retard from 2 days ago here
I guess this is finally final then, couldn't find a better motherboard locally in the end, so just going to finish the cpu + mobo ordering right now
>ASRock B660M Phantom Gaming 4
>Gigabyte B760M DS3H DDR4
>ASUS B760M-AYW WIFI D4 II
these were the only appealing options I found but the b660 still seemed to be the more sensible choice
supposedly I made a mistake purchasing hyperx fury (2r) over kingston fury (1r), but I'm not doing autistic levels of ram overclocking anyway

Used an AIO for the first time ever and I really regretted it and having to hear a constant humming from the pump so I replaced it with the noctua G2 cooler. My mobo also sets fans to 100% at boot so I replaced all fans with the Be Quiet Silent Wings Pro 4 that has a physical switch on it to limit the max RPM. Incredibly happy with the setup now and it's completely silent at idle.

didn't really get a straight answer and didn't learn anything reading most (but not all) of the rest of last thread so i'll try again
currently have Dell G2724D but i'm getting VRR flicker when G-Sync and HDR are enabled but only if fps drops below about 80
apparently this isn't a real HDR monitor either
should i try a different IPS or switch to miniLED or (Tandem (W))OLED
last one sounds super expensive
should i post specs or is that just opening myself up to more humiliation?

The metal will practically last forever, the fans should be fine for over 10 years.
U12A was discounted to around $80 in the US (@Woot).

How strong are case and AIO fans really compared to others? I know that those little electric hand fans (which are just portable hair dryers without the heat) have to operate at a pretty noisy level in order to move enough air, but sometimes it feels like case fans barely do anything relatively speaking when putting a hand in front or behind them. Does it all come down to optimizing for making as little noise as possible? Or do those grilles make that much of a difference? If the latter was the case, why don't I see more cases where the fan slots have full cut outs for them? I'm sure they can reinforce the structure of the case by other means like making parts thicker / rolled around those holes.

why would you buy a noctua bad cooler when you can buy the only air cooler ever made that has 7 heat pipes and a vapor chamber and looks amazing and has better performance instead?
>>
>>108649265
Get an RMA replacement for that G2724D. It's better than buying a new 1440p IPS monitor.
Buying a new IPS monitor only makes sense if you're planning to move up to a 4K monitor.
You need to share your region & monitor budget if you want specific recommendations.

You're options are side grades at that budget.
If you're annoyed with IPS VRR flickering, OLED will be even worse.
Use Reflex whenever it's available when GSync is enabled.
https://www.rtings.com/monitor/learn/research/vrr-flicker
Are you sure you're annoyed with the flickering vs. screen tearing?
Because IPS panels have the least amount of VRR flickering.
This is how you should be setting up GSync when Reflex is available in game.

Furmark is a GPU heat soak test, no one gives a shit about their benchmark scores.
Newer GPUs deliberately throttle the GPU boost clock when Furmark is running.
3DMark benchmarks gives you a rough idea of how well your system is set up for real time 3D game rendering compared to people with the same CPU & GPU.
The GPU core clocks should be running near maximum frequency (as high as power & thermal limits allow it) in 3DMark tests.

How can I identify the cause of microstutter in my system? I never had or barely had any microstutter a few weeks ago but now I have them occasionally in one game which is battlefield 6. I don't know if its because
-I finally unpaused windows update to install a security update,
-an nvidia driver update (prior to the latest driver from a few days ago the driver i had before that was installed after a clean DDU install),
-a game update
-or some other thing in my system that could be causing it
It's not common but it's still way more common than it was before. I'd maybe see one or two microstutter before but now its like 3 or 4 across a ~3-4 hour play session.
>>
>>108649674
The GPU core clock in Furmark is throttling down to 1666 MHz in that screenshot because of the unrealistically high power load.
Even a modest 3070 model like the Zotac reference card can sustain 1800 MHz boost in most gaming loads.

I'm pretty new to testing and benchmarking.
I'm going to do another benchmark with 3DMark, but how do I know I'm not using an "unrealistically high power load"?
>>

>>108649783
I'm getting increasingly more paranoid that my system has a fuck ton of bloat that I'm not aware of because for example I downloaded some windows health management tool thing the other day and I found a random 10gb cache file for an app I haven't used in like 5 or more years and have since uninstalled, and also my VPN wasn't loading web pages properly but when I decided to reinstall it I found like 8 old duplicate drivers for the VPN going all the way back to 2022 and when I removed them it fixed itself.
I've been using the same windows install for at least 8 years or maybe longer and I'm wondering if I need to do a clean install especially because I've seen moved from intel to amd. Is there an all in one app which allows for quick backup of documents and shit like steam config settings and stuff?

There's no uniform standard of how motherboard manufacturers label their hardware sensors.
Negative values are probably coming from sensor pins in the super IO chip that isn't connected to anything, this should be hidden.
HWInfo keeps a more accurate motherboard to super io ship mapping database because AIBs send them the proprietary register map data.
Librewhatever is relying on the community to add sensor registry maps for the boards they have access to.
>>
>>108649852
Reinstalling windows isnt the problem. I'm happy to do it. I just don't want to lose valuable files because I dont know where everything is located. I suppose I can manually back up my documents folder and the steam/common folder but I don't know if I'm missing shit in like appdata folders or whatever. I'm talking about an almost decade old windows install with shit scattered everywhere.

> AIOs can't be reused on newer CPUs
Of course they can be reused on newer CPUs!
I can even reuse my Arctic Liquid Freezer from my AM4 socket on my AM5 socket.
I can even refill distilled water after removing some screws from the cooler.
The pump can last 20 years if throttled to ~2050 rpm.
>>
>>108649808
>how do I know I'm not using an "unrealistically high power load"?
Don't run Furmark or anything that significantly throttles the GPU core clock down.
There's a difference in the intensity of the GPU workload if the 3070 can't sustain over 1800 MHz core boost clock @ maximum power limit vs. Furmark that throttles down to 1666 MHz at the same power load.
>>
>>108649808
Furmark is a GPU cooler & overall PC cooling test if you run it for extended hours (also a bit of PSU stress test).
3DMark helps you understand whether the PC is running at expected performance levels. It's okay if this untuned PC scores below average.
You want to check that there's nothing seriously wrong with the PC's gaming performance ex. running at 40 FPS when average for that CPU + GPU is 70~80 fps (fps = 3DMark score / 100 on most benchmarks).
>>
>>108649729
When the screen is mostly 2D content, the game fps drops to like 56 according to the monitor's fps counter the one time I bothered checking.
When it's below 80-ish the entire panel's backlight acts like it's turning on and off very rapidly.
It also happens when the game is struggling to keep fps normally with 3D content.
It also happens if the game is running (not sure what fps) and I alt+tab, but not every time. When the game is not running at all, desktop apps have no problem with backlight consistency.
It could just be it's a shitass game or framegen might play into it, idk.
>>
>>108649864
My C drive is a Samsung sata ssd from back in the day and I also have two nvme drives for games and extra storage. I'm wondering if it'd be a good idea to just get another sata drive and install windows fresh on it while keeping my old drive and files in case i meed something, and then eventually wipe it and have it as a 2nd boot drive for bazzite alongside my windows drive, or something like that.
>>
>>
>>108649947
It never happened before I turned HDR on except now I think the game looks ugly without it so I'm stubbornly not going back.
Just tested again with Steam's performance overlay. It's fine with 55-ish FPS / 110-ish DLSS but with one of the specific reliably flicker-y menus it doesn't do DLSS anymore and ranges from 50-70 FPS and causes flicker.
>>
>>108649991
Turned off DLSS and the same 3D area is like 80fps and the 2D menu stays about the same FPS with no flickering.
But now hair and fur looks, idk, shimmery? Like there's little particles that don't have consistent position around the edges of the hair/fur.
I unironically like the DLSS look better. I think playing this game has actively made me more retarded.

https://www.tsmc.com/english/dedicatedFoundry/technology/logic/l_A16
TSMC A16 technology integrates leading nanosheet transistors with innovative Super Power Rail (SPR) solutions, bringing greatly improved logic density and performance.
SPR improves logic density and performance by dedicating front-side routing resources to signals. It also significantly reduces IR drop, improving power delivery efficiency. Most importantly, our novel backside contact scheme preserves gate density, layout footprint, and device width flexibility as traditional front-side power delivery to achieve an industry-first best density and best performance.
Compared to TSMC’s N2P process, A16 will provide an 8-10% speed improvement at the same Vdd (positive power supply voltage), a 15-20% power reduction at the same speed, and up to 1.10X chip density, making it best suited for high-performance computing (HPC) products with complex signal routes and dense power delivery networks.
Nvidia Fenyman GeForce GPUs built on the most advanced TSMC process, Nvidia again making great long term investments and bets on the future CUDA, rt & tensor cores, unlike inferior companies with no forward thinking foresight and vision stuck in the past with outdated obsolete rasterization

Only morons think people who buy flagship cards prioritize value for money.
They are buying those cards to secure a level of performance that won't become mainstream for a while.
An RTX 5080 isn't faster than a 4090 for example. It's practically guaranteed a 6080 won't be faster than a 5090 either.

He should stick to reviewing cases, CPU coolers, and begging his viewers to fund his GPU reviews.

It'll need a lower power limit or else it will be pushing the same peak power through 18% less surface area (higher heat flux density).
They'll also have to separately shrink the 3D Vcache tile, which is a non-starter.
All that for a chip that might retail for $280~300 given the 7800X3D's market price. Not happening.

>not the guy who leaked fsr4 int8
Because an AMD employee accidentally leaked the int8 FSR4 source code, not some journalist.
The AMD engineer responsible for that leak, and his manager, probably faced serious consequences (termination, demotion, or dead end prospects for the leaker, official written reprimand to the manager for his failure to enforce proper code-review protocol).
The leaker probably lost all his unvested RSUs as well.

An AMD employee is the one who leaked the actual INT8 FSR4 source code, Videocardz & Ancient Gameplays reported on it
That source code was mistakenly released as part of the MIT open source license, and it's not legally simple to retract that code.
This is why OptiScaler can still use that mistakenly leaked code in their feature set.
Steve & GN conducted their own research & published their findings to expose AMD's lobbying efforts.

AMD's marketing team are making an example out of GN. This is a classic "chat shit, get banged" situation.
Tech companies view these creators as marketing assets. If they become a liability, they lose access to privileged product pre-launch materials.

It's an expensive chip with lower production volume.
I don't think the rest of those tech outlets have lost direct marketing communication with AMD.
GN's been relegated to communicating through a third-party marketing group.

thoughts on "hard" mousepads? i'm tired of my regular pads getting all fucked up after a year of use.
the hard pads seem to have a really scratchy sound when you move your mouse around though.
should i be looking for some kind of metal pad?
>>
>>108653327
I have a harder (not metal) pad, the G440.
It's absolute ass. It's way too slippery and it's terrible for precision. And indeed it's scratchy no matter the pads.
Honestly sure the normal cloth mousepads are probably harder to clean, but I'd stick with those.

>Steve's probably just making shit up for drama views
that's the opposite of GN's content from what i've seen. they pretty extensively show receipts for claims.
>Dude has been buck broken by Linus
didn't the exact opposite happen where GN showed a lot of bad practices by the LTT team to push out more videos instead of refining methodology?
>>
>>108653376
>Honestly sure the normal cloth mousepads are probably harder to clean, but I'd stick with those.
that's not what i wanna hear, my cloth pads always curl up on the corner where i keep my mouse and rest my palm.
i think i saw some logitech pads that might be cloth but sewn around the edges, maybe that's the play.
>>
>>108653440
Nowadays a lot of pads are properly sewn and you're not gonna have that problem. But you might want to look at the easier ones to clean. Because there's some that are awful at that, some not so.
I have the fnatic focus 3 (2 whole XXL pads actually, on an L shaped desk) that I got when they were cheap and it's a bit annoying to clean them because they're fuckhuge but it's doable.
>>
>>108653466
cleaning isn't much of an issue for my end, i use pretty high dpi, fully crossing the screen is only about 1.5 inches of mouse movement so it typically stays in the corner of the pad.
something even as small as a 6" x 6" pad would be enough for my needs.
i appreciate your input

i'm guessing the reality is a bit of politics and a bit of they don't have enough time and samples.
they probably lowered their priority on getting a sample to GN due to negative coverage but weren't looking to actually blacklist them but also for whatever reason they didn't have enough hardware set aside and put through hell and back before sending out as their premium samples to get reviewed.
>>
>>108653689
they for sure have enough samples, even skatterbencher got one, he was indeed blacklisted and it backfired because all the reviews are very negative even from wendell, whos' a big shill for any and all products he gets his hands on

If you're not good enough to make the most out of a Wallhack mouse pad with etched surface, stick to cloth pads.

>they for sure have enough samples
on a high end enthusiast product like this? doubtful.
they hyper-select for super quality samples, and then those few samples get shipped around to the reviewers, every reviewer doesn't get their own sample.
the reason everyone has a video to drop the day of a product launch is they all get them months in advance to account for this, which is why i mentioned not only the lack of samples but also the lack of time. probably just didn't prioritize getting them theirs and the timing didn't work out due to low sample count and shipping time and all that.

i can respect that. personally i'd prefer a win7 machine over 10 but i jumped ship years back, only thing i can't do on linux that i could on windows is get past some anti-cheats for games.
everything else is the same or better experience, depending on if you are willing to tinker and fix stuff when you run into something you don't like or small issues to fix.

that's pretty comfy, i wish i had an xp box still, i do have a win7 laptop in the basement and a xp iso and some old games like daiblo 2 laying around, one day i'll get a charger for it.
not a fan of windows 8? personally hated vista.
used windows from dos 3.0 through 10.
7 was the last good windows imo, 8 was a decade before its time with the original layout being meant for touch screens/tablets.
10 had some nice qol features but not worth the bloatware/telemetry aids that got packaged in.

I do have a machines for Windows 8. Mostly 8.1 where they kinda fixed the desktop.
I also have multiple machines for each os. For example for win98 I have a Tulatin 1.4 with an voodoo 3 and a Aureal 2 sound card. I have faster 98 machines but that one is my favorite.

they send a sample that you have to sign an NDA for along with some points that they want you to mention and when you're done you send it back to them so they can send it to another reviewer, it's very very rare that you get to keep shit that's sent to you for review, certainly not anything above $100

You're right, most of these things get rotated through the reviewers.
I bet companies like Intel and amd are sending binned chips. I wouldn't be surprised if gpu manufacturers were doing the same. Just rotate the same god tier 1 in a million bin around all the techtuber channels so they can give it a review as though the top scoring chip of the entire production run is somehow close to whatever garbage is getting shipped to the local microcenter.

Do miniLED IPS monitors just look like standard backlit ones in SDR? I'm not sure how much HDR content I'll be playing, and if most games are going to have as grey blacks as my current IPS I don't see much sense in going miniLED.
>>
>>108656088
They have so many dimming zones that you shouldn't see any backlights except for HDR in dark content. It's still IPS so the pixels and lights never turn off like OLED and the response times aren't instant.

What are you on about?
https://displayhdr.org/certified-products/#tab-400
It's VESA-certified. On the lower end, HDR400, but it's true HDR. Do you not have it set up right? Make sure you actually calibrated the HDR too, Windows has a tool for this, and your gpu's control panel needs to be on 10-bit full color, not limited.
It doesn't have a billion dimming zones so it still won't be like those $10k super displays every techtuber jerks off, but it has it.

You get what you pay for
The more expensive amp is a somewhat known quantity being based on a tpa3255 which is capable of hundreds of watts real RMS power output depending on the power supply and cooling.
The cheaper amp if you really dig into the listing is only good for 30w per channel RMS. The 12V input only needing 5 amps at 12V gives away the power it's capable of.

You just let windows update.
Most drivers will likely be installed depending on system. The only 2 things that are really of concern afterwards are GPU drivers (Windows update gives out old ones) and chipset drivers (not all INFs are supplied for some reason)
If you have thunderbolt there might be an additional one required.
My system stability has always been perfect.

Mini ped works well on my tv, but I have doubts about it being functional in smaller monitors.
One of the reasons why it works in my 75 inch tv is because the leds have room between eachother than a small monitor wouldn't have. More space less bleed, less space more bleed.
My miniled tv just barely passes for the hdr designation and the hdr content still looks miles better when done correctly. The problem is actually getting it to function. Most sources seem to have no idea what its working with while others handle and display it fine.
