edge filter is applied. The kids camera could print fast for the mid detail image on the left, or even faster for a dithered version, without the strange filtering.
I'm happy with it for now, but I'll have to experiment a bit more.

Any recommendations for an SD card reader? The shitty USB drive style reader that came with my 3D printer is dying.
>>
>>
>>108603462
If you have your printer in the same room as your PC you should look into just connecting it via USB if it allows that, it works surprisingly well. Once I realized that I could finally stop having to manually move the SD card in my old ender 3. Thankfully my newer Bambu one doesn't have that issue.
I've bought 3 micro SD readers (Assuming you mean micro SD) over the years and all of them worked, so just get one in the form factor you prefer, I doubt it'll cause you issues.

Not exactly "cheap china shit" but I did buy a Xiaomi Smart Watch last week. S4 41mm. I've been liking it a lot, though I wish there was an option to fine-tune how often it checks my blood oxygen while sleeping.

As long as it has shielding they will be pretty much the same.
If you're a music molester (audiophile), you can either get scammed for cables made of or plated in various expensive alloys or metals (worthless), or use a cable with extremely low mass to reach better isolation (useless except very rare edge cases). The former I'm sure you can find on ali, but it won't make a difference.

Any stationery bros? I enjoy heavy-ish mostly metal mechanical pencils and I'm looking for a cheap (at most 15USD with coins) ballpoint pen.
I've seen lots of pens, like the Uni Jetstream, that look good but then I see that they use proprietary refills that are simply unavailable in my country or at an exorbitant price and I'm not willing to wait a chink in the other side of the planet to ship me fucking ink refills.
I don't care about the "experience" or how superior whatever ink combination is, I'm completely satisfied with Faber Castell Triluxes, I just want a metal body with a knurled grip just like my mechanical pencils (PG500, PG1000 and a redcircle 600) and if possible a click mechanism so the ink doesn't dry as fast.
I don't think people sell "metal pen bodies that you can chuck bic refills inside" so I'd be happy with something compatible with those parker g2 refills because those are available and cheap in my country.

>Are the sensors accurate?
I don't have a more expensive or accurate blood oxygen/heart rate/skin temp measuring device to base off of as a reference, but I do own an iPhone and for some reason iPhone always overcounts my step count. Like Xiaomi's Mi Fitness would say 10K steps but iPhone would say it's 13K despite the fact that I always keep both connected and synced via bluetooth.
>How is it?
Overall I like it. Obviously would pair best with a Xiaomi phone but even an iPhone works well. The screen is only 60Hz though, which is very noticeable when Apple Watch screens are of higher refresh rates and feel noticeably smoother.

Goldenfir ssd with less than 200 GB written just died on me. I can't dispute because I bought it last year, I only tested it superficially, it seemed to be ok, but now that I started using it, it turned out to be absolute garbage.
What bothers me the most is that I was so glad I bought it before prices skyrocketed, it thought I had been lucky for once buying in advance, but no, now I'll have to buy a ridiculously overpriced disk anyway, and I lost the money from the old one on top of it. Bloody hell.
No that it matters because at the end of the day reliability seems completely random, but an older XrayDisk that I bought two years ago and I've been abusing extensively is still working fine.

Does it track sleep reliably?
I have a cheap shit Aurafit. It tracks sleep about 50% of the time. Even then the start and end are off by hours. Half the time it tracks no sleep at all. Other times I can be gooning at 2AM and it counts that as deep sleep. I'm pretty sure it's shit coded to assume overnight is sleepy hours, but then fails badly at that even.
The step counter is almost exact 50% of what my iphone counts.
The app is bad too. The charts are in china time. So daily metrics are pain in the ass to use. They did eventually localize heartrate chart but not the other charts. You just know it's spaghetti coded.
Also the random reboots every day.

Thanks for the input. I ended up going with the active 2 sapphire glass, however, since it suddenly went on a flash sale and I got it for 80 USD. What are some things you don't understand why the chinks haven't made copies of yet?
The Apple magic trackpad is the only decent wireless trackpad and I am sure the chinks could copy it and sell it for 50% of what Apple does and still make a nice profit. They just haven't for some reason. I have been waiting on them to do so for like 15 years at this point. All other wireless trackpads suck.

My sincerest condolences anon. From my experience Aliexpress has slightly more high quality items than temu, but crucially they are neither "50€ shipping on top" better and for most of the cheaper generic slop you buy really temu and ali don't make much difference. It's the same stuff pretty much.

How bad will some cheapo, random bot off AliExpress be?
Will it send all my data to the CCP or will it be an old school offline bot that bumps about randomly, hoping to cover the whole floor that way?
Or is there even some that have some FoSS firmware available?
