Why can't I willingly commit to learning a new PC OS?

Straight talk - it's a tough thing to do. And a little bit scary. You kind of have to throw yourself into the deep end and embrace sink or swim.
I started out with FreeBSD back around 2010. Why FreeBSD? Because it it's simple (not simple as in "easy", but simple as in cleanly engineered code and not so many moving parts) and, most important, it has a handbook. I just worked through the handbook, learning shit I would have never bothered to learn about as I went.
But FreeBSD doesn't support so many devices and was a headache. So I switched to Linux after that. And it wasn't a 1:1 move but I had the advantage of knowing exactly *what* I needed to look up how to do instead of stumbling around in the dark. That was key.
I don't use FreeBSD anymore, nor would I except as a server, but I really think it's a solid way to dive into the deep end.

Which OS do you know?
Which OS do you want to know?
What do you think you need to know about the OS that is preventing you making the switch?
