every time i talk to you guys here about trying to find job in QA you guys always say "dont find job in QA!"
i have 11 months of manual QA experience mostly with just postman but that was back in march 2023 to feb 2024, and it was in a big national bank too.
and yet ever since july 2025 i have looked for around QA jobs, sent out around 350 applications and only got 21 take home tests and 4 interviews.
if i ditch QA and go back to webdev, what's going to change 6 months from now?
>>
A dude I was talking to said he always calls the company after submitting an application (if he's actually interested in the job), which shows he's interested, not just some dude or bot spamming applications everywhere, and makes it very likely for him to get an interview. I told him I get the logic of what he's saying, but it sounds like he's living in some alternate reality if that actually works. Like telling a girl she's hot and thinking that'll make her like you. Yeah, that makes sense in my head. But I live in real life, where it doesn't work like that.
So I think that advice is retarded, but figured I'd ask you guys before completely discarding it.

I'm so fucking sick of techjeet companies throwing the rest of their entire product catalog under the bus to shill for AI. Why is GCP so primitive? Why can't I reserve or queue for VMs if my region is full? I really have to sit there like cuck clicking Retry indefinitely? Why is clicking the "upload file" button in the storage buckets GUI literally 10,000x slower than the CLI command, even for individual file uploads? Why does this shitty company expect users to get a PhD in their API to do even routine tasks instead of using that $4 trillion market cap to actually add features to the products the users are paying for? My org is paying millions of USD for this. Where is all this money going? Some gay fucking AI assisted Google search that's fucking wrong half the time and just regurgitates the top search result 90% of the time?
>>
>>
>>108668351
Go to cyber security as an isso. You basically just check lists of vulnerabilities from automated scans and tell people to fix them. Basically QA with an extra cert or two.
Webdev is dead now that ai can shit out a website in half a second perfectly
>>
>>108668611
Send a polite follow up saying that you're sorry they couldn't make it to your interview time and suggest a new time tomorrow and ask if they can make it then or if they have a time that would work better for their schedule

These books are massive wastes of time and honestly quite stupid. You can tell this has absolutely nothing to do with writing good code. Academicfags should be required to actually use their ideas to code up a game or something as a real working proof of being useful instead of being paid to waste everyone’s time on papers that just aren’t useful.

>Year 1 - Junior Dev - $90k

>Year 3 - Dev - $180k Fully Remote
>Year 4 - Senior Dev - $220k Fully Remote
Electrical Engineer career progression
>Year 1 - temp-to-hire contract worker, $60k no benefits, no PTO

You know those dreams where something is chasing you and you are running in slow motion. That's an engineering career and the monster is inflation. If you want to make money and enjoy life stay with CS. If you want to be poor become an engineer.

are you working in cybersec right now?
i did a short 5 days comptia course back in december and i bailed out in 2 days because i was ungodly stupid. spent a lot money on it too around $580. i basically did no preparation and i found myself using my laptop with ubuntu as dual boot feels annoying. i did manage to install it but after i bail out of the course i wiped the ubuntu out of my laptop.
at the end of the next month after that course my mom approached me needing to make some kind of blogsite and i outright say "no, i cant." she was so pissed. i told her "we're gonna need cost for the domain" and so forth. that was at the end of the january and i still regret it.
maybe webdev looks dead to you but here govt jobs still needs webdev. guys who know how to use react and what not and im still gonna hold on to my chances. at least it's step upwards from QA and with webdev i can still collab with others/do gigs even though it's not direct employment
i still think webdev is still doable for me to learn compared to cybersec/sysadmin.

I keep reminding myself that I have a good salary and a 2-days-in-office job in one of the worst job markets of post WW2 history but fuck me if my bosses aren't fucking retarded and sociopathic. The funny thing is that they don't want to lose me as well because they can't seem to recruit anyone half decent that doesn't run away in under a month. I occupy a weird spot in my work place.
Of the two network Engineers I'm the junior and tend not to touch our data center a lot.
But I also handle pretty much all the telecoms, have more institutional knowledge than the help desk as a whole about how things work/why things were done, and also am known for basically doing on the spot "Hey go fix this" trips.
I'm basically the liaison between my team and the help desk while also covering the more annoying/less glamorous services.

A lot of the time when I was on the SDT, so long as you make it actively seem like you are attempting to help them and aren't 'arguing' its fine.
Granted, I work in a female leaning company as a whole (non-profit) so most people in it are in for the love of the game.
That being said, of the most cancerous employees I've had to deal with, a woman takes the top spot for being a bitch in HR that no-one liked on our IT team.

i see posts like that here all the time, way to often for it just to be a joke. my hypothesis is that all such posts are by jeets who are attempting to trick devs into turning down jobs by getting devs to have impossible-expectations about how much pay the can reasonably expect.
>>
>>
>>108669352
Depends on them but mine isn't.
The higher ups are decently paid compared to floor workers buts because.
A. Pay is generally shit at a non-profit due to tight budgets.
B. The floor work at non-profits tends to be low skill, tedious jobs
The latter is true especially in the mental health ones.
What I more commonly see is you get people that have their hearts in the right place but who are not necessarily skilled and they end up advancing more due to seniority than actual merit.
Luckily our IT department has a decently sterling image and a department rep that knows how to play corporate politics so we tend to get left alone and are able to get by in lean times by putting off upgrades instead of cutting staff.
You also end up with the average employee that is a good deal less tech savvy on average due to their more advanced age

based on a mix of what I know and what older coworkers have told me software engineer comp is actually like this:
year 1 - $50k - $75k
year 2 - $55k - $80k
year 3 - $75k - $90k
year 4 - $80k - $95k
year 5 - $95k - $110k
year 6 - $100k - $115k
year 7 - $115k - $135k
year 8 - $115k - $135k
year 9 - $115k - $135k
year 10 - $115k - $135k
year 11 - $135k - $180k
year 12 - $135k - $180k
year 13 - $135k - $180k
year 14 - $135k - $180k
year 15 - $150k - $200k
year 16 - $150k - $200k
year 17 - $150k - $200k
year 18 - $150k - $200k
year 19 - $150k - $200k
year 20 - $150k - $200k
year 21+ $0k because you got laid off, your nerves are shot, and employers assume that you want too much money so you're done. GG.

I am in year 3 of my career and on my 3rd manager. The amount of churn 'n burn in a giant Fortune 200 company is shocking. Constant reorganizations, shuffling, management musical chairs. And every time a new manager comes in they're convinced they're going to save the world and it's like watching the same rerun over and over again, except all the work to make their superhero dream comes true falls on you. I feel like a cuck who just exists as a step stool for people trying to get promoted to director level.

I'm an old man (nearly 10 years of xp) trying to move to embedded/robotics/something different from full stack webdev, I have some "portfolio" work that I can show off, but I get zero answers for senior positions (I have no relevant experience) and zero answers for junior positions (I'm very obviously old)
I wouldn't even bother getting a junior dev salary (at least until I get my foot firmly in the door)
the next step is probably to start removing older employment from my cv to try to get a junior interview, but it feels like I'm deceiving them
I don't know. maybe I need to know someone who knows someone
on the other hand, in this economy, I'm not too motivated to jump out of a stable ship

I'm a firm believer that IT professionals, especially those in Help Desk or Networking roles, need to lift weights.
The amount of shit you need to move or one hand (Printers, switches, etc) gets a lot easier when you do.

I got accepted into a post-master's certificate program at Johns Hopkins. Should I do it? Would be expensive but my employer would pay for part of it. The courses are pretty cool and specialized and directly relevant to my career. I can't find any other university offering something similar. I want to keep up my studies but can't really do a PhD while working.

I got fired for AI. We were first told we were putting hiring on hold to funnel money into AI. And then we got a round of layoffs. The other guy fired with me caused everyone to freak out because he had a bunch of projects and services he supported that only he supported. And because they did the new "set up a call, have the call, disconnect them from the network in 1 hour" quick cold firing so there was no knowledge transfer. All his documents and notes just got deleted and no one knows how to support or fix anything he was on and they are just praying nothing breaks.
I told them in the exit interview, if you can even call it that, that we were creating a culture that there would be no senior devs. We had boomers at the company that had been software developers for 30+ years and they were invaluable because they knew so many things inside and out, and they were essentially cutting down every tree before it could grow tall.
But the two women on the call were literally the HR meme. They just stared at me all smiles like they were insane and said "That's the best part anon, you don't need to care anymore because this isn't your responsibility now! :)"

Kind of. This is something of a recalibration/correction phase. The tech giants are aging out and going through the typical death throes to appease the shareholders.
But I've noticed a serious surge in startups, entrepreneurship in tech too. So there is a wave of smaller businesses growing right now to eventually replace these dying trees. Software is software, it's used, it will be in demand, and if you are good at building it you will find your place.
>>
>>
>>108670733
>That's the best part anon, you don't need to care anymore because this isn't your responsibility now! :)
They were right, why bother caríng whether the company goes down the drain or not. Just pray that the next wave of layoffs hits HR hard.
>>
>>
Imagine building an actual efficient, productive, pragmatic business organization. There is no HR, there are no PMs/POs/Scrum masters yadda yadda yadda.
There are your engineers. Each engineer team has a lead that handles basic managerial tasks, feature planning, deployments. Everyone else just engineers. That lead has a boss that is a former engineer with the highest strategic acuity, who manages a room of leads. And then there is the CEO who directs all this. In the modern tech world engineers are expected to do literally everything so it's a natural segue.
Then the only additional hires you need are customer service and salesmen.
>>
>>108670792
i think, unfortunately, software is about to experience what the arts have been going through for the last decade+.
modern tools make doing the thing accessible to more people, the product is worth less, the labour is worth less, and demand barely moves while supply continues to surge.
i think the only software companies that are safe now are the ones attached to frontier model labs.
whether smaller startups chip away at the big guys, or if the big guys downsize and are also able to massively diversify at the same time, is what's going to be interesting to watch.

>for some reason these meetings ALWAYS have the business in it so they're constantly nitpicking on dead solutions.
>business keeps throwing out retarded shit that makes no sense and bigwig boss goes "Hmm, we'll just make a demo for this and let them weigh in"
I'm trying really hard to just turn brain off and do whatever but I'm so tired of getting stonewalled every time and the moment I do something, it's something actually useless and all I see are REALLY fucking retarded solutions getting thrown around when we should've had the consultants do this. I don't want to be involved with this because it's so retarded but because of the scope I'm going to have to be brought in.

Anon other than studying for 4-5 hours everyday (preferable in the morning after breakfast and before lunch) i heavily suggest you to start collabing with someone you know from uni/anywhere else to make a project together. With the job market being so shite you can try making up discord bots together or maybe game project together or maybe try sell merch / youtube account. Expect not getting a job even after a year plus after your graduation. If you spent it all just studying and applying and doing take home tests and failing interviews without any activities for yourself like creative projects you will literally die.
I cant stress how important hobby project is while looking for jobs/being unemployed. On days / weeks you feel like you dont want to study/applying for job at least you must push yourself to do these side projects. When those hobby projects ended up giving you some cash to treat yourself it's better than feeling pressured to do mcdonalds or dishwashing.

Don't know the details of your particular retarded task. What I tend to do is write down whatever it is they are asking for, then schedule a follow-up. There's two angles you can then take.
One, it's super tarded, you write down the sordid implications to get it done exactly as specified. Leave out not one gory detail. Tell them you want in writing that you are approved to do this stupid shit. If it's retarded, and your manager isn't a retard, they usually relent at the follow up or take your gory detail to the next higher up. If they are a retard, they approve it. Sometimes in writing. You can now either do it, blowing shit up, or go to the next higher up for a sanity check if you're feeling spicy.
You cannot change shit from the inside. The higher you go, the less anyone is aware enough of the implementation details to avert a disaster. Be prepared for the dumbest shit you simply will not do, and try to have applications/job offers in hand by the time it looks like that stupid shit is coming down the pipe.
Best I got mate.

I don't think I wrote anything terribly unhinged, it's just a fact that tech has trooned out in the last decade+ and the office I work at sucks. On that note, I'm not unemployed, maybe underemployed might fit but I'm not sure I could cut it in a tech job anymore (but I KNOW other people who REALLY can't hack it are in anyways).

that have never been part of the definition of God ,people should read more before pulling out their retarded opinions seriously and it's not like this fucker can just ask google for definitio of god on google and check a wiki where he'll find different definitions through different philosophies/religions.
honestly most stem fags are really ignorant when it comes to humanities ,that's a shame.

Guys I've been in industry for 15 years. I've never seen the market this bad before.
I have suspected for a few weeks that the market is much worse than the powers that be are letting on.
Now I see in the news that Meta is laying off 10% of their staff. Microsoft and Oracle have also laid off thousands.
I have only ever worked as a Software Engineer for the past 15 years. I don't have another trade. I'm not sure what I will do here.
I just applied to third shift at a warehouse for min wage, and the guy was shocked that I wanted to work there.
I am taking care of my GF. She's got some health issues. This is the best I can do. I am out of options boys.
I even went 5 rounds with a cybersecurity company. It took a whole month. I even did a project for them. At the end, they just said "no" and confessed that they had "a lot of excellent applicants."
I can't deal with this shit and I don't know what to do.
Any words of encouragement would be appreciated anons.

you'll make it. Consider agriculture or trades ,being in closed environment without seeing the sun sucks ,they might be harsh with you but if you show you're not a faggot ,you're motivated your boss and coworkers will like it ,you're probably intelligent so you gonna catch up and ultimatly be better than the average paco.
You'll make it ,God grand to his good sons a hard path but at least he give a path.
You'll make it ,we're all gonna make it !!!

I graduated with a CS degree about 6 months ago. I wasn’t very motivated to apply for software jobs at the time, so I took a service/operations management job at a small business. It pays about $50K/year.
The job is fine and low-stress, and since it’s 9–5 I have time to work on a side hustle that brings in about $40K/year.
The thing is, there is a big chance that I could land a $190K+ CS job if I seriously focused on applying and interview prep.
Now I’m torn between staying in this role and growing here, or pushing to re-enter the CS job market and try for software engineering.
Not really looking for advice just curious how others would think about this situation.

Anyone having to deal with third party tools and internally seething because your leadership team wants to design solutions using these specific third party tools but they're not designed for it at all and jiggyrigging it to work just makes it into really bad architecture and design? It's frustrating too because we both know it's bad design and they always want us "meh demo it out anyways let me see how it looks" and I'm already screaming at them going like brother we know this is going to look like shit, why bother?

For example, right now I have to fill 1000 data entry shit as a developer because they want to use this third party tool as the data warehouse which I told them multiple times it makes no fucking sense. I even gave them a solution that's significantly easier maintenance but they don't want to use it because it's not OOB. Could I use robotools to do it? Yeah maybe but getting sign off from IT will take fucking months and this has to go live next week. God, I hate data entry projects. How do I fucking cope?

I have a direct report that seems to be grumpier the more I talk to him. How do I get him to cut it off? I'll ask him for help on a project and then when I get it back, it's nothing what I envisioned so I end up having to re-do the whole thing. It's not that he's wrong or the work is bad but he completely interprets the stuff I send him into something completely else. I've told him to just do multiple reports/slides based on what he thinks the interpretation is to help and most of the time he'll still miss given 3-5 takes.
He always seems to be complaining about projects too but then I'll always see him go over and beyond on stuff that doesn't really matter. It would be one thing if these projects are successful but these projects end up getting cockblocked by leadership and then thrown in the bin.
How do I handle this?

If you're a white man you've never known a market that wasn't trying to reject you so that they could get their magical negro tech genius candidate that all the 90s teacher fantasy inner city Hollywood movies told them definitely existed.
It's just that it gets worse with the actual economy. People are complaining now because this is the first time the economy being bad affects people other than white men.
>>
>>108677943
Well what do I do? I asked him for help on a powerpoint recently and he just copied most of my slides when I wanted him to do something completely else. We are living in the AI revolution and are becoming like the managers of infinite minds. We’ll get to experience 1000x productivity increases, which is fantastic because now you can attend 12 standups a day while babysitting five copilots that confidently refactor working code into abstract art.
The purpose of life? It’s to optimize your personal throughput, maximize KPI alignment, and continuously iterate on your existence in an agile framework where “done” is deprecated and everything is a perpetual beta. Why keep going? Because the backlog is infinite, the roadmap is a suggestion, and somewhere out there an LLM just suggested rewriting your entire legacy distributed monolith with circular dependencies and undocumented side effects in Rust for performance gains.
To live is to synergize

is it normal to start a quasi government job and everything is out of date by 5-20 years? Like why has this sql server not been updated in 6 years? Why are production systems running on insane vulnerabilities from 2013? What have these "gov employees" been doing for the past 20 years? Everything EOL and how we are gonna need to have a meeting about that and spend 2 months migrating to something "modern" I mean im lazy but god damn.

I guess but the way he talks to me isn't really cool either. Just a few days ago, I asked him if he could do X with Y and he starts ranting about "Does anyone even know what Y does? Why does everyone think it's some magic answer that will solve everything?". I can't have him saying shit like that especially heated. He's glad he snapped at me and not his coworkers or leadership.

i burn every fucking bridge I come across. Its like staying on good terms with your ex. What is the fucking point. Best way to never have to go back is to burn that shit to the ground. This actually crossed my mind, but it’s a long shot, and I already learned what happens when you turn something you enjoy into your job.

it usally better when I try not to involve anyone in the task that needs to be completed. Im use to working in non enterprise companies and doing everything. If I try to get some boomer to do fucking anything they fuck it up. But can do specific things they want to do sort of well or they like to spin their wheels doing something completely unrelated. Its taken my boomer 9 months to finally come around and help me with the new shit they want us to do.

No. I'm not a developer but I write some scripts from here to there. I tried to write a web scraper (scrape a certain website, save as JSON and import somewhere else the data) and it failed miserably. I was trying with the latest Anthropic model, Opus 4.7.
There is no way in hell that it can replace someone who's a professional programmer with writing code as a primary job.

I graduated 1.5 years ago with a CS bachelor's from a half-decent state school. I've been searching for jobs in the SF Bay Area with no luck. I have 10 years of hobbyist programming experience, 1.5 years of part-time internship experience, and a resume that my friends say is "stacked." I actually enjoy programming. For many jobs where I should be getting interviews, I don't get the interviews. I get some interviews but ultimately always fall short; the farthest I've reached is a final stage in-person interview. I fear that I am screwed. How screwed am I? I've been filtered out of all the "New Grad" roles.

Don't quit bro. Stick it out. The market is really really shitty right now as far as I can see.
Wait for it. I think in a year or two this war and the AI volatility are going to stabilize and the market will recover once they realize these LLMs are a cool toy but can't fully replace people.
Really. I am kicking myself about the job I left two years ago. Don't do it unless you have something lined up first.
Even then- the new thing might turn out to be not what you had hoped. It's a risk.
