I've not done this for years so I don't know if it's still easily possible, but back in the days we could just download a flash software compatible with the device's SOC, download a system image, plug the device to the computer with a usb cable, turn it on, and flash it, and voilà, the phone was like new.
If you want to brick it, do this but flash a random file to it instead of a system image.
Or do it manually: install adb (android debugger) on your computer, turn the phone on, plug it, and send the linux commands to destroy all the partitions.

connect it to pc with their update tool, download the firmware, change the main script file it uses, null the payload files, re-create the hashes sums it uses for verification and hit flash

phones get destroyed if water gets in, pry open the back cover so the internals are exposed, put a wizard hat on or just roll a cone from a paper so you can wear it and then go to nearest river or lake and put the phone underwater for exactly 42minutes

Not OP, but doesn't adb require dev options to already be on?

I always retire my phones by stacking a few containers of tannerite around them at my favorite gravel quarry.
