That's insane bro. I am not even sure I believe it since I have never seen this in person, only wagie stories on 4chan. If true, I would be looking for another job right now. Software jobs should be you come in when you want, you work remote when you want, and as long as you are progressing and getting work done no one should be on your ass about exact working hours.
>>
>>108678547
It's true, and while I do agree with you, this thing actually plays in my favor right now. They think I'm under control. They check the graph and my working hours are there, that's it. No one has even questioned me about it.

Ok but no one has ever questioned me either. I get good performance reviews from my manager and coworkers. We are goddamn adults not children needing constant supervision, what matters is that shit gets done. As a company we're always ahead of schedule and usually the first one done on any job with multiple contractors too.

I'm woefully underqualified (3 YOE in big tech + Masters) and am now being tasked with making architectural decisions for a startup.
What do I read/study/etc. to learn this stuff?

I got a base model 2022 macbook pro when I first joined the company. I have never used it and have just been using my laptop with Linux since then. My boss just told that if I want, I can send him back the macbook and pick out a laptop to be my dedicated work laptop and he'll ship it to my house. What laptop would you pick? I'm leaning toward something smaller, like 14". Maybe a lenovo yoga slim or something similar. Thinking of an ARM CPU this time

Anon i hope you're writing these daily activities / findings down on your personal notes too so you can actually track down your days instead of just ranting here.
After 30 days of journaling consider getting a therapy, or not, or talk someone about the information you have collected so far.
>>
>>108679666
>and spend the day coding and drawing and exercising
This is actually what I did for a bit over a year when I got fired from my previous (non tech job).
Not once I'n my life I had displayed such hard work, discipline and dedication, and honestly I doubt it will ever happen again.
At least I got the job, but I'm convinced they only reason I did it was because I seriously hated my old job and it actually made me want to off myself. I may complain about my current job now and then but this is heaven compared to that fucking shit I had before.
>>
>>
>>108679686
I have set up alarms since i entered uni back in 2019 i just never bothered to stick with it.
>>108679724
What was your daily routine looks like before you get your current job?
>>
>>108679744
>7:00 wake up
>have coffee and a toast
>read for a bit or go for a walk
>8:00 start studying
>25 min pomodoros with a couple of min break, can't remember. No 4chan or other distractions while studying
>break around 12:00 to eat something
>keep studying following the pomodoro schedule until 14:00
>take a break and have lunch
>15:00 resume studying, same schedule until I clocked 8h of study
>free time
>19:00 work out, 3 times a week I did lifting for around 90 min, 2 times I went for a 30 min run
>21:00 dinner
>After dinner I would either play video games, watch a tv show or go out for a beer
Again, this was pushed to urgency and hate, both towards my previous job and myself for being a fuck up
>>
>>108679807
Huh i thought you picked up drawing.
Thanks anon I'll try your schedule
My sleep schedule is honestly bad holy shit i would lay down on the bed during the day doing particularly nothing. Sleep for 2 hours, then woke up and cant sleep again. At night i just cant even get full on 6-7 hours. I would try sleeping at 22.00 then at 00:30 or 1:30 i would wake up and just do nothing but scroll up until morning. 6.30 i take my younger sibling to school and then go back to eat breakfast/shower, then go back to laying down.

What does it mean when people say you need to learn AI to not get left behind in the workforce? Isn't it just prompting? To be good at prompting you need domain knowledge, so just focus on that, no? Feels like a meme desu
>>
>>108679971
>Isn't it just prompting?
Yes, but it takes some practice to get that right. Especially if you're incorporating AI into a product and thus want to save on API usage or maybe even use a less powerful model. I've been working on a side project to get a local LLM to write porn stories for me and it's taken about 3 weeks of tweaking the prompts and tools over and over to get something halfway decent for the underpowered model I'm running.

After lunch I did either leetcode or going throuh stuff I studied on the previous days.
I only started applying when I had been studying for a year.
When I started applying I got rejected a lot and I invested some time reading articles about tweaking your linkedin provile and resume and they actually paid off. I had to understand that my first barrier was hr, and those people know jack shit about programming, you have to play by their rules. Nice pic, flashy profile, portfolio... all that useless bullshit. Once I did that shit I started getting calls.
>>108679901
Working out and reading after dinner could set you in the right track.
Also I can't stress the no distractions while studying hard enough. You tell yourself "well I'm gonna check /g/ just for a couple of minutes" and those 8h of study turn into 1-2 at best, poorly done.
>>
>>108678756
What kind of things are you being tasked with designing? What scale does it operate at? What makes sense to look at for inspiration/prior art examples needs to take that into account. I have 10yoe and am now the CTO of a very small startup that is beginning to take on demo customers and I still feel like I'm fumbling around sometimes so that never goes away. The only generic advice I can offer is to err on the side of chosing dumber/simpler things until it becomes obvious the situation warrants complexity. You need to be conscious of what your decisions will inflict on the people who will maintain the code

I graduated 1.5 years ago with a CS bachelor's from a half-decent state school. I've been searching for jobs in the SF Bay Area with no luck. I have 10 years of hobbyist programming experience, 1.5 years of part-time internship experience, and a resume that my friends say is "stacked." I actually enjoy programming. For many jobs where I should be getting interviews, I don't get the interviews. I get some interviews but ultimately always fall short; the farthest I've reached is a final stage in-person interview. I fear that I am screwed. How screwed am I? I've been filtered out of all the "New Grad" roles.

yep, basically adult daycare. Just bring good vibes to the daily calls and create your 2 reports per week or whatever
>you're dealing with jeets, diversity hires or other subhmans

I am a young, naive, eccentric soul!!! I'm full of hope and optimism, uncorrupted by the world around!! I want to live in the big city, drink the dubai matcha lattes, work at fagman, and build the software of the future!!!
I want to architect consumer software on the cloud, deliver products for millions of people, rewrite boomerslop in rust!!!
I DO NOT want to spend the rest of my life maintaining boomerware in C and creating tallying systems to count how many ball bearings are being produced by the mexican slaves... I am not the golden goose for a bunch of stupid boomers!
I don't give a shit how much it pays. Fuck you!

So I somehow got a CS job, after being in the hiring process for a fucking YEAR.
Problem is, I barely remember any of the shit I learned in college. Best I can do is write some basic c++ and python programs, like assignment tier.
Now I'm going into a job that's paying like 80k. WTF do I study to be ready for this shit? I start in 3 weeks.

How long does it take for you to land an offer after that 12 months of studying? I assume your daily routine must have shifted / tweaked when it's time to go jobhunting?
I genuinely need help from you, some guidance at least before the year ends and i get nothing again. Can i add you on discord?

I'm realizing over time that a lot of the obsession with AI stuff in the software dev world is people desperate for tech to "move forward" and to be a part of that move.
Especially among the leetcode loving go-getters and workaholics I think there has been kind of a looming dread over the fact that most of the work thats needed is just designing things that have been made before or maintaining services that move information from one place to another.
To them being the one developing AI is a way to move past that "unskilled" and "non-innovative" work. They're arent the ones maintaining old code anymore, theyre writing the AI that will do it instead!
The usefulness of whats being made is secondary to the fact that it is *something new* being made.

linkedin is so much easier to fill when you're working in creative industry like gamedev or animation. people post their WIPs there and they're just so eye catching. i found it harder to make it interesting there now that i have no other choice to commit to webdev again.

i feel that in working i have become a worse and less productive person
in my last job i was in the military and over time went from a simple mercenary to someone who had some passion back down to someone who has mere interests but still fixes shit as required. I got another job and there is stuff to fix as required but I feel a lot less passion, the systems to work on let alone fix are vastly worse if not outright malicious, but in general I just don't fucking care and what few times I care I am brought back to earth by myself

I maintain that a scary part of the job is that I may have been hired for being a lunatic. Nothing about this is particularly hard, and I don't get paid particularly well for it. But I am here, at least when I'm not too hungover or otherwise in crisis, and I do it, at least when there hasn't been an actual personal-level mechanical crisis making me only five minutes late instead of taking the day off for little things like emotions and insanity.

People need a little shove now and again.
I mean it. The situation isn't fatal, my position isn't in question, it makes it very hard to maintain motivation when it's to support a system that doesn't work as designed, for people who don't care, for companies that have abandoned the projects, even if the craft it's all for is a little sexy. Even in my other job, all my experience is on a class of ship that may as well not exist anymore, that did missions that never mattered, for people who don't care, in support of operations no one cares about. I know at some point there was some genuine passion and caring. That has been lost somewhere.

There's an old saying that being a surgeon is a lot like being a mechanic, but the engine is still running (and isn't allowed to stop)
In IT support, it's like being a mechanic but the owner is in surgery and still awake.
Thought honestly, there's a lot of
>X is down!
>We can do our best, but the event might have to be put on pause. At fastest, known solution is to shut it down entirely and come back up, or you can wait for us to diagnose and treat.
>NOPE. It's over, then. We can't wait!!!
Even when I was even newer and given the reins after an event was called off, there was a lot of "Good try, I'd have done the same, but there isn't time for that."
And early on for longer-term issues and fixes I said "That's the kind of thing I'd do at home, but..." a lot and eventually got the equivalent of "So fucking do it." And that's how I got someone to buy me a whopping 15ml of thermal paste, but also an entire rack of unused servers. Guess it's the same as you have patients with acute issues, but also a lot of cadavers to train on

there's a similar thing among the infantry, or so i hear
as your career goes on, either you carry vastly more stuff, or eschew it all. either you get shot at once and realize that you need to protect yourself and everyone around you so you need all the armour, all the tools, all the first aid gear, all the everything to cover every situation wandering the desert heavily laden than the average sinner meeting anubis, or you do the opposite; you get shot at once and realize that life is fleeting, anyone can get it, and shed gear like a bird molting and eventually wander the desert light as a feather in a desperate attempt to weigh less than your conscience

Or sniped with a meme round like .300 BLK. If you're gonna kill me, at least take some pride in it and use something either proper or memey. Oh to be killed by .338~

it took me a long time to get it and i wont pretend like theres any instant magic bullet. im pretty sure i was only interviewed at all because im "ex-"miitary and only kept my job despite poor performance because my bosses are desperate lunatics and honestly my own military experience is so paltry and lame that i dont think it's respected at all. i'm a minesweeper babby among helicoper pilots and surface action officers and shit, to say nothing of the infantry battalion on his own that is my own boss.
but all that said
>invalid
I am a weak person but also THEY make fun of me for constantly doing maintenance on my vehicle, dressing like I'm crossing the desert or tundra, carrying either piles of tools or nothing at all,
I'm wholly unprepared for anything, but most people are way worse. if there is anything to be depressed about, yeah, I can get interviews and even eventually a job, despite how horrendous and incompetent a person I am. I am wildly incompetent, underequipped, inexperienced, and generally unprepared to help you. the average person is worse.

>How long does it take for you to land an offer after that 12 months of studying?
I spent a bit over a month applying for jobs. I got filtered hard because I didn't have a CS degree or experience in the field. At first I only applied to very low level junior positions where I knew all the technologies required, then I went for a machine gun strategy and started applied to every offer that was web dev related, not only on linkedin but 3-4 websites.
I don't use discord anon and you really don't need more guidance from me than I have already provided. I've been in your shoes, browsing these threads, making similar posts. There are no magic words I can say to you. You need discipline and hard work, it's that simple, and that hard.

Yes, I'm still doing web dev.

ive been doing this too for over the last 10 months but for QA job and shit nothing lands
you only took like 1-2 month to get a job. that's just really good.
what does your CV looks like when you finally got a job that sticks? did you have like 2 solid projects? if i go back to learn webdev again it's gonna be like going through the kiddie tier stuff like to-do-list and kanban boards again.

Like i mean whats your syllabus? Whats your resources? Udemy?
>>
>>108685325
I only did a couple of course projects, I also had some Udemy and Leetcode certificates on my resume and linkedin profile.
I found Udemy to be a good resource when you are starting out, but courses rarely go beyond beginner levels and when you actually know how to code are mostly a waste of money.
For webdev I focused on frontend. MDN, javascript.info and CSSTricks were way better resources than any course I paid for or pirated.
I'm not sure if AI is making landing a job easier or harder. Back when I did it people were already pretty bad as juniors. They would jump straight to bootcamps, land a job and you find people that couldn't do basic logic and their whole experience was doing basic React apps. I can only assume AI usage has made this worse, but then again you'll have to fight through the hr barrier and they are simply retarded.
