Do browsers still work with win7? I don't need much except for reading 4chan, some forums, blogs and watching yt.

yes, you're in luck. I'm posting from firefox ESR 115. It works on nearly every site.
Here are some browsers I use/you could try
>Pale Moon
IMO, the best for /g/ autists but doesn't work so well on many modern (aka pozzed) sites.
>Firefox ESR
mozilla, pozzed, etc etc. but it works pretty fine
>r3dfox
fork of firefox made for win7. Works great.
>Chromium 109
last version to work on win 7
>Supermium
chromium fork for win7. Pretty much always works if any site is giving you trouble on any other browser
probably a few more I'm missing but try any of those.
Also, at this point, you can run most if not all new browsers on win7 using Second System but you do have to "donate" $5 a month to the guy to get access to the software. I personally think it's worth it but you don't need it for your use case anyway since all the browsers above will work for you

>I still can't get used to win 10.
yep, me neither. I tried it once and hated it so much I put 7 on my laptop and I've been using it to this day. I tried many experiments in VMs to see if I could get 10 into a condition I found acceptable. At the time I thought I'd for sure have to move over, but now that all these compatibility layers exist for 7 I'm pretty much back up to date in terms of software support again.
If you're really serious about staying on 7 I still do very much recommend Second System. I know I come across like a shill or maybe even the guy who makes the software himself when I mention it on this board but it's let me keep using 7 which is far more valuable to me than the few bucks I spent on donating. But I do understand not wanting to pay for any software. VxKex works for a few programs as well but not nearly as good as second system does.

Fuck no. The problem with this is that it's fundamentally running windows 10 under the hood. The wallpaper color is irrelevant, the reason I keep using 7 is because it DOESN'T run like utter dog dick that 10 is.
>>
>>108990376
honestly, I don't even remember what forum I heard about it on. The same guy who maintains Supermium started making a compatibility layer sort of thing called Second System. I think I looked into it when VxKex wasn't really working with most of the applications I wanted to run.
You install it, and then (for the most part) newer Windows software will just work. The catch is, you need to pay $5 a month to get access to the software. Or you could pay $5 just once and get access to the page and download everything and cancel your subscription, which is done through patreon, which I've never used prior to this.
There have been a few issues but the guy is responsive and shit gets fixed pretty fast. look up 'second system' 'patreon' 'legacy software corporation'

If all you need is a browser why the fuck are you using Windows? Install Linux Mint with XFCE if you're tech illiterate and need a lightweight but easy to use machine for browsing the web. Otherwise buy a $100 Chromebook.
>>
>>
>>108990427
Because Windows's code is a total mess of decades of legacy cruft piled on top of each other for the sake of backwards compatibility, a fact that anyone who has ever had to develop Win32 apps is painfully familiar with. Not to mention that when people say the "liked XP", what they really mean is the interface and its responsiveness, not the underlying system architecture, which was always complete garbage.

There's nothing wrong with somebody using a computer as a browser. It's a tool. They can be used for different jobs and not everyone is a turbo autist like us. Relax. I was just saying he doesn't specifically need Windows for using a browser, anything works, so use something lightweight and up to date instead.

Windows 7 is ultimately doomed by the lack of new hardware, due to driver signings being no longer performed, you have to run Windows 7 in a special boot mode to run newer hardware. And aero isn't available on new GPUs. Even if you extend the kernel you eventually can't beat anti cheat and drm stopping popular software from running.
Windows 7 is like a town on an eroding cliff, yes you might get lucky for a few years but eventually your house will fall.
Windows 98 has already fallen, XP is barley hanging on and 7 will probably be lost when Windows 10 LTSC loses a lot of the "scaffolding" keeping extended kernels viable.

This, Windows 7 officially only supports as new as Skylake computers, and they're over 10 years old now, still pretty powerful, but there is no path forward for Windows 7 when it comes to hardware, I virtualize Windows 7 all the time to run my Sony Vegas and Photoshop, but at least with Linux, I can get a brand new computer and keep using my same shit and get all the support and newer technologies that come out, but by sticking with Windows 7, you're kinda screwed because you think you're running this based speedy OS, but you're stuck on older, less efficient hardware and not getting any mainstream software support, so you end up just being a worse off Linux user.

That's on the Intel side. AMD officially supported Windows 7 through all of AM4, and several AM5 motherboards work thanks to modified versions of those drivers. You'll be able to run the latest Ryzen CPUs on Windows 7 for a few more years. GPUs are the real bottleneck that cap out on official drivers from 2022 from AMD and 2023 from Nvidia, but the 3090ti is still more than enough power.
Plus IIRC, the second system guy is working on "something" for extended GPU support.

That would be nice if you could actually maintain and do your own thing, but it's a closed source system, fucking around with windows 7 is like being a Linux user but without even the benefits of being a Linux user stuff will continue to break and you have no way of fixing it, using a compatibility layer to run stuff that only wants to run isn't maintaining anything, the Windows API will continue to change when Microsoft wants it to and things will just continue to break over time.
Windows 7 is best left for a virtual machine, I loved the time I had with it, I love the software that I used on it, but I know that I'm not gonna be able to use it as the main system forever.

I'm just sad that beyond my selfish ability to keep windows 7 going during my life, that most other people in the world are never going to be able to experience or have a good, functional operating system again. Enshittification is so strong that they are all growing up on windows 10 thinking it's normal for computers to run as badly as windows 10 runs. They will never know how much better they could have it.

Ahh you'd love Mint XFCE Anon, whole OS uses like 650mb of RAM on Mint XFCE, I used to think Windows 7 was the lightest motherfucker back in the day, but it's actually massively bloated compared to just how minimal some of these Linux desktop environments are, and you can have it on an up to date kernel which means it you're fast as fuck on a newer computer.

the biggest issue is forced obsolescense through 3rd party attacks like incompatible web standards, programming libraries and unsupported dependencies, they actively break compatibility and force people to shift to the new stuff because otherwise they'd just stop updating and keep relying on the old functionality. they are actively implementing things that break compatibility with old systems or software nowadays, especially after they publicly denounced the win7, rather than just neglect the old and unmaintained versions like they used to or maintain them and improve compatibility like what used to be a normal thing.
internet and gaming has become a lot more hostile and controlled since its centralization around several megacorporations, and you can hardly find anything outside of their ecosystem because the search engines disregard old text based websites, blogposts and forums and flood everything with ai or mass produced articles and reddit instead.

>You don't have to use Windows 7 if you don't want to.
I use it all the time to preserve software I loved, I don't waste my time with hacks trying to make it work, when people are using community made bullshit hacks to attempt to make things work, it stops being the just werks OS we loved, it turns like I said into a hackintosh or some bizzare Linux distribution that you have to fuck with to make it work.

And this is your problem how, exactly? Why does that upset you? You're being weird, anon.
>>
>>
>>108997986
It's not upsetting, it just boggles a little, cause these were the same people back when 7 was supported talking about how nothing works on Linux, all they do is hack shit, and now here they are basically doing hacks to make the OS even work on hardware that doesn't support it, and using compatibility layers similar to WINE to make stuff work that otherwise wouldn't work on 7 via API extensions from 10
Basically Windows 7 guys are almost lijke Arch Linux guys, but proprietary.

Good luck anon, I and I hope it can be used as long as possible, but I don't know I honestly thought 7 could be used forever, I think it had way over 30% markets hare when support dropped, and chrome did continue until 2023 and they still dropped it in spite of more people using 7 than all Linux desktop users, thays why the future is this big question mark when it comes to using 7.

I still use Windows 7 and have been building a new PC with components far past the """supported""" range in the past month or so as I procure components in this shit economy. I have not once disparaged Linux or its users and commend their effort in making work what they enjoy. Get the fuck out of here with that shitposter and falseflagging shit, faggot. You perpetuating tribalism and/or troll narratives does not help anyone including Linux users.

Shit, they were kinda nostalgic for me when they came out, intel had ditched the northbridge with sandy bridge, which meant bus speed OC was dead, FX was based cause you could do a simple multiplier OC which was really all you needed, or you could stay at stock multiplier and crank the bus mhz at a time until it stopped being prime stable, or whatever you were going for, and it had supported Windows XP, Vista, based 7 onward? What a dream platform.

Just got home and dug around my FX folder from the good old days, pic rel was my 24/7 because if you did 4.5 the TDP of the CPU went way up and became almost 70c on a hot day, but 4.4GHz with the RAM running at 1760MHz with a 7970 at 1GHz is probably my favorite rig of all time, my i7 8700 is 65w and fast, but it's just no fun.

Yes, here is her Cinebench R15 when cranked to 4.5GHz stable, I only gained 15 points over 4.4GHz and it put out more heat, but a 715 cinebench score back in 2014 when I made that rig was fantastic.

>>109000862
This is what the rig looked like before it was retied, it wasn't perfect but I thought it was the coolest fuckin thing ever when I put it together at 19, now I like more power efficient stuff, but back then I didn't care that the CPU used 125w, or the card was a 250w TDP, I just cranked up the power limit +20, crank up the CPU voltage and sent it.
>>

megacorps aren't people and it wasn't about support but about making new stuff incompatible with the old versions intentionally. they go out of their way to replace existing standards and tools just to corner and push people to buy the new stuff they wouldn't need or want otherwise.
>>
>>
>>
>>109001222
The whole rig was ghetto but it was amazing, if you pulled off the other side of the case, the rig would spill it's spaghetti because the entire non modular PSU was stuffed back there, but I had never done a computer build before, so I thought it was the coolest fuckin thing ever
>>
>>108988796
Yes, you options are Supermium, r3dfox, custom Firefox builds (official ESR 115 works for now too), Pale Moon and SeaMonkey.
In fact even on Windows XP you can still use Supermium natively and access modern internet without any significant compromises.

umatrix makes noscript redundant but i'd also recommend ublacklist to filter al dump websites in search to make it more usable, plus a cookie manager of your choice. i personally use the discontinued vanilla cookie manager because it reliably and cleanly works for whitelisting/cleaning cookies without unnecessary stuff like editing them or other webdev shit.

is there a de that can remember window size/position after closing/maximizing the window/rebooting the system on a per program basis? having all windows always be the same size popping up in the middle of the screen really ticked me off when i was using linux,
>>
>>109001899
I don't know, but on the Cinnamon environment I have, stuff pops up in the left corner like file manager windows that memorize their size, but will pop up on the left corner or maximized if you had it maximized last time, the terminal will always pop up near the left corner and defaults to a certain size unmaximized, but web browsers seem to perfectly memorize their size and position even when rebooted, so it depends on the program.

>picking up a used 1660 Super for cheap upgrade
I would totally do it, I love this 750Ti for how efficient Maxwell was at the time, but i'm probably gonna get a used 1050Ti for this rig because it can't even run my 4K TV at 60Hz, so I just end up running it at 1080p, but it's not a bad little occasional use TV computer.
>>
>>109001951
that's what i figured, i found that some programs do this on their own but DEs don't do this natively. i like to organize my notes in notepad txt files and structure them around a certain window size so it all fits neatly into rows, columns and doesn't need scrolling almost like a freeform table. similar thing when i use an office program with a web browser, i can just open it and have it hand on a half of the screen from the previous session or minimize the window and have it pop there automatically.
how is the cinnamon's file manager? i heard it used to have some stutter/performance issues, do you find it so or it lacking some feature you'd use?
>>
>>109002087
I like the cinnamon file manager, it's basically a gnome fork of what they use, which means it can right click and share a folder over the network, which XFCE's Thunar just can't do, if XFCE could share a folder, I'd be using it on the main rig, but when it comes to speeding up an older or low end computer, or just going fast as possible, XFCE is really incredible despite the lack of features, it's like putting Windows 7 in classic mode with all the bullshit animations turned off and then some, but on a new kernel that you can put on a new computer.
>>
>>109002176
thunar's lack of subfolder search out of the box would be more off putting for me. i got interested in the topic yesterday so i went to research what some of those programs can and cannot do and compared that to the changes from XP to Vista/7, which included a new search functionality, variable icon sizes, more sharing and sorting options, menu droptables on top instead of the big taskbars on the side cutting into useful screenspace and so on.
linux programs have potential even if they lack a number of pretty desirable features but there's an almost universal issue with them that they lack sane defaults and look badly so they need to be extensively adjusted/modified just to get to the baseline functionality you'd expect, even if they do function well afterwards. that's why mint is such an outstanding exception - they do try to make an effort to offer a sane and easy on the eyes out of the box solution instead of just adding raw elements together like they're ticking the boxes in a spreadsheet.
>>
>>109002303
>they do try to make an effort to offer a sane and easy on the eyes out of the box solution
It's true, that's why I keep telling Windows 7 bros to just try it, because it's shocking how good it is, and I was a hardcore Windows 7 motherfucker.
>>
>>109002347
i've already explained my situation itt but i was the opposite, i tried linux and after fumbling with it for years i went to windows 7 and is now pretty set on it, especially since even if my current pc does break down i'd just buy a cheap mini-pc that's still capable of supporting win7 without all the driver fuckery as a replacement and stick to using it for years to come.

>Can't play any vidya on steam now
Launch the exe from game files, steam overlay still works and so does multi
>game doesnt want to update the redistrubuables so it doesnt launch
go offline mode, click play, go online mode - takes like 3 seconds and it works with every single multi i've tested so far
>game doesnt start because of an update and it doesn't update(stuck on download)
close steam, get steamCMD (official from valve)
run "steamcmd.exe -overrideminos +login <your login>" in cmd or make a bat file to automate it a lil bit
login with your credentials
app_update <insert game steam id here>
exit
you can get steam id from right clicking the games in your library, properties, updates or just from steamdb itself
as of today on a 2,5 years old steam client the only thing that doesn't work is video preview on game page that you can just open on a browser
>>
>>
>>
>>108992043
Cope. No idea what video you're talking about. Using an outdated, well-known OS while connected to the internet is a disaster waiting to happen. Even simply using a web browser is unsafe when your OS is so outdated and not supported anymore.
>>
>>
>>108993672
>That would be nice if you could actually maintain and do your own thing, but it's a closed source system
and? having source code does not help you add functionality.
if you actually know how software works then you can extend closed source software almost as easily as open sores crap, except with the benefit that idiots like you don't put their shitty code into the system because you believe it's impossible to modify something without the sores code
>>
>>
>>109003835
You're the one that's delusional. Even if you have all the source code (and people do have the leaked XP source code), you still need to put effort into writing all the new code you want to put in. For Windows it's a lot of code to write and nobody has bothered because it's easier to just make a few DLLs to slap in here and there to patch things you don't like or add new functionality.
Open sores tards like you have this delusion that if only you had the source code for something then "the community" would magically make it better.
Guess what, all of Linux is open source and it's only gotten worse since 10 years ago. Where's the Unity desktop? Replaced with Gnomeshit. Lmao.
>>
>>109004645
>and people do have the leaked XP source code
They don't legally own it and the Microsoft will fuck anyone in the ass legally who tries to make a distro or fork of NT 5.1 kernel or any of the components because they are the owners of the source code, just like how GNU does the licensing of free software, they use law to keep things open source by letting you fork and make modifications and distros of things as long as you release the source code of what you made.
>>
>>109004681
Also the gnomeshit works, but you're not forced to use it, that's the beauty of open source stuff, we get what we want, Windows users take whatever the fuck Microsoft gives them, Vista too bloated for your 1GB ram computer? fuck you. Start menu all fucked up in Windows 8? Fuck you. Forced updates in Windows 10? Fuck you, you're taking it, just on and on and on with Microsoft, and Windows users can't do a goddamn thing about it.
>>
>>109004681
>They don't legally own it and the Microsoft will fuck anyone in the ass legally who tries to make a distro or fork of NT 5.1 kernel or any of the components
More delusional bullshit
First of all it's not true, Microsoft doesn't really give a shit and that's why you can find XP source leaks on github that are months or years old (i.e. haven't been taken down).
Second of all even if it were true that still doesn't explain why most open source software sucks compared to the proprietary competitor.
>>109004696
>1GB ram computer
you can run Windows 7 on 512MB and everything works fine. the problem you'll run into is when you try to open Chrome to browse the web. It's OPEN SOURCE isn't it, why isn't there a Chrome fork that uses less than 1GB of ram? Lmfao freetards are genuinely retarded
>>
>>
>>109004714
Chrome uses more memory than the entire Windows 7 OS even when the only thing you have open is a single blank tab. Stop coping.
Chromium is open source but you can't actually modify it because it will quickly become out of date and Cuckflare will start cockblocking all of your users

And how do you exacly prove that anon's point about chrome eating more? There are mad lads that could boot up 7 with less ram in the entire pc than your one empty tab eats.
Sure, it requires some witchcraft and we could argue for the entire day about how useful it is but still, your favourite browser is cucked and bloated.
>>
>>109004994
>Sure, it requires some witchcraft and we could argue for the entire day about how useful it is
So it doesn't if you're talking about a practical W7 install
I don't get it. It's like you're arguing, but you're also proving him right
