Why don't normies switch?

Normies are cattle. They will switch when their friends all switch. I will, one of these days, have my mom come up to me and ask how she can install linux on her computer, because she heard about it from somebody and wants to join in. If there is an instant where linux switches from harder to easier than windows for the average normie, they will not immediately thereafter switch en masse; there will be a delay of at least ten years as the news percolates through the normie sphere. I posit that that moment is already behind us.

Linux updates:
- happen in the background while you use your programs
- only happen when you request them, not on their own
- do not force you to restart your computer immediately, rather you can finish your work and restart at your leisure

I switched my girlfriend to mint after she complained about windows. literally 0 mint complaints. she just watches social media anyway.

>>

because desktop linux is extremely unreliable, essentially an afterthought tacked on top of what linux was intended for
windows is built from the ground up as a consumer desktop os
i like linux but as a desktop experience windows is much more comfy

That's the userspace.
But the kernelspace is getting worse now too. Or rather, it's always been shit, but these days the previous shit is actively getting harmful.
As a not-aside, why is it that people always confuse Linux with its userspace bullshit, when the kernelspace has so much more to complain about?

there's nothing wrong with flatpaks and appimages, you can completely avoid it and if you're on a semi competent distro the maintainers will give you native versions
snaps aren't caused by influx of users
>>
>>108646473
The implicit contract is normies do what they're told, and in return they are entitled to endlessly bitch about everything. They have not been told to use Linux, so they won't. Doing something you're not told to do is scary, can't have that either.
The real redpill is normies don't mind being forced off a Zoom "meeting" because their organization's "security policy" required a Dell BIOS update for their 9 year old laptop out of the blue.
in fact, it's a win-win-win because they'll have more personal "content" they can be dramatic about, and they also now have license to be salty with corporate IT droids for about three weeks until everyone forgets.

literally never happened to me
maybe stop using Home editions of Windows
>>you type sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade when you have the time to do so
yeah well on linux there's no software to do work with so you have all the time in the world to update
not like you can even do anything other than just run update commands

>Flatpaks, appimages & snaps
Does that not make Linux better for everyone?
Before Flatpaks and Appimages, you had to hope the devs packaged for your distro or your day would have gotten harder. If you were on a Debian system and the developer only packaged for RPM or you were on a RedHat-based system and the developer only packaged for DEB, or you were on some obscure distro that didn't use either, you were in for some frustration.
Now you can use Flatpak on distros like Slackware and everything should be compatible without having to worry about the packaging stuff.

Yes, they are a fundamentally problematic, to many options and the sandboxing fucking sucks for normal users, this is a very complex way of solving an issue while creating more issues which could be solved with tarballs and a package manager for it and better development practices.

You faggots are never happy with anything. Nothing's ever good enough for you. Always changing the goalposts like a windsock.
This is why we can't have nice things.

Because linux is such a massive 30 year fuckup that it never became as intuitive as windows fucking 95...
Digest that for a moment. For 30 years people have used windows despite hating the direction it was going and the linux community still lost. Absolutely abhorrent performance, nasty.
Scrap the idea of linux. Someone make a fucking windows clone, fire the react os cucks, those fucking cowards.

I'm not a heavy linux user and would put linux on an older relative or younger relatives computer for just browsing and stuff. But even I find it lunacy when trying to do anything complicated. Browsing/browser based games... fine, emails fine... anything else and you filter out normies.

>literally never happened to me
Me neither. I hear this all the time. I was even using Home until 10 had it's security cut off and now I'm on 10 iot enterprise ltsc.
Windows always asks me to either schedule an update or updates when I shut down or restart. So all these people complaining their computer just shut down and started updating? That's just boomer tier gobbledygook to me. It simply never happened. The same way their password never magically changed itself for the 10th time.

he's gonna complain about all the tardwrangling and forced standardization that freedesktop has done over the last 20 years to have any semblance of intercompatibility amongst desktop environments and file browsers with things like XDG, dbus, pulseaudio, .desktop files acting like window shortcuts, .thumbnailer files to finally solve the issue of thumbnails in the file picker, etc etc.

switch to what??
do you think that normies know anything???
my brother in †™,
normies eat literally plastic food,
they bathe themselves with forever chemicals,
they sit on a couch all day long watching brain-rotting goyslop tv,
they are fat,
take a handful of meds every day,
they doomscroll on tiktok and instagram for hours,
they produce nothing of value, have no creativity.
and then you ask...
>Why do le normies not use Linux?
I get it, I am on arch and only arch since 2018,
but I am not crazy, thinking that normies can just change like that.
normies are normies,
they will always be normies,
so who fucking cares, fuck them, fuck them all

mental retardation
>seeing bar move slowly with no description and fail for no discernable reason in windows is good!
>seeing bar fail for a clearly defined reason in the terminal (which you don't need to even look at during updates in almost every distro) is bad!
There is nothing more frustrating than simply not being told what the error you're having is, and every windows error/problem just spits out a random code that can mean 50 different things that also just leads to microsoft AI forum responses that don't solve the problem when you google it. Meanwhile Linux terminal outputs basically just fucking tell you (or an AI model) exactly what the issue is and most times how to fix it too. ANY opposition to clear and concise worded error outputs should be met with ridicule.

You forgot linux updates being near instant and it won't take extra time for your PC to shut down or reboot.
"muh please before turning off / for your PC to start" is exclusively a Windows thing and the reason is that this shitty OS doesn't allow removing or replacing a file that's open by another process.

People are just scared of change, like little baby ducks they just follow what they know.
Everytime I use Windows its like 10x worse than it was the last time I used it, I setup my rog ally and it was a complete nightmare it had to reboot like 5 times and the entire screen and taskbar was filled with bloatware and the browser immedietly shows you ads. Idk how Windows users put up with it, debloating is also a timesink and the next time you update you get more random bloat again

The normies should stay contained in their cattle pens as long as possible it's better that way, furthermore there's probably no point in the enshittification process where even 20% of normies will ditch microsoft or apple

Why do Linuxfags care so much about what OS people use all the time?
>>
>>
>>
I'm using all the big three, linux, macOS and Windows.
Most people don't love OSes, hell, they don't love computers. They need to get some work done and that's it. Or they want some entertainment and that's about it. So a time investment that means "you have to learn how to use this OS again" is already a filter for a lot of people. That is without getting into the details of compatibility or performance or stability or anything like that. You can remove Linux out of the equation, get Windows veteran users to try macOS or viceversa, they'll waste a lot of time trying to adapt.
So now give them linux which is not polished, not commercial, nobody gets paid to get your hardware to "just work" to its full capacity. All you get is a bunch of open source alternatives that don't work the same or have a clunky UI with everything in a different place than what you're accustomed to. You gotta use your brain a lot more with commands instead of buttons you click on, scripts instead of graphical tools. That throws off a lot of people. What /g/ fails to understand is that not everyone is or wants to become a programmer or a coder ever in their miserable lives.

The simple fact that you have to go and remove your Windows and install Linux makes it absolutely impossible for all normies, and even most people who would be able to do it still wouldn't bother out of laziness.

>You gotta use your brain a lot more with commands instead of buttons you click on
the term of art is that linux in general and the shell in particular have completely garbage discoverability. if you don't know the feature exists in the first place you can't find out about it.
making it sound like a user error is very unfair to the user and much, much too forgiving towards the designer
>>
>>108655230
Lol, lmao.
Autists have been doing nothing but copying the same UNIX shit for the last fifty years. Their ABIs and APIs are shit, their compilers produce garbage, and yet no one demands that all autists should be put in cages where they belong so that they can no longer harm actual human beings.
>>
>>108655270
Typical 4chan shit, take a reasonable point and turn it into a retarded one by exaggerating. Discovering takes a little more effort, and you have to start by learning some basic commands and concepts (instead of just banging your forehead on the keyboard to get the main menu to come up). But once you get going it's not too hard to discover things. Grepping /etc and home is certainly more productive on average than searching the registry.

No OnE iS FoRcEiNg YoU To BlAh BlAh
as FAS becomes more and more common everything is now FAS, it's fucking annoying when I want to install something with my god damn package manager or something and the only viable option now is a fucking FAS, so miss me with that no one is making you do blurdy blur blur
you stupid fucks
it's just like how fucking systemD is in fucking everything now so if you don't want it you have to choose a less supported OS which is such bullshit because you have to make your own fucking life worse in order to avoid this ubiquitous bullshit

better compatability with the software i run and I'll switch, heres what I want:
>Windows 95 2000 xp style baby duck like ui trim. no flatshit glike gnigger and kde or whatever.
>better compatability than windows 11 with the following softwares: old or retro japanese executables and games, tools, and liteware
>a text editor as good as editpadlite (dont say there is one unless you actually use this one)
>as good a search engine as everything.exe (dont say there is one unless you actually use this
>integration of that search engine into the start menu
until you can do all this I will NEVER use linux. instead of desperately trying to fix this, soon every linux distro will have to have telemetry bloat removed like windows. what a joke OS

>Why don't normies switch?
Most of them grew up with windows, years of total market dominance. But earth is healing, apart from the cloud and subscriptions, windows won't be dominant in the near future.
GenZ and definitely Gen Alpha grew up with Phones, Tablets and Macs. Most of them don't even need a PC at home anymore. All the "good" slop is available on Phones. And many employers offer Macs for work now and it makes sense, a late GenZ is much more familiar with iPhones and iPads than fucking Windows, so the switch to a Macbook is easy.
Check the stats, boomer. PC's are on the decline. Android / AluminumOS and MacOS / iOS are the future and the future is now. In case you didn't notice, Windows is actually the odd one. MacOS, BSD, Android and Linux are all UNIX and/or POSIX, Windows had to implement WSL, to stay relevant for Devs. They are only still alive because of Legacy and Contracts and loved by gaymers and pcmr fags.
>Android / AluminumOS / Gnu/Linux
>iOS / MacOS / BSD
We can share shell scripts, windows could never.

This is my personal experience:
No BSODs
No broken updates
No ads
However, it does get sluggish, there's a lot of arbitrary slowdown shit going on, the file manager isn't great, I'll be doing some browsing and firefox lags like ass in comparison, and overall games don't run really all that much better. And updates still take a while to install, restarting is a slower process. There's little nuggets of shit accumulating on it that I just don't have to deal with on linux. And it's an experience I have on 2 completely different machines (my work laptop, and my desktop). In exchange I have to let go of some programs that I appreciate a lot for sure, but I can live without those.
>>
>>
>>108646473
Why would I switch to a system that is terrible for online gaming? Not all my programs work on it, for example, Premiere Pro has a chance to break. If you really don’t want to deal with Windows, which I still find better than Linux in many use cases, just use macOS.

Talmudders don't officially care what religion you follow. American Ashkis tend to have a deep hatred for Catholics though, for some reason.
Christfags proselytize and want you to join up, but if you don't, all they do is pray about it.
Musssslims make war on rival religions and execute apostates.
