FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
Usage: paste this into Powershell, run.irm https://get.activated.win | iex
>and Office?
Same link, select Ohook option
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats
>What version should I install?
>W10 Enterprise IoT LTSC 2021

Use only if you fell for the 12th+ gen Intel meme and need the new CPU scheduler
Wait for IoT LTSC 2027 if you can
>Installing apps on LTSC
Use WinGet/Scoop or install MS Store in CMD with: wsreset -i
>W11 Home/Pro/Education/Enterprise/Enterprise IoT

Have to make a live usb with rufus in case my cheap plasticky shitty laptop breaks in fucking half and have to format a new computer in a hurry. Last time I checked a fwt thread the W11 Iot ltsc had not come out yet. Is there any reason to use it over the excellent w10 version? I am not a gaymer

you could try nomacs, it's meant to be lightweight, especially since MS keeps forcing bloat on their apps, you can get the installer on their page. but if you want a CMD solution you can got to scoop.sh or winstall.app to see the catalog of scoop and winget
jpegview is another popular photo viewer here

I hated it when I tired it.
Also, any recommendations for a partition/disk management program? I use mini tools partition wizard and like it but it does have a lot of popups and begs to be updated way to often

pointless

just set UAC to always on I think, 90% of LPEs are because of the shitty default of no UAC in task scheduler

retard it's the SAME build, unless you're using LTSC then 26200 is already there and it's okay because it's a fake version

Just tried building a tiny11 iso using tiny11builder. It came out at 840mb. Is this normal? Obviously haven't tried installing it.

Is there a way to reset the size of a window to its first time launch default? Played a game that launched in a different resolution and because of it some windows got fucked after I went back to the regular resolution.

>pointless
wrong, not doing so leaves you open to malware that communicates with a control server e.g. ransomware, infostealers
>UAC always on
not enough, being logged in as an admin still suppresses certain prompts and grants access to more resources and commands, even at the highest level. Reading Microsoft’s documentation will tell you as much.
>the same build
semantic argument, 24H2 has the slop features disabled that 25H2 enables
>administrator protection
enabled via GPO
>half of that shit is vPro features your CPU doesn't have and the rest is on by default
msinfo32 will tell you everything you need to know. Try having a CPU made this decade.
> on by default
cherrypicked only part of the sentence because he couldn’t refute. Let me guess, you also have SAM protection off so you can reset using a Windows password reset USB?
Not only are you someone that has never done a single bit of Windows security, it is clear you do not know what the MSB is, what a CIS benchmark is, think it’s safe for command line utilities to communicate on the network on an interactive user.
Oh, and I’m a certified MCP, so I am quite literally a certified Windows admin

outdated, microsoft's opinion on best practice is just having a standard hybrid acc that can run admin permissions but you are informed of it being asked of you and can say yes or no
>3
doesnt change anything positively, and is likely to break stuff
>4
25H2 is in GAC, and is fully production ready
>5
same as 3, you are just breaking your computer usability for no reason, you shouldnt have malware on your pc in the first place and the solution to fight malware isnt to break all other hardware and software
>6
most of those are hardening for specific use case enterprise solutions, microsoft will apply best practice changes by default on home user machines that dont break usability and performance like memory integrity, secure boot, firmware protection, bla bla
>7
you should only apply useful group policies that you cannot otherwise change through gui in userland, tons of group policies are for xp/vista dont even work in w11 and are placebo, they are for domain joined machines not home use in general
>8
again no use case.
generally having a install made by a official clean iso, using a ms acc with all default security settings + strong complicated password + 2fa, having screen lock after 5 mins of use, as well as default bitlocker enabled and secure boot enabled and UAC/Smart app control and cloud/realtime protection will get you 99.9% of security you need, then make sure you dont install apps that arent verified, digitally signed and pass virustotal scans and you are good to go and will be safer than your pc if you install a bunch of 3rd party programs all the time, and infinitely more usable and powerful.

>>108677610
not really, its objectively superior in terms of security, which is what anon was hyperfocusing on, and helps much more than a bunch of his meme hardening. I dont use a ms account myself since I value the simplicity of local accounts and it combined with EEA region on install is the most effective way of bypassing most of microsoft's nagging and annoyances in windows, but I also dont stress about security autistically as a local acc + default settings with memory integrity and virtual machine platform disabled generally give the most convenient, performant, and secure experience i can get out of windows. but most people here are neet seachuds with 20 year old laptops that only play gacha games and goon to porn all day and reinstall windows every 2 weeks on meme debloated ltsc isos that break their performance and security.

You are using their operating system. There's no argument you can make to negate that it's fully proprietary and quite literally your operating. system. There's nothing you can do that would take away control from microsoft, it's all tinfoil hat placebo memery. You can slightly have more local independance and prevent surveillance capitalism with a few tweaks, but that's not what you are talking about or aiming to achieve. You want to achieve full control of your system and independance of microsoft, by using Microsoft's Windows. Schizoid disorder moment.

Ask yourself why you extrapolated this amount from a single line of text and then ask yourself who really has the mental issue. Zero nuance, and a tirade of assumptions.

Hello Windows users.
I'm using Linux, and I need to install some firmware updates for some hardware I use. Specifically it's an ASMedia ASM1166 SATA slot expander.
They don't provide firmware updates that run on Linux, but you can update the firmware on Windows.
What's the easiest way to get this firmware updated using Windows without actually installing it? If there's a live environment version, that might be the kind of thing I'm after.
One other thing: This is a headless machine, so if it can work in such a way where I can update the firmware remotely over RDP or something, that would be preferable, but I could go and get a monitor to do this as well.

>>108680309
With Rufus you can use Windows to Go to make a live Windows environment.
Alternatively, there's Hiren's Boot CD, a custom Windows PE implementation used for troubleshooting, repairing, and disk management.
At least one of those should work, however, be wary that the firmware updates are usually built to be run from a typical Windows install

Noted. Thanks for the information.
This install is still at a pretty early stage, so it isn't an insurmountable amount of trouble to just fully install Windows 10, update the firmware, and then reinstall Linux. If there's more risk of problems from using Windows to Go or PE, I'll probably do that instead.

I've got a retro gaming PC running 7. I haven't yet encountered old games I want to play that refuse to work on it.
I figure I'll keep the parts for when I encounter weird hardware that absolutely needs XP. I'm moving house soon though so they're up on the chopping block if I need to get rid of stuff in the move.
