Specifically it's ordered checkerboard dithering. There are lots of cool patterns out there to increase the total color depth in unique ways. As far as details go blue noise is usually the best for details. Depending on the hardware your working with the pattern can change. As an example on older 8 bit CPU's checkered dithering creates a harsh rainbow effect, so it's usually avoided.
