random shit to talk about: anyone else shares devices with others? i let my cousin play on my laptop, he recently came from switzerland to sleep over for a week, i let him log in to his steam and install his games (our tastes in games differ). safe to say it's his first exposure to linux :^). another bizarre fact is that he literally only recently discovered how to roll an iso to a usb stick after i was helping him troubleshoot his windows not booting up. it's bizarre because how the fuck are you an avid gamer when you don't know how to maintain your battlestation in terms of software?

i'm more on the vista side of design, probably because i grew up with vista themes for xp. there's a good 2000 recreation for linux too, it's called ice2k.sys, for icewm.

the terminal transparency can be achieved on windows. i was recreating something called glasscmd, back in the day people were fuckers for full glass setups, which were incredibly impractical in hindsight, but damn did they look cool. personally, i don't want to mislead people into actually thinking that this is windows, especially normies who may end up using my laptop, i'd personally switch every windows reference to arch linux's.

Desktop hopped back to Trinity on Devuan. I think I'll stay on it. Last time I used TDE I tried bending it into a pseudo-Unity experience. While it might be lacking in some areas, you'd be surprised the kind of software is in their repos. It's a complete user experience. And I find myself actually wanting to be productive instead of compiling obscure software to band-aid a modern desktop together.

It looked universally themed. But I now see you chose KDE applications that the theme would apply to. Kvantum allows you to theme applications, so every application, whether part of KDE or not, will have the same theme.

are distro hoppers utterly jobless or just pretending to use their linux full time? setting everything up properly takes ages. constantly wiping, setting up, rewiping, etc. would render your PC unusable for most of that time. maybe it's easy for them to do that because they literally only install a browser and nothing else to shitpost on 4chan

it's really not that hard to install it and get your programs, sign into a few things. you can easily do it in your spare time if you want to. personally i dont distrohop. some people are just quick at typing and setting things up. if you have like 30wpm speed or some shit and you peck at your computer i can see it being agonizing hours to set up an OS. for others it'll be done well before opening the oven for dinner to cool off

I get it, but also I would say there is nothing wrong with just admiring the geometric aspects, like symmetry, self-similarity, etc of such objects.
There's a video where a professor says, math objects could also be regarded as some sort of art, but that's in German, so don't know if that was useful, besides he's just some old dude, who knows if he's right

Conceptually, it's not that hard to preserve your data either by having a separate /home drive or copying .config + password manager / secrets + list of programs you need.
However, since I use my computer for work I dread distrohopping even though I have a second nvme to test with. I've had a close call before where an installer only showed nvme0n1 and nvme1n1 and they had switch due to me moving the order in the BIOS or something. Thankfully I was autistic enough to exit out of the installer and do a custom install where I noticed the issue.
I just use VMs most of the time after making a script that autocreates them exactly like I want them (because VirtualMachineManager's GUI is annoying). Unfortunately, using a Distro/OS in a Virtual Machine is like sex with a condom. Just isn't the same. So I'm in the process of distrohopping now.

There is a surprising amount of software in the @testing repos, so it's actually fairly viable for daily use if you figure out how to handle glibc only programs. Also, it's pretty lightweight in my experience, though it might depend on if you start replacing parts or not. I keep it as close to default as possible, but I also don't use it as a daily driver. I'll be trying it again on my main computer at some point, so next time I see someone ask I might have more info.

after months of fighting it I feel like I'm finally in a comfortable spot. Unfortunately, there are still times when some software is either missing and requires a ton of work to package or it's outdated. This alone causes enough friction to frustrate me when I'm already busy and just want to get shit done. Don't get me started on GTK/Qt theming. Yes, even with Stylix it just doesn't work all the time. My Gwenview is still stuck in a half-white theme and fucked font colors. Flatpaks and some GTK applications are missing half the fucking icons. And of course, these issues either go unfixed or undocumented. I really want to love NixOS, but this shit is infuriating.

Copy paste issues come from different package types last I used Wayland.
Wayland screenshare issue were resolved quite awhile ago. If you're referring to Discord, last I used Wayland a year and a half ago, you need to specifically use Discord Canary.
Other than that I've been waiting on either Cosmic to be actually stable, or Cinammon Wayland to be in a usable state.

I just need a computer for mail, ssh, and PDFs (and some other misc stuff like IRC and media). I also don't post here very often - webpositive is fine for lurking. For the web (banking/shopping/etc) I just do it on android. But I do have a desktop running Debian that I use for FreeCAD.

>Bare metal? Is there a wine fork or something for vidya?
Yeah, it's a Sony VGN-NR11Z. But with an old Intel SSD. There is a wine fork, but it's not fantastic. There's also a version called "BoxedWine" that emulates linux syscalls, but that isn't great either. Unless you're only planning on playing DOS, ScummVM, emulators, or open source re-implementations like VCMI and DevilutionX, I wouldn't suggest it. Haiku will likely never be good for games.

nuh uh, you're referring to the desktop environment, linux mint has different desktop environment flavours (xfce and mate, which both sort in a similar manner) but the most popular pick is the main one, being cinnamon
either way, linux mint users are mostly windows refugees, personally i don't mind relishing in a chaotic desktop, at some point in my life my desktop was filled above and beyond because i was using it as a downloads folder and refused to delete anything, i guess the fact that then i had a 1366x768 display contributed to the overflow

anyone use fvwm? i'm tearing my hair out trying to figure out why some steam games won't get recognized as "fullscreen". borderless fullscreen games always get pulled into windowed mode and i have to manually set them in game to go fullscreen every time i launch them. it's infuriating. and then they won't respect alt-tab at all, they completely take all focus. this does not happen with regular fullscreen. i'm honestly considering nuking my installation and going to a more normie window manager that isn't 30 fucking years old. this simply can't be worth the aesthetic.
>>
>>108598836
are you using 2.6 or 3? iirc, it has something to do with how a program (steam in this case) tries to send titlebar info, and the fix is to have fvwm run the program without a titlebar. Use FvwmIdent to get the window class of the game and use
Style Class !title
>>
>>108599530
i'm using 2.6. i use these settings alreadyStyle "steam" NoTitle, PositionPlacement center
Style "steam_app_0" NoTitle, !Borders, !Handles, PositionPlacement center
no matter what, it takes my taskbar/panels struts into account and shrinks the window around the struts. to be clear, this doesn't happen on all fullscreen games, just borderless fullscreen from what i can wager. ie. firefox fullscreen just goes into fullscreen normally.

As in, if these effects are enabled and my brightness is low (or not 100%) they will display as brighter than the rest of the physical screen. As if those areas are unaffected by my brightness setting.

how's hybrid mode on Linux Mint? It's broken on my system. I have no idea what I did, but after a BIOS update my Nvidia driver was blacklisted anytime I switched to hybrid mode. Now I'm stuck on discrete mode forever...

if Windows 11 looked like this OOTB, minus your calender, I would maybe use it.

>trinity for me is a time capsule, i relish in the time capsule, despite of the fact that it is unstable, i came to adore it
I have a unique philosophy when it comes to tech. I believe that post Y2K/"Frutiger Aero" development has been sideways, hence despite hardware getting better it's negated by poorly optimized and bloated software. From my perspective Trinity is just an attempt to keep the baseline working for modern applications.

>can you play vidya well on void?
absolutely. you do have to tinker a bit sometimes, especially with older titles, but i had to do that on arch too. ge-proton smooths over a lot of buggy behavior. otherwise it just werks

I keep coming back to Subtle over and over. It's not available on pacman or aur anymore but you can still clone the mirror and build it yourself!

>anyone else shares devices with others?
Not for nearly 20 years now. I bought my first self-owned PC in the late 2000s and immediately stopped using the family desktop and laptop; it was a cheapo Vista piece of crap (it was basically a mini-tower made with midgrade laptop parts) with peripherals scavenged from school and my dad's job, but I could emulate SM64 hacks just fine (for N64 emulation standards of the time anyway) and watch Youtube/browse forums, which was enough to keep me happy.
