Slavery in Rome was unique, because skilled, artisan class slaves and the like were routinely manumitted their freedom and there were established legal protections for such slaves and even a path to citizenship for them. A good chunk of Rome's citizenry were actually freedmen, and there was even an entire holiday in Rome honoring them.

But yeah, they also had chattel slaves who toiled in the mines, in the fields, rowing ships, etc and they had basically no hope of manumission. As long as you had an actual trade, though, you stood actually a better chance of earning Roman citizenship than free people in conquered provinces.

They basically segregated them by social class. Laborers were property, but skilled artisans, musicians, tradesmen, anyone literate or numerate, would be given a kind of provisional citizenship.

The Roman Republic and early attempts at empire were good. Colonialism was good. Bringing black people outside of Africa was very bad.
